Producers always rush out sequels to sleepers (or surprise box-office hits), hoping to cash in while the audience is still in the right mood. Unfortunately, sleepers are by definition films no one initially had much confidence in, and film-makers often struggle to repeat the inexplicably successful formula. This is a case in point, as not even the usually reliable writing team of Lowell Ganz and Babaloo Mandel can give co-writer and star Billy Crystal the kind of verbal ammunition he thrives on. Jack Palance briefly reprises his Oscar-winning role, but a hit comedy needs more than cameos, cattle and scenery.

As this true-life New York crime saga (set between 1968 and 1974) evocatively unfolds, master director Ridley Scott makes "big" look easy. Denzel Washington brings a suave tranquillity to his role as emerging Harlem drugs lord Frank Lucas (all the better to explode into sudden violence), while, in parallel, Russell Crowe's honest New Jersey cop Richie Roberts juggles divorce, pariah status within a corrupt police department and, eventually, the logistics of bringing Lucas down. It's as if The Godfather, GoodFellas and Scarface met TV's The Wire: grand overstatement combined with procedural detail and junkie sleaze. Beyond Josh Brolin's poisonously bad cop, a fine supporting cast struggles to make any meaningful impact in the wake of a dominant Washington - not least in the poorly sketched female roles - and fidelity to events takes the dramatic sting out of an operatic climax. Nevertheless, this is still a classy crime fable that succeeds despite sidestepping the electric set pieces of such genre maestros as Martin Scorsese or Brian De Palma.

Zorro may wear a mask, but there's no disguising the fact that this is an absolutely splendid swashbuckler. Anthony Hopkins plays the original righter of wrongs, who hands over his rapier, and his mission, to the younger Antonio Banderas. Catherine Zeta-Jones, as the fiery heroine, proves she's a match for the men in the action sequences. Director Martin Campbell (following on from the success of blockbuster Bond movie GoldenEye) makes the most of the dramatic swordplay and paces the film perfectly to its explosive conclusion.

This is a suspenseful and - the faint-hearted take note - often disturbing re-creation of the crimes, capture and psychoanalysis of Albert DeSalvo (played here by Tony Curtis), who confessed to being the notorious Boston Strangler, the killer of 13 women in the early 1960s. Though doubt has since been cast on De Salvo's confession (he was never charged with the crimes due to lack of evidence, but was jailed for unrelated sex offences), this film is an authentic-feeling account. Director Richard Fleischer deftly captures the pensive atmosphere of a frightened city with a stark, documentary-style approach that makes good use of split-screen sequences. As an all-star line-up of lawmen tightens the net around the elusive maniac, Curtis proves beyond doubt he could act with a nuanced performance of considerable depth and power.

Director Walter Hill and comedy are always an uneasy combination, and this hackneyed, overlong tale glaringly proves the point. Add Richard Pryor in manic mode and you have a major disappointment that fell flat even when it was made. This was the seventh time the story had been filmed - man left millions in will but first has to spend large amount in 30 days - which should have sounded a note of caution all round, but didn't. In this atmospheric tour de force, Hammer horror and the fabulous logic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle prove the perfect match in what was the first Sherlock Holmes adventure after the Universal series featuring Basil Rathbone ended in 1946 with Dressed to Kill, and also the first in colour. Director Terence Fisher (who was behind the camera for Hammer's revival of classic Universal monsters such as Frankenstein, Dracula and the Mummy) weaves a darkly romantic gothic spell around the dreaded hound from hell that stalks the foggy moors on the lookout for members of the cursed Baskerville family. Peter Cushing gives one of his finest ever performances as the unflappable Baker Street sleuth, and he has fantastic support from André Morell and Christopher Lee, who's on top haunted form as Sir Henry.

Ghost director Jerry Zucker focuses on another doomed romance in this retelling of the spiciest of Arthurian myths. If Kevin Costner can play Robin Hood with an American accent, then what's to stop Richard Gere giving Lancelot a Philadelphia twang? Gere is suitably dashing as the most independent knight of the Round Table, while Julia Ormond is ravishing as the constantly imperilled Guinevere. Stealing every scene, however, is Sean Connery, who, as a legend in his own lifetime, has no difficulty conveying the regal bearing of the once and future king. It's very 1990s, yet curiously and unashamedly old-fashioned.

