Playing on our fears of "the other", director Robin Hardy's psychosexual horror, first released in 1973, has now attained classic status. Brilliantly scripted by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth) and impressively staged on location, the film stars Edward Woodward as the devoutly Christian policeman, Sergeant Howie, who travels to a remote Hebridean island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. As his efforts are ha mpered by the islanders' wall of silence, Howie's prudish disapproval of these neo-pagan worshippers turns to outrage - not least when he is "tempted" by the pub landlord's free-spirited daughter (Britt Ekland) and given an audience with the mysterious Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). The Wicker Man does have some stilted moments, but it still manages to pack a bizarre, disturbing punch. The shorter running time of this original theatrical version does impact on the narrative depth of the story. The 2001 director's cut (available on DVD) is much closer to Hardy's vision.

This better-than-average melodrama features one of the more disturbing tales in the true story TV-movie genre. Mel Harris gives a decent performance as a mother who decides to let her unruly daughter spend a night in jail after she commits a petty offence with her boyfriend. But jail turns out to be a brutal juvenile detention centre and there's no prospect of imminent release. The nightmare scenario is handled confidently by director Noel Nosseck, a TV-movie specialist best known for his ill-advised remake of the old Audrey Hepburn classic Roman Holiday.

Scott McGinnis and Jeff Osterhage try valiantly to drum up some knockabout bonhomie here as Wild West outlaws enrolled in a British fighter squadron during the First World War, but everything from the stereotypical characters to the risible banter is against them. Bearing in mind the technical expertise of director Zoran Perisic (who worked on the special effects for Superman) and experienced cinematographer David Watkin, this adventure should at least have looked good. However, the aerial action is so inept that it only emphasises the shortcomings of a buddy movie that compounds its crimes by wasting such a promising premise.

Cartoonist Ronald Searle's most famous creation - the chaotic girls' boarding school that gave rise to the series of hit films in the 1950s and 60s - makes a surprisingly successful comeback in this amusing revamp. Directors Oliver Parker and Barnaby Thompson have updated the school for modern audiences, blending the traditions of dorms and jolly hockey sticks with more contemporary youth culture. Talulah Riley heads the young cast as Annabelle, the new girl who overcomes introductory torment to lead the St Trinian's girls on a mission to save the establishment from closure. Rupert Everett plays both her father and, like Alastair Sim in the original movies, the dotty headmistress, Miss Fritton. Meanwhile Russell Brand takes on the George Cole role as Flash Harry and there's support from Colin Firth as the minister of education. The sketch-like comedy works better than the overall story, but it's still lively fun for teenagers.

Years after a weapon called the Y-Bomb has wiped out the world's male population, scientist Julie Bowen genetically engineers a (supposedly) violence-free man - but he's not exactly welcome in a land run by man-hating women. This made-for-TV effort has occasional fun with its outlandish premise, but by-and-large it's still far too glum for its own good. Most disappointingly, the movie fails to illustrate how an all-female population might change society, an idea that could have been interesting in the hands of more gifted film-makers.

The fourth, screen-telling of Rolf Boldrewood's popular tale about bushranger, Captain Starlight, is saved only by Peter Finch in the lead and the panoramic photography of Harry Waxman. Away from the savage beauty of the Australian wilderness, former documentary film-maker, Jack Lee, drains all the drama from the round of robberies, escapes and betrayals that engulf brothers, David McCallum and Ronald Lewis, when they join the bandits. Finch is not seen enough, leaving us stuck with the tensions within the gang and the stormy relationship between Lewis and the duplicitous Maureen Swanson. The 1985 version (starring Sam Neill) was scarcely better.

Based on the work of two sci-fi literary giants, Isaac Asimov and Robert Silverberg, this futuristic comedy drama could have become a poignant tale about what it means to be human. Unfortunately, Robin Williams plays for tears as Andrew, the android butler assembled to serve one family over four generations. Programmed to follow Asimov's three laws of robotics (a robot may not harm a human being and must obey his or her orders while protecting its own existence), Andrew is treated well by his owner (Sam Neill), but later has himself reconstructed as a human being for the sake of his true love (Embeth Davidtz). Directed by Chris Columbus from a Nicholas Kazan script, the film makes Andrew irritatingly cute (as does the star), undermining Asimov's original analogy with black outsiders. With marvellous effects and ideas scuppered by sentimentality, it's enough to make a mechanical man weep.

