... and another largely pointless reprise from the Hollywood mill. Although original stars Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte are reunited with director Walter Hill, all three seem to be going through the motions here. Nolte is the same rough and ready cop who is forced to team up again with con Murphy, this time in a bid to salvage his own career. Ironically, that seems to be the reason for this sequel in real life for Murphy; whereas in the original he was electrifying, here he verges on self-parody. The action is spectacular enough, though, and Hill makes sure he uses up his much bigger budget with increasingly ludicrous set pieces.

Three years after her family were brutally slaughtered by deranged teacher Richard Fenton (Johnathon Schaech), distraught teen Donna (Brittany Snow) prepares to attend her senior prom. Naturally, it falls on the day that her homicidal stalker escapes from prison, intent on finishing what he started. Director Nelson McCormick's loose remake of the 1980 horror proves to be lighter on gore, thrills, suspense and sense - taking the soft option at every turn. Stupid students do the same stupid things, with loads of annoying false scares thrown into the dismally bland process. It's as though the film-makers know their target demographic will be spending as much time texting their mates as watching the movie. So who cares how flimsy the plot is, as long as there are beautiful people up on the screen and dance hits on the soundtrack?

The foundation of online phenomenon Facebook comes in for scrutiny in this fact-based drama, which turns the site's formative years into a morality tale for our times. Computer-science student Mark Zuckerberg (Jesse Eisenberg, giving a subtly commanding performance) is an unloved outsider at Harvard in 2003, but finds a way of circumventing the university's traditional elite by creating the networking technology that eventually makes him one of the world's youngest billionaires. Along the way, there's camaraderie, betrayal, class tension and much litigation: both his one-time best pal Eduardo Saverin (Andrew Garfield, providing the conscience of the piece) and super-snooty rivals the Winklevoss twins (Armie Hammer, in a dual role) sue for their slice of an increasingly large pie. The dazzling wordplay from screenwriter Aaron Sorkin (TV's The West Wing) and David Fincher's intensely focused direction work in concert to favour character conflict over computer geekery, digging deep to elucidate the story's essential tensions between greed and loyalty, and online and real-world friendship. It's riveting stuff, not least when Justin Timberlake swaggers on as cocksure internet visionary Sean "Napster" Parker. Most significant though, is how this brilliantly assembled cautionary tale gets straight to the heart of the human needs and failings underpinning dizzying technological advancement, creating one of the truly defining films of its era.

Steven Seagal releases movies like a B-52 drops its payload. This entry in his nonstop carpet-bombing campaign (twelve movies in four years) sees him playing a washed-up, alcoholic ex-cop with gambling debts and a young daughter who he ought to be taking better care of. Instead of joining AA meetings, though, his 12-step programme involves being dispatched by Lance Henriksen's shadowy government operative to wipe out various bad guys. Half-baked character development scenes see Seagal staring into glasses of whisky and furrowing his brow, while the action proves just as leaden. Kept largely immobile by his paunch, Seagal takes out bad guys with nothing more than his arms and a scowl - even killing a table of diners from a seated position using the silverware. The final shoot-out is set in a graveyard, which is fitting since Seagal appears to be writing the epitaph to his career.

This is not up to the standard of the previous two Sinbad adventures - it's too long and Patrick Wayne is a distinctly charisma-free hero. But there's still plenty of pleasure to be had from the special effects of Ray Harryhausen, who enhances this romantic exotica with his distinctive brand of visual thrills. Highlights include a chess-playing baboon, three axe-wielding ghouls, a sabre-toothed tiger and a one-horned troglodyte. These all help to pass the time agreeably between the frothy Arabian Nights nonsense standing in for the plot.

This routine reworking of the 1960s Robert Culp/Bill Cosby TV espionage series has US secret agent Alex Scott (Owen Wilson) going undercover as the assistant to boxing champion Kelly Robinson (Eddie Murphy). Scott uses Robinson to get close to a billionaire industrialist (Malcolm McDowell), who is intent on selling an invisible plane to the highest bidder. The laid-back Wilson and the motormouthed Murphy have an engaging on-screen chemistry - the movie is at its best during their obviously improvised bouts of bickering - and there is some fun spy gadgetry on display. However, the likeable twosome are sold short by witless writing, predictable plotting and bog-standard action sequences that fail to spark this action comedy into any sort of life.

A year before he won his first Oscar, Tom Hanks provided the laughs as an alcoholic ex-professional hired to coach a women's baseball team during the Second World War in this comedy drama. The assembled players include Geena Davis and Tank Girl's Lori Petty as sisters, Madonna as (of course) the team floozy and comedian Rosie O'Donnell as her best friend. Penny Marshall, who also directed Hanks in Big, has put together a somewhat uneven film, but any roughness is smoothed over by the talented cast and a great deal of charm and affection for the era.

Given that plot is never a key element of Jackie Chan's oeuvre, it's no surprise that only two elements really matter: the chemistry between the two inevitable buddies/partners and the quality of the action. Sadly, both are well below par in this Dublin-set farrago. Chan stars as cop Eddie Yang, whose search for evil crime lord Snakehead (Julian Sands) leads to the discovery of an ancient medallion and a kidnapped boy, who does little but sit unnaturally still and look inscrutable. Inexplicably semi-dubbed and looking like it was edited on a bacon slicer, this barely releasable mess couldn't possibly get any worse until Lee Evans deftly applies the tin lid with an excruciatingly irritating performance. Even Chan's undoubted screen charm can't rescue this inept mess.