Dubbed by a voice cast to die for, this CGI tale follows a group of animals from around the world who are stranded in Africa by a slew of ecological disasters. A polar bear from the Arctic, two giant tortoises from the Galapagos islands, an Australian kangaroo - you get the picture - join forces with a meerkat and a vegetarian lion to battle humans for water. The environmental messages and cod philosophy - humans bad, animals good - may be rather too simplistic and confused for adults, but the slapstick, Looney Tunes-style fun may well keep small children amused. And the lively soundtrack certainly helps.

This live-action Disney treatment of the classic tale owes its reputation to just one thing: Robert Newton's performance as Long John Silver. Here is the original, larger-than-life portrayal of the leering pirate rogue by the extraordinary Newton whose body lurches drunkenly and whose piglet eyes have the twinkle of gin. Newton did not have to act this way; he was pickled much of the time and this dedication to naturalism caused him to return to the part in a television series and a sequel, Long John Silver (1955). Apart from some pretty camerawork by Freddie Young, the rest of the production isn't much to shout about, and as Jim Hawkins, Bobby Driscoll is the worst sort of precocious American child star who, in real life, was headed for a very un-Disney future of drug addiction, poverty and an early death.

This Australian family comedy, based on Dick King-Smith's book The Sheep-Pig, came out of nowhere to enchant millions around the world, converting many small children to vegetarianism in the process. The "babe" of the title is an orphaned piglet adopted by a family of Border collies who learns how to handle sheep under the patient training of soft-hearted farmer James Cromwell. The mixture of live action and animatronics brings the animals magically to life (the film won an Oscar for visual effects) and their voices are adeptly handled by Christine Cavanaugh (of Rugrats fame), Hugo Weaving and Miriam Margolyes. It's a delight from start to finish that will captivate children and melt the heart of even the grumpiest adult.

Purists will shudder at what Steven Spielberg has done to JM Barrie's classic tale here, but their protests are likely to be ignored by those children who prefer old-fashioned derring-do to be brightened up with some 1990s trimmings. In this take on Peter Pan, Robin Williams plays the grown-up Peter, a ruthless business pirate who has no time for his family and no memory of his magical past. That changes, however, when his children are kidnapped and he gets a visit from Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts). As good as Williams is, the film is stolen by an almost unrecognisable Dustin Hoffman, whose Hook is suitably pantomimic (he is said to have modelled his performance partly on the larger-than-life screen image of Terry-Thomas) yet oddly sympathetic, a villain lost without his nemesis. The scenes between him and Bob Hoskins as Smee are a delight and, although the sentimentality gets a little sticky at times, this remains rousing entertainment.

Rampaging movie mutants are, it seems, almost invariably the tragic residue of some megalomaniac's sinister, misfiring scheme. But in this expendable sci-fi horror, when a plane crashes on a remote Mexican island and the survivors are menaced by savage baboons, the banality of the revelation will dismay even those who have endured the formulaic set-up. Ron Perlman (Hellboy) is typically imposing as the brooding guide brought in to help, but the members of the supporting cast prove largely anonymous as they're picked off by primates that are obviously stunt performers in monkey suits.

Robert Hamer will always be remembered as the director of the classic Ealing comedy Kind Hearts and Coronets, but he also had an excellent eye for local detail. Here he cleverly captures the murky side of life in London's marshlands, but he's beaten from the start by the utterly predictable wrong-man story. This is really a quota-quickie plot with a bit of money thrown at it. John Mills is badly miscast as an old lag desperate to discover who framed him for murder, while detective John McCallum is clueless in every sense.

"Who knows what evil lurks in the hearts of men?". Alec Baldwin does, here playing both wealthy socialite Lamont Cranston and his mysterious alter ego, the Shadow, who uses psychic powers to render himself invisible at will. The famous 1930s pulp-fiction crime-fighter takes on a descendant of Genghis Khan who's out to conquer the world with a pre-Second World War nuclear device in Highlander director Russell Mulcahy's flight of comic-strip fantasy. It's stuffed with fun clichés of the genre, and the spectacle of the exquisite design easily matches the visual punch of the special effects. Unfortunately, the flashy production values rather overshadow the performances of Baldwin and the star-studded supporting cast, while the plot rarely grips.

Drew Barrymore does what she does best - cute, funny romance - in this simple teen comedy. She plays a bumbling young copy editor on the Chicago Sun-Times who tries out as a reporter when she's sent under cover to a high school to find out what students get up to nowadays. It gives her the chance to rewrite her own painful school memories - she was the class nerd - and get that first memorable kiss she never had. She also falls for English teacher Michael Vartan, which sets off a rather predictable chain of events. Yet, thanks to Barrymore's captivating performance, a fun turn from David Arquette (as her slightly odd older brother) and a minor role for Leelee Sobieski, this is enjoyable fare.