The first of a marvellous series of movies pairing star James Stewart and director Anthony Mann, this western doesn't really tell the tale of "the gun that won the West". Instead, it focuses on the legendary "one in a thousand" perfect Winchester, seen here as a prize in a Dodge City shooting contest where Will Geer, as Wyatt Earp, presides over sharpshooters Stewart and a brilliantly sneering Stephen McNally. This is a fine, mature work: adult, intelligent and moral, creating a laconic new persona for the admirable Stewart. The brilliant black-and-white camerawork is by Garbo's favourite, William Daniels, and Mann's use of transition (dissolves, fades to black) is exemplary. Also, watch out for a pre-stardom Rock Hudson as Young Bull, and an even younger Tony Curtis as a cavalry trooper.

Jean-Claude Van Damme and Kylie Minogue team up for a movie adaptation of the popular video game. If that unlikely pairing isn't enough to put you off, try the simple-minded plot, which concerns an Allied Nations assignment to overthrow General Bison (Raul Julia in his last role), the dictator of a mythical Asian territory. Despite some neat production design - the camouflage costumes are particularly natty - there's very little to get excited about in this laughably bad action adventure.

The secret of a good disaster movie is to ensure that the victims hardly have chance to draw breath after one crisis, before another follows hot on its heels. Few have subjected the victims to a more sensational "frying-pan-and-fire" scenario than this Rank adventure, in which a plane crash-lands on an island, only for the survivors to discover that it is the site for an imminent atomic test. Considering there is only one outcome, director Guy Green sustains the suspense remarkably well, helped in no small measure by a sound cast led by Richard Attenborough, Pier Angeli and Eddie Constantine.

This 1999 TV-movie take on Washington Irving's classic ghost story might be considered one of the most faithful adaptations, but it's also among the driest. Made the same year as Tim Burton's lavishly atmospheric version, the plodding period feature is dull and insubstantial in comparison. Brent Carver hams it up as New England schoolteacher Ichabod Crane whose rivalry for the affections of local girl Katrina Van Tassel leads him on the trail of the legendary Headless Horseman. Unfortunately, his bumbling eccentricity only exaggerates the film's overall tweeness, with stilted support and basic direction compounding the limp affair.

The title could well refer to the two stars, both, alas, well past their sell-by dates, in this undistinguished but nevertheless beautifully photographed (by veteran cameraman William Clothier) western. Toupeed, paunchy John Wayne plays a Union colonel on his way to Mexico who confronts mustachioed Rock Hudson - shades of McMillan and Wife - as a Confederate colonel, but the theme of post-Civil War reconciliation ensures that no sparks fly between the two leads. There's no real chemistry either, deepening the suspicion that Wayne and Hudson had little in common, either on or off screen. Director Andrew V McLaglen seems to have had problems locating the right tone for this tale, but US football fans might relish the casting of gridiron stars Roman Gabriel and Merlin Olsen, while lovers of the genre might recall the glory days of those members of John Ford's repertory company present here: Ben Johnson, Harry Carey Jr and John Agar.

Zorro may wear a mask, but there's no disguising the fact that this is an absolutely splendid swashbuckler. Anthony Hopkins plays the original righter of wrongs, who hands over his rapier, and his mission, to the younger Antonio Banderas. Catherine Zeta-Jones, as the fiery heroine, proves she's a match for the men in the action sequences. Director Martin Campbell (following on from the success of blockbuster Bond movie GoldenEye) makes the most of the dramatic swordplay and paces the film perfectly to its explosive conclusion.

Director Lasse Hallström followed up The Cider House Rules with this delightful romantic comedy drama, adapted from the novel by Joanne Harris. Set in the late 1950s, it stars Juliette Binoche as a rootless mother who appears overnight in a small French village and brazenly opens a chocolate shop - during Lent. Staunch Catholic mayor Alfred Molina disapproves of her lifestyle and fears the challenge to his authority, but Binoche's confections are soon raising spirits (and more), particularly among the local wives. The arrival of handsome river gypsy Johnny Depp further inflames passions. Hallström skilfully creates a sense of the stifling nature of provincial life, and of a deeper spiritual malaise for which the bewitching Binoche offers a panacea. Watching this is the cinematic equivalent of putting a piece of chocolate in your mouth - a truly delicious experience.

