This trifle has hints of The African Queen, with Peter O'Toole as a manic Irish seaman who teams up with a Quaker missionary (O'Toole's then wife, Sian Phillips) and a French oil engineer (convincingly played by Philippe Noiret) to sink a German U-boat on the Orinoco delta. Shot in the jungles of Venezuela, the film's blend of whimsy and battle is skilfully handled by director Peter Yates, who was riding high at the time on the success of Bullitt.

Big John Wayne finally won peer group recognition, taking the best actor Oscar for his performance in this western as Reuben J "Rooster" Cogburn, a cantankerous, one-eyed, drunken old reprobate hired by Mattie Ross (the excellent Kim Darby) to avenge her father's death at the hands of thoroughly nasty Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey). This movie has acquired a reputation for being a rollicking fun western, but actually it is surprisingly violent for a Wayne film (a pit of rattlesnakes, Dennis Hopper's fingers being severed), and, with its finely hewn, semi-Biblical dialogue (by Marguerite Roberts from Charles Portis's marvellous novel), it's not - unlike Wayne's earlier westerns - really suitable for family viewing, despite its strong moral theme. Glen Campbell is ineffective as Texas Ranger La Boeuf - a role first offered to Elvis Presley, to whom Wayne wouldn't take second billing - but it doesn't really matter. It's still a beautifully photographed film of many memorable moments, not least of which is Cogburn's final shoot-out with the bad guys in a Colorado clearing.

One of the most beautiful and distinguished achievements of early colour, this fine movie tends to be overlooked among the other highlights of Hollywood's annus mirabilis - in 1939, every studio seemed to be unveiling a movie classic a fortnight. This is effectively a pre-western, dealing with tribal raids among the early settlers during the American War of Independence. It also contains a rather disturbing anti-British bias, not for the first time from ace director John Ford, who was himself of Irish stock. Taken as a romantic action adventure, though, it rattles along. Claudette Colbert seems just a little too well groomed for the frontier, but Henry Fonda, as ever, is perfectly at home and a constant pleasure to watch.

Revamping teen-witch movie The Craft for boys, this brash and empty horror film lacks magic. At an elite public school in the Massachusetts town of Ipswich, four teenagers (led by Sky High's Steven Strait) struggle to cope with supernatural powers handed down through their families since the days of the Salem witch-hunts. This plays like something brainstormed in a marketing meeting, with director Renny Harlin (Exorcist: the Beginning) desperately trying to appeal to the core demographic with a thrash-metal soundtrack, petulant teen angst, and some subversive humour ("Harry Potter can kiss my ass!"). He fails miserably, though, and most teenagers will probably be embarrassed on the film's behalf.

In a welcome return to the gritty glamour of such early outings as From Russia with Love, this 19th James Bond adventure effortlessly juggles a hard-hitting story with all the expected "super spy" embellishments and keeps everything in diamond-cut focus for maximum suspense and thrills. Plaudits should go to director Michael Apted for the stirring, not shaky, blend of casino, ski slopes and submarine components contained within a topical plot about the power struggle for global domination of pipelines from oil-rich Azerbaijan. Pierce Brosnan is clearly comfortable as 007, both in the dramatic sequences and during the spectacular stunts. (The opening speedboat chase along the River Thames gets things moving in turbo drive.) Matching him every step of the way are Sophie Marceau, the best Bond girl in ages, and Robert Carlyle, who is perfect as a vicious villain. Even Judi Dench's "M" gets out into the Middle East battlefield to show her gadget ingenuity. Though everything comes gift-wrapped in production glitz, there are many touching moments to temper the adrenaline-pumping action. Accompanied by a theme song from Garbage that sounds like Shirley Bassey revisited, the world's greatest secret agent entered the new millennium in fine blockbuster form.

Infamous British stand-up Russell Brand reprises his role from hit comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall here, only this time he's hogging the limelight as impish rock star Aldous Snow. Jonah Hill (who also appeared in that film) is typically hangdog as the record-company drone charged with getting Aldous to the Greek Theatre in LA for his big comeback gig. It's hardly an original premise from writer/director Nicolas Stoller (Yes Man), but he does set the stage for some brilliantly funny turns, and not only from the leads. Sean Combs is a literal scream as Hill's crabby boss and Rose Byrne (TV's Damages) is simply outrageous as Aldous's racy rapper ex-girlfriend, which all adds to an increasingly delirious atmosphere. The comedy is close to the knuckle at times, but Hill and Brand counter that with an easy chemistry, while those who normally find Brand too loud or abrasive may be surprised to see his softer side.

While Jackie Collins's Hollywood Wives was a raunchy novel about the behind-the-scenes lives of actors, this is a less explicit tale along the same lines, which boasts its fair share of the scandals, love affairs and skeletons-in-the-closet suffered by Tinseltown's rich and famous. Christopher Plummer is the TV producer of the series Manhattan who experiences a few steamy moments of his own, while the cast of his show including Stephanie Beacham as the star, Linda Purl as the daytime soap queen and Ben Browder as the hot new hunk spends more time jumping in and out of bed than it does filming the series. Silly, over-the-top, and, if you watch for too long, scarily addictive.
