This mesmerising adaptation of The Power and the Glory - Graham Greene's novel about a "whisky priest" - by director John Ford is seriously compromised by the censorship of the time. But, despite the fact that the central relationship is no longer a sexual one and Henry Fonda's priest is not an alcoholic, it remains resolutely convincing. Pedro Armendáriz is particularly fine as the mustachioed police lieutenant, and Dolores Del Rio smoulders as the woman, but the real star of this brooding opus is the magnificent outdoor photography from Gabriel Figueroa. At the time, Ford's non-westerns were regarded more highly than his westerns. This drama is a quasi-western, and all the better for being directed by such a master.

At this stage of his career, Jean-Claude Van Damme was having trouble convincing people that he was up to handling one role, so it was a tad ambitious for him to take on two in this otherwise straightforward action thriller. In a performance that adds new meaning to the term identical twins, Van Damme is equally wooden as the two brothers - one good, one a bit of a rogue - who are reunited to avenge the death of their parents. However, there's plenty of biffing, kicking and explosions for those who like that sort of thing, and reliable support from Geoffrey Lewis.

Not even Robert Carlyle's trademark pugnacity can enliven this well-intentioned but leaden adaptation of Ernest Gordon's memoir about the building of the Burma railroad. Even though it presents a considerably more accurate account than The Bridge on the River Kwai, unfavourable comparisons with David Lean's Oscar winner (and even Merry Christmas, Mr Lawrence) abound, as Allied soldiers Ciaran McMenamin, Robert Carlyle and Kiefer Sutherland are among the PoWs forced to lay the infamous track. Yugo Saso and Sakae Kimura's good guard/bad guard and the subplots involving Sutherland's illicit still and Mark Strong's bush university only reinforce the unfortunate aura of stereotype and cliché.

In this well-made re-enactment of one of the most significant conflicts of the war in the Pacific, John Wayne leads his marines to hell and back and they love him for it, every bloodsoaked, heroic foot of the way. It was made on the cheap, often shows its age and is particularly anti-Japanese in its sensibilities. But it's still eminently watchable - propaganda aside - and the Duke nabbed his first Oscar nomination to boot. Apparently, Kirk Douglas was in line for the role of Sergeant Stryker, but, according to the film's producer, Wayne wanted the role so badly "he could taste it." If you believe Wayne's son, though, the Duke worried about the script and only relented when war veterans lobbied him to play the part.

War may be hell if you're a grown-up, but it's a wheeze if you're nine years old and living in suburban London during the Blitz. Anyway, that's how it looks to the young hero of director John Boorman's whimsical, funny, nostalgic, semi-autobiographical memoir of family life in the Second World War. Sebastian Rice-Edwards gives an extraordinarily confident performance in the lead role, and he's matched by Geraldine Muir, playing his five-year-old sister. Sammi Davis as their rebellious elder sibling, meanwhile, gives a poignant portrayal of the teenager caught between sexual awakening and the savage truths of the day, especially in the scene when she informs her mother, Sarah Miles, of her intention to sleep with her Canadian soldier boyfriend. "We might all be dead tomorrow; just don't fall in love with him," sighs Miles. "Who said anything about love," snaps back Davis. The film is on the episodic side and Miles and Ian Bannen as the grandfather might both have toned down their eccentric portrayals a notch, but these are minor quibbles about a delightful movie. It was a personal triumph for Boorman: he received Oscar nominations for best film (as producer), best director and best original screenplay, while Philippe Rousselot's cinematography and Anthony Pratt and Joan Woollard's art direction/set decoration were also nominated.

This impeccable adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-winning novel stars Anthony Hopkins as the emotionally repressed butler and Emma Thompson as the housekeeper he possibly loves. Framed in flashbacks, the story is an English twist on Jean Renoir's classic La Règle du Jeu, a broad view of a narrow class of aristocrats on the verge of self-destruction. Co-starring James Fox as a fascistic English lord and Christopher Reeve as an American diplomat (the past and present owners of Darlington Hall), it is as much a study in power and politics as it is Hopkins's blinkered view of the world from behind the gleaming silver salvers. The 1930s and 40s settings are immaculately staged, and, unlike James Ivory's earlier dramatisations of EM Forster, this picture has real backbone: Ivory's direction is alive to every nuance and chink of the sherry glasses.

This laughably inept thriller finds mystery woman Angelina Jolie being shadowed through Paris and Venice by Scotland Yard's Paul Bettany in the hope that she will lead him to her on-the-run lover who has stolen millions from vicious gangster Steven Berkoff. To throw him off the trail, she draws oblivious holidaying maths teacher Johnny Depp into her web and soon both the cops and Berkoff's henchmen are in hot pursuit, believing him to be the fugitive thief. Quite how so much on- and off-screen talent can conspire to make such a mess of a movie is astonishing. Director Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (whose debut feature The Lives of Others won a best foreign film Oscar) quickly loses control of his convoluted and hackneyed narrative, and the writing credit he shares with British favourite Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park) and The Usual Suspects Oscar-winner Christopher McQuarrie suggests that the clunky dialogue and ridiculous plot twists are the result of three men working independently of each other. Depp's character is an uneasy blend of hammy matinée idol and Clouseau-like farceur, while Jolie is in the running for the most annoying and insipid ice maiden in cinema history.

The big question here is, what on earth were Diana Dors, Terence Morgan and George Baker doing in such a dreary little film? Director Gordon Parry was capable of making involving pictures, but here he insists on his cast delivering each line as if it had the dramatic weight of a Russian novel, which is more than a little preposterous for a petty melodrama about criminal brothers falling for the same girl. The intention was to cash in on the vogue for "it's grim up north" movies, but the result is a bumper collection of unintentional laughs.

... and another largely pointless reprise from the Hollywood mill. Although original stars Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte are reunited with director Walter Hill, all three seem to be going through the motions here. Nolte is the same rough and ready cop who is forced to team up again with con Murphy, this time in a bid to salvage his own career. Ironically, that seems to be the reason for this sequel in real life for Murphy; whereas in the original he was electrifying, here he verges on self-parody. The action is spectacular enough, though, and Hill makes sure he uses up his much bigger budget with increasingly ludicrous set pieces.

Director Sam Mendes here follows up his superlative Oscar winner American Beauty with another riveting, intelligent drama imbued with lyrical imagery. Based on a graphic novel set during the Depression era, it features Tom Hanks as a feared hitman working for Irish-American Mob boss Paul Newman, who regards him as a son. Professional and familial loyalties become blurred when Hanks's own family is targeted, forcing him to take to the road with his eldest son, as he embarks on a systematic course of revenge against his betrayers. Comparable to the Coen brothers' Miller's Crossing, this evocative gangster movie boasts superb photography, production design and score, which utterly transport the audience back to moody 1930s Chicago. Cast against type, Hanks - whose haunted eyes speak volumes - is a model of unruffled understatement, while an intimidating Newman radiates his usual strong presence. Jude Law's eccentric killer feels too much like a colourful movie creation, but is the only minor setback in a remarkable second feature from Mendes.
