Elf director Jon Favreau's action-packed adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg's children's book is great family entertainment. In this intergalactic Jumanji, brothers Jonah Bobo and Josh Hutcherson are taught life lessons when they play a dusty board game found in the cellar that thrusts them into outer space to face meteor showers, a defective robot and lizard-like aliens. The witty script generates laughs from the cryonic freezing of the boys' sister, but there are touching moments too, like the revelation of can-do astronaut Dax Shepard's true identity. Having the entire universe just outside their front door creates huge imaginative scope, while the terrific retro Dan Dare-style design matches the film's refreshing reliance on old-school special effects. Favreau brings a delightful sense of childlike wonder to this stellar comic-book fantasy adventure that offers fun - and scares - for all age groups.

Morecambe and Wise found the transition from TV celebrities to film stars a difficult one to make. They were not helped by the fact that, for their big-screen debut, Sid Green and Dick Hills (scriptwriters of their ITV series at the time) failed to marry the familiar Eric and Ernie characteristics that kept audiences in stitches week after week with the demands of what is, in all honesty, a fitfully entertaining spy spoof. When they do manage to rise above the material, they are very funny indeed, and nearly two hours in their company could never be considered time wasted.

Three Men and a Little Lady- (1990)
14:00 - 16:00 - Channel 5
5.3/10 Stars

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

In this decidedly lacklustre comedy sequel to Three Men and a Baby, Tom Selleck, Steve Guttenberg and Ted Danson travel to London to try to prevent their adopted daughter from being sent to - horrors! - boarding school. As an insult to Britain it would have been more effective if it had been better made, but it wasn't. In addition, casting British actors to perform as if they are the befuddled eccentrics of an imaginary England of the 1950s seems almost contemptuous. Count it as another example of Hollywood's quaint and unrealistic view of the British way of life.

Stranger than Fiction writer Zach Helm makes his directorial debut with this family-friendly tale of an enchanted toy store. Dustin Hoffman hams it up as the eponymous 243-year-old proprietor, whose time on Earth is running out. He plans to pass the baton to his young assistant (a cutesy turn by Natalie Portman), but she has her heart set on becoming a composer. As you'd expect, the setting allows Helm to conjure up a colourful array of bells and whistles, but the paper-thin yarn fails to draw you in. Helm provides no context for the existence of the toy shop where supernatural shenanigans are an everyday occurrence, and he loses a vital sense of wonder when he veers from the point of view of the story's young narrator Eric (Zach Mills). Sadly, there's just not enough magic here to make it memorable.

This distinguished British war film details the exploits of celebrated Royal Navy frogman Lieutenant Lionel "Buster" Crabb (no, not the movie star). He's played here by Laurence Harvey, whose explosive temperament is a perfect match for Crabb's volatile character. The underwater shooting (by Egil Woxholt) is well done and the plot has more excitement than many fictional tales. Reliable Michael Craig plays Crabb's partner, while stern John Clements represents the Admiralty. The saga is shot through with a rich vein of humour, a credit to the creative talent of writer/director William Fairchild. Lovely Dawn Addams is the female lead, but in British films of this period the ladies didn't get much of a look in.

Sandra Bullock's star charisma raises this mediocre computer-age paranoia fantasy to the level of watchable entertainment. The Speed heroine plays a lonely hacker who uncovers a criminal conspiracy, but how she copes with the threat of cyberspace annihilation from an unknown assassin turns an already slow-moving thriller into a predictable game of hide-and-seek that relies on major lapses in logic and coincidence for a happy ending. The neat electronic visuals can't hide the contrived and confusing direction by Irwin Winkler.

Imagine a mix of Sky High and The Incredibles with all the fun, laughs and clever adventure taken out and you've got director Peter Hewitt's atrocious comic-book fiasco. Washed-up superhero Tim Allen is coerced into half-heartedly training Team Phoenix - four "gifted" youngsters - for battle. What the former Captain Zoom doesn't know is the villain about to re-visit Earth is his long-lost brother turned evil by experimental government gamma rays. All of this is mirthless to a mind-numbing degree with the focus on juvenile fart, snot and burp gags. The acting is also terrible - Allen goes through the motions, love interest Courteney Cox pratfalls for nonexistent giggles and wacky professor Chevy Chase is simply embarrassing. Even the poor special effects-driven action is lame - the best bit being Team Phoenix attempting to control a malfunctioning flying saucer. It ends, as most failed comedies do, with an out-take reel over the credits. And that's not funny either!

Goldie Hawn is at her dippiest as waitress Gwen, who overturns the life of Steve Martin's staid architect Newton Davis in this likeable if somewhat silly romantic comedy. Davis is recovering from rejection by the love of his life (Dana Delany) when he meets Gwen, who decides to help his convalescence by moving into the dream house he has built but left empty after getting the elbow from his dream woman. When Gwen tells the neighbourhood that she's his new wife, the comic complications pile on, to generally amusing effect. Mark Stein's screenplay has all the elements that you would expect of a classic screwball comedy. It's the old loathers becoming lovers scenario - imagine Cary Grant being jilted by Carole Landis only to be swept off his feet by a madcap Katharine Hepburn and you get the basic idea. What makes this such a cosy watch is that we've seen Martin and Hawn play these kind of characters before. As he proved in Planes, Trains and Automobiles, Martin is a master when it comes to put-upon types whose initial frosty frustration gradually thaws into fond acceptance, while Hawn has been playing dizzy kooks since the heyday of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. Spouting increasingly fabulous fibs is one thing, but playing stooge is quite another and director Frank Oz is fortunate in having Julie Harris and Donald Moffat backing up the leads as Martin's uncomprehending but trusting parents. It's flawed but fun.

