What could audiences have possibly done to deserve such torture? As this inane series continues, each episode becomes sillier and more slapdash than the last. There's no Steve Guttenberg in this one (he must have read the script), and all you need to know is that the bumbling cops, as the title suggests, visit Miami for a convention, which is the only thing that differentiates this extremely mediocre movie from the four that went before.

This reasonable TV-movie thriller opts for psychological chills rather than standard suspense. Katy Boyer plays the newly trained nurse who moves back in with her parents (Gerald McRaney and Shelley Fabares) and discovers that their constant bickering provokes some unpleasant childhood memories. It's well played by the cast and director Christopher Leitch, best known so far for family films such as Courage Mountain and Teen Wolf Too, handles the proceedings with aplomb.

Sharon Stone consolidated her reputation as Hollywood's hottest sex symbol in another steamy thriller from the pen of Joe Eszterhas (adapting Ira Levin's novel), who also scripted her breakthrough hit Basic Instinct. Stone is the rather unlikely book editor who moves into a highly desirable apartment block where the tenants have a worrying habit of moving to the morgue rather than new accommodation. At the same time, she finds herself pursued by two of her neighbours, the oafish author Tom Berenger and the mysterious William Baldwin, either one of whom could be a murderer or a voyeur. Director Phillip Noyce slickly cranks up the tension, making good use of a battery of closed-circuit TV cameras dotted around the building, and, yes, there are some pretty raunchy and explicit sex scenes. However, it lacks Basic Instinct's compulsive drive and Eszterhas's trademark final payoff is a little weak.

Based on Joan Littlewood's stage production, this stylised, satirical and ultimately moving tribute to the soldiers who answered their country's call and fought in the Great War was Richard Attenborough's first film as a director. An all-star cast performs the original's jingoistic music hall songs, which Attenborough cleverly stages in Brighton's Royal Pavilion and on the old West Pier. While there was animosity behind the scenes - Len Deighton refused screen credit as the film's writer - this remains a distinctive piece of work and by far the most audacious film Attenborough has ever made. It also tapped into the Sergeant Pepper style that was all the rage in 1969.

MGM scored a tremendous success with the then topical war film Bataan back in 1943, so it was a Hollywood inevitability that the Philippines would be revisited, though at least it didn't happen until the conflict in the area was nearly at an end. However, instead of the searing campaign study that was expected, RKO plumped for this routine action film starring John Wayne. Still exciting for all that, the plot features a surprisingly subdued Duke as a colonel leading his unit of guerrillas in an undercover mission through the rather obvious studio foliage to victory. Anthony Quinn fights alongside Wayne, and handles the romantic chores, and it's all expertly directed by former editor Edward Dmytryk.

This trite reworking by Nicholas Ray of many themes (and characters) familiar from films such as Howard Hawks's masterly 1943 movie Air Force is corny, obvious and not really good enough. John Wayne and particularly Robert Ryan seem distinctly uncomfortable in their leading roles, flying studio mock-ups of planes against Technicolor back projection and dutifully conveying a gung-ho spirit without any real enthusiasm. The acting honours are stolen by grizzled veteran Jay C Flippen, who's well cast as a wily sergeant, but this must go down as another terribly disappointing early work from Ray, whose Rebel without a Cause remains a key movie of the 1950s.

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

A wonderful definitive adaptation of the great romantic legend, based on the 1919 Johnston McCulley story, with matinée idol Tyrone Power as the swashbuckling Don Diego Vega, alias the masked avenger known as Zorro. Amazingly, Ty is the equal (well, almost) of predecessor Douglas Fairbanks Sr in this lavish black-and-white 20th Century-Fox spectacular. Basil Rathbone makes as superb a villain as he did playing Sir Guy of Gisbourne to Errol Flynn's Robin Hood two years earlier, and the swordfights are terrific. The only trouble is that on TV at the slightly faster speed you can tell that they're faked. For schoolboys of all ages (and their mums if they're Power fans).