When Bruce Lee died suddenly in 1973, the industry he helped bring to a wider audience lost no time in churning out a string of shabby, vaguely tasteless exploitation pieces. This is one of the best known of his posthumous releases and one of the worst. The Lee character - predominantly stand-in Kim Tai Jong - finds himself up against a ruthless gangster (Dean Jagger), who kidnaps his girlfriend (Colleen Camp). The makers originally claimed the film would be drawing on 100 minutes of never-before-seen footage, but precious little seems to have made it to the screen and, apart from a beautifully edited end sequence featuring Lee at his best, this is an embarrassing mess. Inevitably, Chuck Norris is in there, too.

What has Mel Gibson got against the English? Five years after his Scottish epic Braveheart, he repeats his anti-English stance in this action drama, set during the American War of Independence. Mel plays Benjamin Martin, a farmer living peacefully in South Carolina who, along with his gung-ho son Gabriel (Heath Ledger), comes out fighting against the British army. The battle scenes are ferociously well staged, but some may baulk at the almost pantomimic villainy of Jason Isaacs's cruel Colonel Tavington and the historically inaccurate atrocities that he is seen to commit.

Boogeyman- (2005)
21:00 - 22:50 - Fri 5/5/17 - Horror Channel
4.7/10 Stars

You've got to hand it to director Stephen T Kay. Boogeyman is sloppily written, makes no sense, never convinces that its New Zealand locations are rural Pennsylvania, and ends in a confusing glut of CGI special effects. But it still manages to scare up a fair amount of shivers and jolts, thanks to Kay's well-oiled if clichéd style - all extreme close-ups on twisting doorknobs, dizzying races through cobwebby corridors and moody flashbacks. In an excessively generic story, Barry Watson returns to his childhood home to confront his greatest fear, the monster that he believes dwells in his bedroom closet and that snatched his father when he was eight years old. There are gaping plot holes here, but also enough cheap thrills to paper over them, so you'll jump as often as you ask "What is going on?".

Writer/director M Night Shyamalan's once glorious reputation is tarnished further by this tediously juvenile fantasy adventure in which the Fire Nation and its vengeful Prince Zuko (Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel) want to rule Air, Water and Earth. But will young Avatar Aang (Noah Ringer) fulfil his destiny as controller of all four elements and return harmony to the universe? Based on a popular American animé series, this often incomprehensible, potted live-action update is so overloaded with CGI animation, the conversion almost feels redundant. A mix of hackneyed Tolkien fantasy, Brothers Grimm fairy tale and Old Testament cliché is evident in the heavily subplotted story, and the blanket banality is increased by Shyamalan's completely bland direction and wooden performances by his child stars. A few epic vistas and images are spectacular - notably the tsunami wall of water holding the Fire Nation's ships at bay - but most of the elemental "bending" is poorly conceived and unexciting, especially in the 3D repackaging.

Mixing elements of frisky French farce with middle-class American comedy, It's Complicated is a daffy and delectable spree from Nancy Meyers (Something's Gotta Give). Meryl Streep plays Jane, a divorced mum of three who runs a bakery and lives in upmarket southern California splendour, having split from her husband Jake (Alec Baldwin) a decade before. Meeting at their son's graduation, Jane aasnd Jake end up in bed together, igniting the thought that their ten years apart might have prepared them to reunite, despite Jake's current marriage to the much younger Agness (Lake Bell). Adding a wrinkle to proceedings is Adam (Steve Martin), a divorced architect who woos Jane with cautious optimism. Although seemingly stuck in Mamma Mia! mode, Streep's polite resistance is the perfect foil for Baldwin's earnest portrayal of a horny old dog. It's a thoughtful, daring and fun film, in which Meyers, once again, has put some glamour into the sex lives of the 50-somethings.

As this true-life New York crime saga (set between 1968 and 1974) evocatively unfolds, master director Ridley Scott makes "big" look easy. Denzel Washington brings a suave tranquillity to his role as emerging Harlem drugs lord Frank Lucas (all the better to explode into sudden violence), while, in parallel, Russell Crowe's honest New Jersey cop Richie Roberts juggles divorce, pariah status within a corrupt police department and, eventually, the logistics of bringing Lucas down. It's as if The Godfather, GoodFellas and Scarface met TV's The Wire: grand overstatement combined with procedural detail and junkie sleaze. Beyond Josh Brolin's poisonously bad cop, a fine supporting cast struggles to make any meaningful impact in the wake of a dominant Washington - not least in the poorly sketched female roles - and fidelity to events takes the dramatic sting out of an operatic climax. Nevertheless, this is still a classy crime fable that succeeds despite sidestepping the electric set pieces of such genre maestros as Martin Scorsese or Brian De Palma.

You can see how the writer pitched this project: The Exorcist meets John Grisham. Keanu Reeves plays a hotshot lawyer from Florida who's lured to a New York law firm run by Al Pacino. Pacino's character name, John Milton, is an unsubtle signpost to the diabolical turn of events in a movie that sways unsteadily between a debate over good and evil and a half-successful attempt at black comedy. It's the heavy-handed dropping of clues, including supernatural visions from Reeves's ignored wife, Charlize Theron, that makes the eventual revelation a very tardy one as far as the viewer is concerned. There isn't a single scene that's remotely believable, but the whole concoction, right down to the Ghost Busters finale, is mindlessly enjoyable and directed by Taylor Hackford (An Officer and a Gentleman, Ray) with po-faced urgency.
