The Interpreter- (2005)

6.2/10 Stars

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

This engrossing thriller from director Sydney Pollack stars Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, and has the distinction of being the first movie to film inside the United Nations headquarters in New York (something even Hitchcock couldn't manage when he made North by Northwest in 1959). Kidman plays translator Silvia Broome, who overhears a threat to murder an African head of state (Earl Cameron) in a dialect that few can understand. Recently bereaved Secret Service agent Tobin Keller (Penn) is then assigned to keep an eye on the imperilled interpreter, who has herself become an assassination target. But what could have been a routine action affair with a hint of romance takes a distinctly sinister turn as Keller begins to suspect there is more to Broome than meets the eye. Pollack's return to directing (it was his first feature for six years) may be a little too worthy for its own good, but the performances of Kidman and Penn turn this handsome, tightly knit and intelligent film into a vehicle for those who want more than mere entertainment from their political thrillers.

Let the Right One In- (2008)
02:15 - 04:30 - Wed 28/6/17 - Horror Channel
7.4/10 Stars

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

Set in the snowy urban wastes of Stockholm in the early 1980s, this Swedish vampire movie proves unexpectedly moving. It's a curious love story between bullied 12-year-old Oskar (Kare Hedebrant) and Eli (Lina Leandersson), a doe-eyed little girl who hides a dark secret. Based on John Ajvide Lindqvist's bestselling novel, Let the Right One In develops into a muted meditation on violence and vengeance as bloodsucker Eli convinces Oskar to strike back at his tormentors. Director Tomas Alfredson coaxes fragile performances from his two young leads (Leandersson, frequently framed like the subject of a Renaissance portrait, is astonishing). It's undeniably frightening - much grisly bloodletting ensues as Eli's middle-aged helper Hakan (Per Ragnar) drains local youths of their haemoglobin - yet Alfredson's light touch adds soulful delicacy and a certain ambiguity to the proceedings, making this a horror movie more likely to prompt tears than screams.

After the successful but preposterous weepie Magnificent Obsession, director Douglas Sirk reteamed with stars Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson for this exquisite melodrama. Wealthy widow Cary Scott (Wyman) risks the disapproval of her curtain-twitching neighbours and her own grown-up children when she embarks on a May-December romance with free-spirited gardener Ron Kirby (Hudson). Both leads are wonderful, with Hudson in particular bringing charm and tenderness to his role. Sumptuous Technicolor photography and lavish sets and costumes mean the film looks beautiful, and Sirk cleverly juxtaposes this with the ugliness of the attitudes that lie just beneath the surface. He deftly critiques the moral values (and hypocrisy) of 1950s America while simultaneously crafting a genuinely touching romance, making this one to melt even the hardest of hearts.

Brad Pitt stars as the Grim Reaper in this remake of the 1934 fantasy Death Takes a Holiday, giving ailing media magnate Anthony Hopkins an offer he can't refuse - extra life, provided Death can spend a few days living among mortals. However, no one is more startled by Pitt's arrival than Hopkins's beautiful daughter (Claire Forlani), because Death (who adopts the pseudonym "Joe Black") has taken over the body of the handsome stranger she met earlier in a coffee shop. Martin Brest's weepie is nicely played but overlong - especially considering the original zipped by in under 80 minutes.

The Nazis stood no chance once they knew they were up against the Allies' own secret weapon - Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson. This modernised, morale-boosting story draws only a fraction of the plot from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's source story The Dancing Men, as Holmes and Watson search for a unique bombsight that could determine the outcome of the Second World War. Basil Rathbone and Nigel Bruce give their customary performances as Baker Street's finest, while Lionel Atwill is believably malevolent as baleful baddie Moriarty. The film was the first in the series to be directed by Roy William Neill, who must have been doing something right - he went on to make ten more before his death in 1946.

While many of Hollywood's tales about heroism during the Second World War were tainted by smug patriotism and unwelcome sentiment, postwar British cinema tended to handle the events of the conflict with fidelity and dignity, thanks no doubt to its worthy documentary heritage. This inspiring tale of unassuming courage is one of the finest in a proud tradition. Lewis Gilbert masterfully makes the drama as compelling as the action sequences, and Kenneth More gives the performance of his career playing Douglas Bader, the cocky pilot who overcame the loss of his legs in a pre-war flying accident to become one of the RAF's most decorated heroes.

What has Mel Gibson got against the English? Five years after his Scottish epic Braveheart, he repeats his anti-English stance in this action drama, set during the American War of Independence. Mel plays Benjamin Martin, a farmer living peacefully in South Carolina who, along with his gung-ho son Gabriel (Heath Ledger), comes out fighting against the British army. The battle scenes are ferociously well staged, but some may baulk at the almost pantomimic villainy of Jason Isaacs's cruel Colonel Tavington and the historically inaccurate atrocities that he is seen to commit.

This has little of the flair we've come to expect from Steven Soderbergh, the Oscar-winning director of Traffic, and it does resemble a standard "issue of the week" TV movie. Yet this drama's ace in the hole is Soderbergh's fellow Oscar winner (for best actress) Julia Roberts, who earns every cent of her $20-million salary in a sensationally showy role as the spirited heroine. A twice-divorced mother of three, Brockovich lands a job in the office of a small-time lawyer (Albert Finney), and there she stumbles across some misplaced medical records while filing real estate documents. Intrigued, she investigates, eventually uncovering evidence that a power company has wrecked the health of a local community with contaminated water. Based on a true story, Soderbergh's emotionally rich drama is compulsive viewing, thanks not only to Roberts's throat-grabbing performance, but also to Finney's lovable turn as the minor-league attorney who's well out of his depth and a perfectly pitched script by Susannah Grant. While the film is too long, it remains compelling throughout.