In this easy-going Christmas romantic comedy, 13-year-old Kelli Williams receives a glass globe from Santa (Charles Durning) along with a promise that the boy of her dreams will turn up within 20 years. Flash forward and Williams is now a successful lawyer in her 30s, and she's given up waiting. But, just as she seems ready to say yes to former high-school hunk Bruce Thomas, she meets Patrick Muldoon, an attorney whose well-intentioned deception threatens to ruin Santa's carefully laid plans. Brightly played and breezily directed by Kevin Connor, this is a pleasant way to pass the time.

If ever there was a title made for Big John Wayne, this is it. However, the Duke barely gets a look-in, as in reality it's more of a vehicle for his tempestuous co-star Ella Raines, who goes gunning for the Duke in order to woo him. George "Gabby" Hayes is in there, too, in a complex plot in which Wayne is framed for murder as he discovers Ward Bond's crooked plans to steal Audrey Long's ranch. But none of this matters, really. Edwin L Marin's direction is fast-moving, there are two terrific fist fights, and, for those of you who wondered exactly what Wayne got up to during the Second World War, this will answer your question. Incidentally, the screenplay is co-written by Paul P Fix, more usually an actor who often worked with the Duke, most notably in 1967's El Dorado.

Gary Cooper makes a perfect Beau, while Ray Milland and Robert Preston are well cast as his brothers John and Digby in this definitive version of PC Wren's classic Boy's Own saga about the Foreign Legion. Discerning viewers (and silent movie fans) will spot that this is virtually a shot-for-shot remake of the Ronald Colman 1926 film, but a major plus here (apart from sound) is the casting of Brian Donlevy as the evil Sergeant Markoff, who was rewarded with an Oscar nomination for his powerful performance. The heroic and romantic attitudes on display may now seem dated, but that's the fault of the times, not the story. Watch out for a very young Donald O'Connor playing Beau as a boy.

This first-class cavalry western from director John Ford contains some of John Wayne's finest screen moments. Wayne is marvellously in character as retiring commander Nathan Brittles, a performance that even those vehemently anti-Wayne, and all he stood for, feel forced to admire. This is one of the great Technicolor movies, justly winning an Oscar for cinematography that expertly captures Ford's favourite Monument Valley locations. There's also a stirring, majestic soundtrack and a mighty fine supporting cast that includes Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr and the lovely Joanne Dru - ignore the slightly ludicrous Irish whimsy involving Victor McLaglen. This is a deeply satisfying work by one of cinema's greatest film-makers.

This western is notable only for a performance of immense dignity from the great Burt Lancaster as a Mexican-American lawman bent on justice. An unlikely debut for Broadway theatre director Edwin Sherin, who fails to get the most out of the material and quite clearly has no cinema technique. Additionally, the film is crucially under-cast, with a far stronger screen presence than Jon Cypher required as Lancaster's adversary. Only Richard Jordan manages to register among the supports. Shot in Spain, this is a film from a period in Lancaster's career when he simply seemed glad to be working.

This largely successful return to the horror genre by Roman Polanski features sardonic wit, subtle suspense tricks and razor-sharp irony. Johnny Depp plays the rare books expert hired by billionaire Frank Langella to authenticate his copy of an ancient tome that was supposedly written in conjunction with the Devil. Based on Arturo Pérez-Reverte's bestseller El Club Dumas, this satisfying gothic chiller has moody atmosphere, a stunning score (from Wojciech Kilar) and sinister unease to spare as it leads the viewer up numerous garden paths to a disappointing hallucinatory climax.

At first sight, writer/director Mel Gibson's Mayan epic seems intimidating. It's 140 minutes long, has subtitled Yucatec Maya dialogue and is set in pre-Spanish Mexico. Yet despite appearances it's no pretentious art house film but a thrilling chase movie in which Mayan warrior Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood) is pursued through the jungle by a vicious rival tribe eager to use him as a blood sacrifice. Stocking up on sadistic violence, Gibson matches The Passion of the Christ's bloodsoaked tableaux with a catalogue of astonishingly gory beheadings and impalements, all set against the forbidding backdrop of Mayan pyramids and lush tropical undergrowth. He directs the set pieces with style, creating an exciting, exhausting action adventure that's like a strangely compelling hybrid of Mayan mythology, Cannibal Holocaust-style video nasty and Tarzan.