An ancient Amazonian beast is creeping around Chicago's Field Museum of natural history on the night of a charity benefit. Can feisty scientist Penelope Ann Miller and detective Tom Sizemore overcome their fears to battle the blood-lusting demon of superstition? Throw some Poseidon Adventure-style panic into the monster mix and the result is a spectacular creature feature that gives a glossy veneer to its time-worn clichés. Scattergun jolts keep the seasoned suspense simmering and Hyams's full-tilt approach to the grisly mayhem is spot on.

Simon Pegg and director Edgar Wright - the team behind zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead - return for this gleeful pastiche of American action movies. Pegg stars as an over-achieving London policeman transferred to a crime-free village where all is not as it seems. What begins as a very funny, very British murder mystery eventually mutates into an ironic action spectacular that blows up half of Gloucestershire (or rather, Wells pretending to be Gloucestershire). Armed with a Who's Who of home-grown acting talent and a surfeit of gags, Hot Fuzz also showcases the continuing comic partnership of Pegg and co-star Nick Frost. Their mismatched cops play out every buddy movie convention imaginable while discussing subjects as diverse as ice-cream "brain freeze" and the homoeroticism of action thriller Point Break. More smart than silly, this is self-confident comedy that's proud to be British.

Of course, Payne's henchmen have hitched a lift as well and when they duly free him, it's up to Snipes to save the day. Despite the hand-me-down plot and dialogue, director Kevin Hooks manages to wring the requisite suspense out of some expertly staged action set pieces. He is helped enormously by charismatic turns from Snipes and Payne, and a solid supporting cast that includes Tom Sizemore, Bruce Greenwood and a then little-known Elizabeth Hurley.

James Woods seemingly has a knack for spotting mediocre movies with roles that give him the chance to shine when his co-stars are floundering. This is a case in point, as he strides off with Luis Llosa's bomb thriller without even getting his hair mussed. Sylvester Stallone stars as an explosives expert and former colleague of Woods, who is hired by the mysterious Sharon Stone to avenge the death of her parents. There is, of course, more to her motives than is at first apparent. The stars apart, it's the robust playing of the supporting cast (which includes Rod Steiger and Eric Roberts as Miami mobsters) that really makes this worth watching. John Barry's lush score adds to the mix, too.

The quirky no-budget charm of El Mariachi may have gone, but director Robert Rodriguez here clearly revels in the chance to splash out with the backing of a studio to reimagine his modest debut feature effectively. Antonio Banderas assumes the mantle of the mysterious guitar-playing stranger who arrives south of the border seeking vengeance against an evil drugs baron, and keeps his tongue wedged firmly in cheek as he carries out his acrobatic slaughter of hordes of bad guys. Add to that a smouldering early appearance from Salma Hayek, sharp cameos from Quentin Tarantino and Steve Buscemi and a rootsy rocking soundtrack from Los Lobos, and you end up with joyfully mindless mayhem.

Director Sam Mendes here follows up his superlative Oscar winner American Beauty with another riveting, intelligent drama imbued with lyrical imagery. Based on a graphic novel set during the Depression era, it features Tom Hanks as a feared hitman working for Irish-American Mob boss Paul Newman, who regards him as a son. Professional and familial loyalties become blurred when Hanks's own family is targeted, forcing him to take to the road with his eldest son, as he embarks on a systematic course of revenge against his betrayers. Comparable to the Coen brothers' Miller's Crossing, this evocative gangster movie boasts superb photography, production design and score, which utterly transport the audience back to moody 1930s Chicago. Cast against type, Hanks - whose haunted eyes speak volumes - is a model of unruffled understatement, while an intimidating Newman radiates his usual strong presence. Jude Law's eccentric killer feels too much like a colourful movie creation, but is the only minor setback in a remarkable second feature from Mendes.