Given that plot is never a key element of Jackie Chan's oeuvre, it's no surprise that only two elements really matter: the chemistry between the two inevitable buddies/partners and the quality of the action. Sadly, both are well below par in this Dublin-set farrago. Chan stars as cop Eddie Yang, whose search for evil crime lord Snakehead (Julian Sands) leads to the discovery of an ancient medallion and a kidnapped boy, who does little but sit unnaturally still and look inscrutable. Inexplicably semi-dubbed and looking like it was edited on a bacon slicer, this barely releasable mess couldn't possibly get any worse until Lee Evans deftly applies the tin lid with an excruciatingly irritating performance. Even Chan's undoubted screen charm can't rescue this inept mess.

Adapted from Anne Fine's book Alias Madame Doubtfire, this knowing blend of comedy and common sense is family entertainment par excellence. Aided by Oscar-winning make-up, Robin Williams gives one of the performances of his career as an actor who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny to be close to his children after he splits from wife Sally Field. Director Chris Columbus should be given credit for reining in the Williams exuberance that often overbalances his pictures, while retaining enough of his quick-fire personality to ensure that just about every gag hits its target. Raising the occasional quizzical eyebrow in bewilderment, Pierce Brosnan also does well as the bachelor looking for a ready-made family, but Field overdoes the exasperation and the film's a lot more fun when she's not around. It's a little long and some scenes misfire, notably Williams's routine with the dinosaurs and the resultant TV show, but cracking set pieces, such as the make-up experiments and the series of table-hopping quick changes, more than make amends. No matter how many times you've seen it already, it's worth watching again just for Mara Wilson, playing one of the daughters, who was even more impressive in Danny DeVito's adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda.

This 1999 TV-movie take on Washington Irving's classic ghost story might be considered one of the most faithful adaptations, but it's also among the driest. Made the same year as Tim Burton's lavishly atmospheric version, the plodding period feature is dull and insubstantial in comparison. Brent Carver hams it up as New England schoolteacher Ichabod Crane whose rivalry for the affections of local girl Katrina Van Tassel leads him on the trail of the legendary Headless Horseman. Unfortunately, his bumbling eccentricity only exaggerates the film's overall tweeness, with stilted support and basic direction compounding the limp affair.

What happens to a Playboy bunny when she's over the hill is the focus of this sweet, daffy comedy. Anna Faris sparkles as hapless man-pleaser Shelley Darlington, who's ejected from the Playboy Mansion when she hits the ripe old age of 27. Shelley finds an outlet for her limited talents when she helps to transform the fortunes of a geeky girls sorority that's threatened with closure, and finds something new in herself in the process. Faris is clearly a talented and attractive actress, but she's let down here by an average script and director Fred Wolf's inability to nail the concept's true comedy potential. That said, there's nice support from Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Rumer Willis (herself the daughter of Demi Moore and Bruce Willis), as well as some great set and wardrobe design. Watch with low expectations and this will be pleasantly surprising.

Delivering exactly what the title promises, and in highly amusing fashion, director Phil Claydon does for Hammer horror nostalgia what Shaun of the Dead did for zombies with this visually resplendent homage. The simple plot sees sex-crazed, drunken slacker James Corden and jilted loser Mathew Horne hiking through a creepy village cursed with Sapphic bloodsuckers. Also along for the ride are MyAnna Buring (The Descent, Doomsday) as a feisty Swedish student and Paul McGann as a foul-mouthed vicar. The humour is more deadpan than Corden and Horne's wickedly funny TV series Gavin & Stacey. But for all its obvious vulgarity, this is also a cleverly aware spoof of lurid 1970s Hammer glamour; an edgy girls, gags and gunk extravaganza that has all the hallmarks of a post-modern Carry On Screaming.

From its masterly eight-minute opening crane shot to the final blockbuster pastiche, this swingeing satire is easily the best movie about Tinseltown since Sunset Blvd. With relish, director Robert Altman turns the spotlight on the industry hands that feed him and scores a bullseye on each target in Michael Tolkin's deft script. The temptation is to play spot the star, but don't let the galaxy of cameos from such celebrities as Bruce Willis, Julia Roberts and Cher distract from the gloriously cynical plot and a towering turn from a marvellously oily Tim Robbins. He merited at least an Oscar nomination for his performance as Griffin Mill, the high-flying studio executive who is troubled by poison-pen postcards from a discarded scriptwriter, the ambitions of wunderkind Peter Gallagher and the snooping of cop Whoopi Goldberg, who suspects him of murder. This is Hollywood at its worst told by Hollywood at its best.

This absolutely wonderful comedy thriller from Stanley Donen (co-director, with Gene Kelly, of On the Town and Singin' in the Rain) nearly out-Hitchcocks Hitchcock. With a MacGuffin so clever you'll never guess, and a dream pairing of Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn on ravishing Parisian locations, what more could you possibly want in the way of movie entertainment? There's a clever plot (by Peter Stone) that never lets up, a marvellous romantic score (by Henry Mancini), star-making turns from Walter Matthau and James Coburn, and some magnificent set pieces: Grant taking a shower fully-clothed; Hepburn and Grant falling in love on a Paris river boat; and a one-handed villain in a roof-top cliffhanger. This terrific movie's got the lot. Jonathan Demme directed a disastrous remake in 2002, with Mark Wahlberg and Thandie Newton in the lead roles.
