They can't stand each other, but they have to raise a child together. That's the premise of this unlikely, uneven and unlikeable comedy drama starring Katherine Heigl (27 Dresses) and Josh Duhamel (the Transformers films). They play warring acquaintances who become instant parents when their mutual best friends die and leave them as legal guardians of their daughter. The two leads have screen appeal, but the chemistry between them is thin, while the story is hackneyed and far-fetched; leaving a child to two workaholic narcissists doesn't ring true, and neither does Heigl running into Dr Right (Josh Lucas) within minutes of becoming a "mother". And the overly candid woman from Child Protective Services adds an extra frisson of risibility. Despite the morbid premise, the few poignant moments that exist are believable, if brief; Heigl in particular acquits herself well. Look out for Christina Hendricks (Mad Men) in a brief supporting role.

You can see how the writer pitched this project: The Exorcist meets John Grisham. Keanu Reeves plays a hotshot lawyer from Florida who's lured to a New York law firm run by Al Pacino. Pacino's character name, John Milton, is an unsubtle signpost to the diabolical turn of events in a movie that sways unsteadily between a debate over good and evil and a half-successful attempt at black comedy. It's the heavy-handed dropping of clues, including supernatural visions from Reeves's ignored wife, Charlize Theron, that makes the eventual revelation a very tardy one as far as the viewer is concerned. There isn't a single scene that's remotely believable, but the whole concoction, right down to the Ghost Busters finale, is mindlessly enjoyable and directed by Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman, Ray) with po-faced urgency.

This western is notable only for a performance of immense dignity from the great Burt Lancaster as a Mexican-American lawman bent on justice. An unlikely debut for Broadway theatre director Edwin Sherin, who fails to get the most out of the material and quite clearly has no cinema technique. Additionally, the film is crucially under-cast, with a far stronger screen presence than Jon Cypher required as Lancaster's adversary. Only Richard Jordan manages to register among the supports. Shot in Spain, this is a film from a period in Lancaster's career when he simply seemed glad to be working.

This absolutely wonderful comedy thriller from Stanley Donen (co-director, with Gene Kelly, of On the Town and Singin' in the Rain) nearly out-Hitchcocks Hitchcock. With a MacGuffin so clever you'll never guess, and a dream pairing of Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn on ravishing Parisian locations, what more could you possibly want in the way of movie entertainment? There's a clever plot (by Peter Stone) that never lets up, a marvellous romantic score (by Henry Mancini), star-making turns from Walter Matthau and James Coburn, and some magnificent set pieces: Grant taking a shower fully-clothed; Hepburn and Grant falling in love on a Paris river boat; and a one-handed villain in a roof-top cliffhanger. This terrific movie's got the lot. Jonathan Demme directed a disastrous remake in 2002, with Mark Wahlberg and Thandie Newton in the lead roles.

Scott McGinnis and Jeff Osterhage try valiantly to drum up some knockabout bonhomie here as Wild West outlaws enrolled in a British fighter squadron during the First World War, but everything from the stereotypical characters to the risible banter is against them. Bearing in mind the technical expertise of director Zoran Perisic (who worked on the special effects for Superman) and experienced cinematographer David Watkin, this adventure should at least have looked good. However, the aerial action is so inept that it only emphasises the shortcomings of a buddy movie that compounds its crimes by wasting such a promising premise.

TV-movie queen Jaclyn Smith stars as a distraught surgeon in this unfortunate soap opera-style tale - first her husband dies, then she is raped in the hospital car park on her first day at work. This humdrum romantic fantasy is no more than a minor entry in the Mel Gibson canon. The star obviously had to dig deep to find the enthusiasm to carry off his tired role, playing a cryogenic Rip Van Winkle who wakes 53 years after he was frozen and forgotten. Hollywood used to churn out this kind of fluff with practised ease and it's a pity director Steve Miner couldn't have found the same winning formula here. That said, the reunions are touching, Jamie Lee Curtis provides charming support, and at least we're spared the usual smug time-lapse jokes.