Clint Eastwood cruises through this coarse comedy as a travelling prizefighter whose best buddy is a beer-swilling, lowlife orangutan named Clyde. There are plenty of lively scenes to keep fans satisfied (with some bare-knuckle fight sequences that squeamish viewers may find disturbing), and Eastwood just about manages to avoid being made a monkey of by his scene-stealing co-star. But his romantic hankerings after country singer Sondra Locke don't add much to the brew. Hardly one of the films for which Eastwood would most like to be remembered, but it did such good box-office that he was tempted back into a feeble sequel, Any Which Way You Can.

This modest Christmas comedy became a phenomenal money-making machine, one of the highest grossing pictures of all time. Writer/producer John Hughes and director Chris Columbus tuned in to two key elements: the fantasy of Steven Spielberg's ET, with its children triumphing over adult adversity, and the perennial chase of Tom and Jerry cartoons. Thus Macaulay Culkin, then ten years old and already in his fifth picture, plays the youngster left stranded by his parents who fly to Paris for the holiday. He pigs out on junk food, watches videos and then copes heroically with two burglars (Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern), crying "Yes!" when he zaps them. Surprisingly violent in a cartoon-like way, it's a celebration of enterprise that captured the heart and wickedness of every child on the planet.

Clint Eastwood struts his stern stuff in this typically hard-nosed war epic, playing a grizzled gunnery sergeant training a batch of rookie soldiers. He's the main reason to watch this by-the-numbers drama, which recycles many vintage clichés of the genre, from the misfit recruit gaining dignity and the old, die-hard veteran versus the modern major, to the virgin platoon's first bitter taste of battle on the beaches of Grenada. Star Wars meets Ben-Hur in director Danny Cannon's imaginatively over-the-top science-fiction rendering of the celebrated 2000 AD comic-strip hero. In the future, the world has formed into densely populated Mega Cities with the Cursed Earth being the uninhabitable region lying between them. Law and order is maintained by a fleet of elite officers who are judge, jury and executioner rolled into one, and Judge Dredd (Sylvester Stallone) is the most prolific of the brigade. This is how fans like their Stallone served up best - without subtlety, monosyllabic, biceps bulging and in constant action. Diane Lane as Judge Hershey, the romantic judge with a conscience, has some excellent moments, and Armand Assante puts in a fine performance of manic evil as a villain with a secret. Cannon continually accents the spark and humour of the comic, while ensuring the visuals are always spectacular and epic. Frequently stunning and always exciting, Judge Dredd is an underrated fantasy gem, full of flash, plenty of bang and packing a considerable wallop.

Following an attack by pirates, Van Damme meets Lord Edgar Dobbs (Roger Moore), and ends up in the charge of a martial arts master. Soon Van Damme is entered into the "ultimate fighting match" with prize of a solid-gold dragon statue for the winner. Van Damme made a career starring in fighting tournament movies like this one, but this self-directed effort is remarkably better than his usual output.

City of God director Fernando Meirelles brings his distinctive visual style to this moving political thriller, based on the novel by John le Carré. Ralph Fiennes plays Justin Quayle, a Foreign Office diplomat in Kenya, whose activist wife Tessa (a compelling Rachel Weisz, winner of the film's only Oscar) is found murdered. The story is then played out in a series of flashbacks, as Justin - a normally passive man who puts more effort into nurturing his plants than his marriage - tries to understand his wife's motives and the events that led to her death. Justin's gardening works well as a powerful metaphor for the apathy of the rich West to the world's poor, as Meirelles examines life in some of Kenya's most impoverished communities. Drug company profiteering, conspiracy and murder are at the heart of this film, but it's also a touching love story that will break your heart.

The Muscles from Brussels encounters his younger self - and sports a silly hairdo - when he's sent back in time to catch a sinister senator (Ron Silver) who's trying to change the past for his own monetary ends. If you can follow the time-travel logic, which everyone seems to be making up as they go along, then this will make for dumb fun, with good old Jean-Claude causing as much futuristic Van Dammage as possible. However, most sci-fi fans will find it desperately outdated. Best exchange - Jean-Claude: "He read my mind." Jean-Claude's wife: "With your English, I'm not surprised.".
