James Woods seemingly has a knack for spotting mediocre movies with roles that give him the chance to shine when his co-stars are floundering. This is a case in point, as he strides off with Luis Llosa's bomb thriller without even getting his hair mussed. Sylvester Stallone stars as an explosives expert and former colleague of Woods, who is hired by the mysterious Sharon Stone to avenge the death of her parents. There is, of course, more to her motives than is at first apparent. The stars apart, it's the robust playing of the supporting cast (which includes Rod Steiger and Eric Roberts as Miami mobsters) that really makes this worth watching. John Barry's lush score adds to the mix, too.

Shot around the Great Barrier Reef, this is the true story of the Carpenter family, who spent 37 days at sea waiting to be rescued after their boat was capsized by whales. It's an incredible tale of human endurance and those involved were clearly remarkable people, but, translated into TV drama and aimed at a family audience, their experiences end up looking rather clichéd. And don't expect cinema-standard special effects because the budget obviously wasn't there. However, seasoned actors Robert Urich and Ali MacGraw show the necessary charisma and strength of character to make the film worth watching, and they're backed by some spirited performances from the younger members of the cast.

Actor Morgan Freeman (Driving Miss Daisy) produced this made-for-TV true historical drama illuminating a dark episode in American history. In 1944, a segregated unit of black seamen, who are poorly trained and ill-equipped, are forced by belittling, racist officers to load dangerous munitions at a navy base in California. After an explosion kills more than 300 men, 50 black sailors take a stand and refuse to work. Although conventionally told, the film is full of convincing period detail and powerfully conveys the anger of a group of men determined to seek justice. A compelling film that will you leave you outraged, yet satisfied.

MGM scored a tremendous success with the then topical war film Bataan back in 1943, so it was a Hollywood inevitability that the Philippines would be revisited, though at least it didn't happen until the conflict in the area was nearly at an end. However, instead of the searing campaign study that was expected, RKO plumped for this routine action film starring John Wayne. Still exciting for all that, the plot features a surprisingly subdued Duke as a colonel leading his unit of guerrillas in an undercover mission through the rather obvious studio foliage to victory. Anthony Quinn fights alongside Wayne, and handles the romantic chores, and it's all expertly directed by former editor Edward Dmytryk.

This wonderfully wacky wartime comedy teams those two great farceurs Cary Grant and Tony Curtis in their only movie together; ironically (or intentionally, since Grant produced), it was made immediately following Curtis's take-off of Grant in Some Like It Hot. Here Grant plays a submarine commander trying to keep his ropey old vessel in the water with the help of wheeler-dealer junior officer Curtis. Complications arise as the sub takes on board a number of unorthodox passengers, among them a group of sexy nurses. Grant is brilliant, with every reaction immaculately timed. Pink Panther director Blake Edwards ensures no gag is missed, and the whole is a deliciously tasteless joy.

This trite reworking by Nicholas Ray of many themes (and characters) familiar from films such as Howard Hawks's masterly 1943 movie Air Force is corny, obvious and not really good enough. John Wayne and particularly Robert Ryan seem distinctly uncomfortable in their leading roles, flying studio mock-ups of planes against Technicolor back projection and dutifully conveying a gung-ho spirit without any real enthusiasm. The acting honours are stolen by grizzled veteran Jay C Flippen, who's well cast as a wily sergeant, but this must go down as another terribly disappointing early work from Ray, whose Rebel without a Cause remains a key movie of the 1950s.

The title could well refer to the two stars, both, alas, well past their sell-by dates, in this undistinguished but nevertheless beautifully photographed (by veteran cameraman William Clothier) western. Toupeed, paunchy John Wayne plays a Union colonel on his way to Mexico who confronts mustachioed Rock Hudson - shades of McMillan and Wife - as a Confederate colonel, but the theme of post-Civil War reconciliation ensures that no sparks fly between the two leads. There's no real chemistry either, deepening the suspicion that Wayne and Hudson had little in common, either on or off screen. Director Andrew V McLaglen seems to have had problems locating the right tone for this tale, but US football fans might relish the casting of gridiron stars Roman Gabriel and Merlin Olsen, while lovers of the genre might recall the glory days of those members of John Ford's repertory company present here: Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr and John Agar.

This first-class cavalry western from director John Ford contains some of John Wayne's finest screen moments. Wayne is marvellously in character as retiring commander Nathan Brittles, a performance that even those vehemently anti-Wayne, and all he stood for, feel forced to admire. This is one of the great Technicolor movies, justly winning an Oscar for cinematography that expertly captures Ford's favourite Monument Valley locations. There's also a stirring, majestic soundtrack and a mighty fine supporting cast that includes Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr and the lovely Joanne Dru - ignore the slightly ludicrous Irish whimsy involving Victor McLaglen. This is a deeply satisfying work by one of cinema's greatest film-makers.

This routine reworking of the 1960s Robert Culp/Bill Cosby TV espionage series has US secret agent Alex Scott (Owen Wilson) going undercover as the assistant to boxing champion Kelly Robinson (Eddie Murphy). Scott uses Robinson to get close to a billionaire industrialist (Malcolm McDowell), who is intent on selling an invisible plane to the highest bidder. The laid-back Wilson and the motormouthed Murphy have an engaging on-screen chemistry - the movie is at its best during their obviously improvised bouts of bickering - and there is some fun spy gadgetry on display. However, the likeable twosome are sold short by witless writing, predictable plotting and bog-standard action sequences that fail to spark this action comedy into any sort of life.