Characters from Nickelodeon's popular TV series Rugrats get their own movie in this fun feature-length animated adventure. Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Curry and David Spade are among the celebrities lending their voices, as cute toddler Tommy Pickles persuades his pals to help him return his new-born brother, Dil, to the hospital so that he can have his parents all to himself again. Of course, their journey doesn't go as planned, and the youngsters end up in a scary forest where they come across a group of circus monkeys who kidnap Dil. Messages about bravery and friendship are well mixed in with the fun so as not to spoil the enjoyment for children, and there are plenty of laughs for adults, too, especially in the various movie homages, including superb spoofs of famous scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Fugitive. Indeed, Nickelodeon conducted "parent-focused research" to make sure the movie had enough "multi-generational appeal" to guarantee box-office success. The result is a treat for all the family.

This impeccable adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-winning novel stars Anthony Hopkins as the emotionally repressed butler and Emma Thompson as the housekeeper he possibly loves. Framed in flashbacks, the story is an English twist on Jean Renoir's classic La Règle du Jeu, a broad view of a narrow class of aristocrats on the verge of self-destruction. Co-starring James Fox as a fascistic English lord and Christopher Reeve as an American diplomat (the past and present owners of Darlington Hall), it is as much a study in power and politics as it is Hopkins's blinkered view of the world from behind the gleaming silver salvers. The 1930s and 40s settings are immaculately staged, and, unlike James Ivory's earlier dramatisations of EM Forster, this picture has real backbone: Ivory's direction is alive to every nuance and chink of the sherry glasses.

The iconic Japanese anime character makes his Hollywood debut in this sweet-natured and colourful futuristic adventure. Brilliant scientist Dr Tenma (voiced by Nicolas Cage) is devastated when his equally brilliant son Toby (Freddie Highmore) is accidentally killed during an experiment. Tenma builds a robotic replacement, but abandons him when he doesn't live up to expectations. Left to fend for himself, the robot becomes Astro Boy and discovers the true extent of his powers when an evil force threatens the world. The film presents some fairly adult themes in an understandable way, and it's also less cheesy and sentimental than a lot of animated fare. But it still packs in some exciting action sequences and impressive comic relief in the shape of the hapless Robot Liberation Front (whose leader is voiced by Little Britain's Matt Lucas).

This big-budget, epic-scale version of the Man of Steel legend is irresistible, fabulous entertainment. The elegiac opening - from the destruction of Krypton via Clark Kent's early years in Smallville to his arrival at the Daily Planet in Metropolis - turns more traditional comic book when Clark falls for Lois Lane, before a bright and breezy confrontation with comedic criminal Lex Luthor. The deliberate clash of styles generates much excitement and, yes, you'll believe a man can fly. Christopher Reeve is perfectly cast (though Smallville fans may disagree) and as a spectacle it's a highly satisfying confection that has set the standard other comic-book adaptations must try to match.

Unsurprisingly, chaos ensues as Big Momma tries to juggle law enforcement and "her"own unconventional take on domestic perfection. With its tired plot and weak dialogue, the film is forced to focus on cheap, visual gags, getting extensive comic mileage from the idiosyncrasies of Momma and her three dysfunctional charges. Director John Whitesell (Malibu's Most Wanted) works hard to keep the humour flowing, but despite occasional moments of crude hilarity, there's just not enough substance here to justify this lazy cash-in.

Expanded from his own play by Robert Harling, this comedy drama provided juicy roles for some of Hollywood's leading ladies at a time when muscle-bound action heroes held sway at the box office. Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts interact so beautifully as they discuss men, the menopause, manicures and marriage in Dolly Parton's kitsch small-town beauty salon that it was something of a surprise that only Roberts scooped an Oscar nomination. But it's Shirley MacLaine as the town's outsider (complete with her headstrong mutt) who steals the show with a wonderful display of crankiness and compassion, and just a little flirtatiousness thrown in for good measure. Director Herbert Ross times every gag and tear to perfection, but he fails to find enough for the guys to do, which is a shame as Tom Skerritt, Sam Shepard and Dylan McDermott are all good enough actors to give strong performances without having to hold centre stage. This is a little too dependent on sassy one-liners and is awash with sentiment by the end, but is still wonderful entertainment.