If ever there was a title made for Big John Wayne, this is it. However, the Duke barely gets a look-in, as in reality it's more of a vehicle for his tempestuous co-star Ella Raines, who goes gunning for the Duke in order to woo him. George "Gabby" Hayes is in there, too, in a complex plot in which Wayne is framed for murder as he discovers Ward Bond's crooked plans to steal Audrey Long's ranch. But none of this matters, really. Edwin L Marin's direction is fast-moving, there are two terrific fist fights, and, for those of you who wondered exactly what Wayne got up to during the Second World War, this will answer your question. Incidentally, the screenplay is co-written by Paul P Fix, more usually an actor who often worked with the Duke, most notably in 1967's El Dorado.

Quite a feat. Their characters are deaf and blind respectively, and the movie hinges on a series of appalling jokes and unoriginal situations, wrapped around a makeshift murder plot. As well as being an original comic talent, Richard Pryor has also had the dubious distinction of appearing in a plethora of truly execrable movies, and this is certainly one of them.

Having made his name in the title role of the Australian-set drama Smiley, contemporary critics had high hopes for ten-year-old Colin Petersen. He tries hard in this well intentioned story of a delinquent given a second chance, but he never convinces either as the urchin son of alcoholic music-hall actor Terence Morgan or as the confused kid cajoled by teacher Richard Attenborough and his wife Dorothy Alison. It must have been a relief to Attenborough not to have been given the juvenile lead himself (having just stopped playing tearaways three years earlier!), but that doesn't excuse his overdoing the glutinous bourgeois benevolence.

A spoilt American kid is transplanted to China in this fun remake of the 1984 children's favourite. Dre (Jaden Smith, son of Will and Jada Pinkett) moves from Detroit to Beijing with his widowed mother (Taraji P Henson of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button), only to find himself up against the school bullies in a martial arts tournament. Jackie Chan keeps his usual ebullience under wraps as Mr Han, the quiet janitor who becomes Dre's reluctant trainer. The action sequences, as expected with Chan, are amazing. These, along with a snappy pace, stunning locations and credible performances, counterbalance the film's overlong running time. Thanks to a tight script, even fans of the original franchise will find the ending stirring and surprising. Sticklers will, however, love pointing out that what Mr Han teaches Dre is not karate, but kung fu.

Ryan Reynolds needs every ounce of his considerable charm in this long-winded and lethargic romantic comedy from the producers of Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason and Wimbledon. Reynolds plays a New York advertising executive who, on the eve of his divorce, is asked by his precocious ten-year-old (Little Miss Sunshine's Abigail Breslin) to tell all about his love life before his marriage. So, in one of those scenarios beloved of Hollywood movies, he decides to spill the beans about his three serious girlfriends, but alters their names in the process. We have to guess which girl dad actually married: was it girl-next-door Emily (Elizabeth Banks); best buddy and co-worker April (Isla Fisher); or free spirit Summer (Rachel Weisz)? As the seemingly interminable series of flashbacks and flash-forwards unfolds, you may find it hard to care.

By the time this movie was released the Bond franchise had become steeped in self-parody, aided hugely by the smirking frivolity of Roger Moore, and it was down to Sean Connery, returning to the role after 12 years, to balance the comic hysteria with action-man authenticity. Connery, ever-aware that he's at the centre of a big, expensive joke, still makes you believe that he's heroic to the core. His well-groomed presence holds the screen with ease and he's flanked here by three charismatic ne'er-do-wells, Klaus Maria Brandauer, Max von Sydow and Barbara Carrera. The plot, which owes much to Thunderball, lurches badly at times, but the wild action set pieces, decked out in gals (Kim Basinger among them), gadgets and glib lines, are there to be cherished. Listen out for Q's smart remark about gratuitous sex and violence.

In creating the characters Thelma and Louise for this hugely entertaining and controversial road movie, Oscar-winning scriptwriter Callie Khouri put women in the driving seat for the first time. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon star as the two friends whose weekend spree to escape the boredom of their small-town routines is curtailed when Louise (Sarandon) kills a man who's trying to rape Thelma (Davis). They flee, and thus begins their voyage of self-discovery. Ridley Scott's film sparked a row at the time over whether the sight of gals with guns was a symbol of liberated equality or depressing defeminisation. Whatever your viewpoint, films have a duty to provoke as well as entertain, and it's impossible to watch the plight of Thelma and Louise without feeling indignation.

This fast-paced thriller about two convicts whose bid for freedom becomes a desperate battle for survival aboard a runaway train is based on a screenplay co-written by celebrated Japanese director Akira Kurosawa. And that's what takes it a notch above the average Hollywood action film, as Jon Voight and Eric Roberts's prisoners have far more depth than your typical gung-ho heroes. Both landed Oscar nominations, as did Henry Richardson, whose dynamic editing gives Andrei Konchalovsky's superior direction the breakneck pace that will keep you on the edge of your seat. John P Ryan as a sadistic warden and Rebecca De Mornay as a trapped passenger also rise to the occasion.

John Carpenter's cult classic gets a contemporary reworking in this exciting action thriller. The English-language debut of director Jean-François Richet, it maintains the original's basic concept, but brings both protagonists and story into the 21st century. Focusing more on individuals and their relationships rather than pure action, this simple urban western is set in an isolated, sparsely manned Detroit police station under siege during its final night before closure. The aim of the relentless assailants is to retrieve laid-back crime lord Laurence Fishburne, which forces the prisoners and cops inside into an uneasy alliance to stay alive. Every frame of this film crackles with raw energy, as Richet cranks up the tension, economically exploiting sight, sound and extreme violence to gripping effect. The acting is enjoyable, too - despite some corny dialogue and clichéd characters - with Ethan Hawke's emotionally scarred police sergeant a particular standout.