Adapted from Anne Fine's book Alias Madame Doubtfire, this knowing blend of comedy and common sense is family entertainment par excellence. Aided by Oscar-winning make-up, Robin Williams gives one of the performances of his career as an actor who disguises himself as a Scottish nanny to be close to his children after he splits from wife Sally Field. Director Chris Columbus should be given credit for reining in the Williams exuberance that often overbalances his pictures, while retaining enough of his quick-fire personality to ensure that just about every gag hits its target. Raising the occasional quizzical eyebrow in bewilderment, Pierce Brosnan also does well as the bachelor looking for a ready-made family, but Field overdoes the exasperation and the film's a lot more fun when she's not around. It's a little long and some scenes misfire, notably Williams's routine with the dinosaurs and the resultant TV show, but cracking set pieces, such as the make-up experiments and the series of table-hopping quick changes, more than make amends. No matter how many times you've seen it already, it's worth watching again just for Mara Wilson, playing one of the daughters, who was even more impressive in Danny DeVito's adaptation of Roald Dahl's Matilda.

This is by far Joel and Ethan Coen's most expensive film and also their first working from an existing script. That it turns out to be their weakest effort so far may not be unconnected. A slick, colourful screwball comedy (like their own Hudsucker Proxy without the period setting), it follows the quest of ultra-successful divorce lawyer Miles Massey (George Clooney) to marry professional gold-digger Marylin Rexroth (Catherine Zeta-Jones) using his own cast-iron "pre-nup". This being a Coen brothers film, it's populated with wonderful, often grotesque supporting characters including Edward Herrmann's philandering millionaire, Billy Bob Thornton's dozy oilman and Jonathan Hadary's eccentric trial witness. But when these turns distract from rather than add to the central plot, you're in dangerous territory. There are moments of inspired, slapstick brilliance (not least those featuring an asthmatic hitman), and Clooney works his socks off, but it lacks a hard centre and plot keeps racing ahead of character. It's neither as unhinged as their Raising Arizona nor as warm as Fargo; let's hope this is an isolated blip on the Coens' graph.

Stand-up comedian Chris Rock makes his first appearance in the franchise as a wisecracking cop, but the most notable new addition is Jet Li, the Hong Kong action star whose awesome fighting skills leave the rest of the cast looking rather old and ungainly. Otherwise it's business as usual, with director Richard Donner laying on the requisite destruction as Gibson and Glover track down a ruthless Triad gang that specialises in smuggling immigrants.

The title of James Gray's murky thriller was a motto used by the New York police in the 1980s. In this film's ambiguous moral world, though, it's uncertain who the night really belongs to. Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix) is the manager of a Brooklyn nightclub owned by a Russian family with criminal connections. His bosses are unaware that Bobby's father (Robert Duvall) and brother (Mark Wahlberg) are cops leading the operation against a drug dealer operating out of the club. But it's not long before Bobby is forced to abandon his neutral stance and become a reluctant informant - a decision that also rebounds on his girlfriend Amada (Eva Mendes). Phoenix in particular excels, teasing out the muted tragedy of a man who's forced to choose sides. While Gray's touch is sometimes clumsy, he pulls off at least one coup: a car chase in a rain storm, the action viewed between the swish of windscreen wiper blades. Like the director's earlier work, The Yards and Little Odessa, this ambitious thriller largely avoids the expected clichés and concentrates instead on the price of familial loyalties.

This slick vision of the future comes pretty close to being Sylvester Stallone's best ever picture. Wisely keeping his tongue stuck firmly in his cheek, Stallone plays a tough cop whose unconventional methods land him in a cryogenic prison. Decades later, he is defrosted to hunt down an old sparring partner, the spectacularly psychopathic Wesley Snipes (complete with blond thatch), who has escaped from his deep frozen state and is creating havoc in the now crime-free Los Angeles (renamed San Angeles). The writers have a lot of fun sending up modern-day political correctness in this caring vision of the future - violence, red meat and sex are among the items on the banned list - and director Marco Brambilla delivers the goods when it comes to the all-important action set pieces. Of the supporting cast, Sandra Bullock has an early run at a role she would later perfect in Speed, Denis Leary gets to deliver one of his thinly disguised stand-up routines, while Nigel Hawthorne plays the doctor overseeing this 21st-century Utopia.

Humans are the hunted minority in a near-future world populated by vampires in this intriguingly weird sci-fi/horror hybrid from the Spierig brothers. Principled vampire scientist Ethan Hawke creates a synthetic plasma substitute to ensure mankind's survival, although his boss (Sam Neill) is making a fortune out of harvesting blood at inflated prices. A pointed allegory on corporate greed, this clever revitalisation of the genre shows that the co-writer/directors have coolly and confidently delivered on the raw talent displayed in their debut zombie feature Undead. With beautiful Blade Runner-style cityscapes, smartly conceived takes on the vampire mythos (sun-proofed cars and video mirrors), inventively engineered shocks and copious blood loss, this is an engagingly skilful blend of John Carpenter, Bram Stoker and Philip K Dick. Hawke is terrific - Before Sunrise now takes on a whole new meaning - while Willem Dafoe ramps up the fun factor as a Van Helsing-type with a big secret.

This engrossing thriller from director Sydney Pollack stars Nicole Kidman and Sean Penn, and has the distinction of being the first movie to film inside the United Nations headquarters in New York (something even Hitchcock couldn't manage when he made North by Northwest in 1959). Kidman plays translator Silvia Broome, who overhears a threat to murder an African head of state (Earl Cameron) in a dialect that few can understand. Recently bereaved Secret Service agent Tobin Keller (Penn) is then assigned to keep an eye on the imperilled interpreter, who has herself become an assassination target. But what could have been a routine action affair with a hint of romance takes a distinctly sinister turn as Keller begins to suspect there is more to Broome than meets the eye. Pollack's return to directing (it was his first feature for six years) may be a little too worthy for its own good, but the performances of Kidman and Penn turn this handsome, tightly knit and intelligent film into a vehicle for those who want more than mere entertainment from their political thrillers.

As this true-life New York crime saga (set between 1968 and 1974) evocatively unfolds, master director Ridley Scott makes "big" look easy. Denzel Washington brings a suave tranquillity to his role as emerging Harlem drugs lord Frank Lucas (all the better to explode into sudden violence), while, in parallel, Russell Crowe's honest New Jersey cop Richie Roberts juggles divorce, pariah status within a corrupt police department and, eventually, the logistics of bringing Lucas down. It's as if The Godfather, GoodFellas and Scarface met TV's The Wire: grand overstatement combined with procedural detail and junkie sleaze. Beyond Josh Brolin's poisonously bad cop, a fine supporting cast struggles to make any meaningful impact in the wake of a dominant Washington - not least in the poorly sketched female roles - and fidelity to events takes the dramatic sting out of an operatic climax. Nevertheless, this is still a classy crime fable that succeeds despite sidestepping the electric set pieces of such genre maestros as Martin Scorsese or Brian De Palma.

This romantic and glamorous mix of the sentimental and the supernatural reaps higher rewards than Patrick Swayze's acting ability deserves. He plays the murdered banker trying to warn girlfriend Demi Moore she's in mortal danger via psychic Whoopi Goldberg, who provides the comic moments so necessary to lighten the potentially maudlin atmosphere. In fact, her performance is so good, she deservedly won a best supporting actress Oscar. The special effects are a real treat, the love-beyond-the-grave theme is very touching and the ending is a wonderful piece of schmaltz. Who says sweetness and light are, er, dead?
