Stanley Kubrick's penultimate film is a harrowing, foul-mouthed and violent Vietnam War drama. But, unlike the rainforest horrors of Apocalypse Now or Platoon, Kubrick's film begins with a long training camp sequence in America before moving to a bombed-out Vietnamese city. While its message is simple - innocent young Americans are taught to be machine-like killers - its technique is extraordinary. Because Kubrick refused to travel any distance, it was shot entirely in Britain, with palm trees uprooted from Spain and Matthew Modine and a cast of relative unknowns uprooted from Hollywood. Renting a disused gasworks in Beckton, east London, Kubrick created a huge and spectacular outdoor set, though some sequences, it must be said, lack tropical realism. The performances are superb, especially Lee Ermey as the drill sergeant with a colourful vocabulary, Vincent D'Onofrio as the pathetic Private Pyle and Modine as the cynical recruit called Joker.

Singer Beyoncé Knowles co-produces and stars in this completely witless, sub-Fatal Attraction psychological thriller. But as Sharon Charles, the wife of a high-flying executive, she spends much of the film in the background as husband Derek (Idris Elba) grapples with the increasingly blatant sexual advances of a barmy temp (played by an accidentally comic Ali Larter). As this one-dimensional drama unfolds, it becomes increasingly difficult to see what drew Knowles to the project in the first place. While the idea of the all-American blonde coveting the seemingly perfect life of the African-American diva provides an interesting twist, it's sadly drowned out by countless clichés, general hysteria and a ludicrous finale reminscent of The Jerry Springer Show. What remains a mystery is why Elba would agree to play such a wet character after giving such a riveting study of moral complexity as Stringer Bell in acclaimed TV cop series The Wire.

Humans are the hunted minority in a near-future world populated by vampires in this intriguingly weird sci-fi/horror hybrid from the Spierig brothers. Principled vampire scientist Ethan Hawke creates a synthetic plasma substitute to ensure mankind's survival, although his boss (Sam Neill) is making a fortune out of harvesting blood at inflated prices. A pointed allegory on corporate greed, this clever revitalisation of the genre shows that the co-writer/directors have coolly and confidently delivered on the raw talent displayed in their debut zombie feature Undead. With beautiful Blade Runner-style cityscapes, smartly conceived takes on the vampire mythos (sun-proofed cars and video mirrors), inventively engineered shocks and copious blood loss, this is an engagingly skilful blend of John Carpenter, Bram Stoker and Philip K Dick. Hawke is terrific - Before Sunrise now takes on a whole new meaning - while Willem Dafoe ramps up the fun factor as a Van Helsing-type with a big secret.

In creating the characters Thelma and Louise for this hugely entertaining and controversial road movie, Oscar-winning scriptwriter Callie Khouri put women in the driving seat for the first time. Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon star as the two friends whose weekend spree to escape the boredom of their small-town routines is curtailed when Louise (Sarandon) kills a man who's trying to rape Thelma (Davis). They flee, and thus begins their voyage of self-discovery. Ridley Scott's film sparked a row at the time over whether the sight of gals with guns was a symbol of liberated equality or depressing defeminisation. Whatever your viewpoint, films have a duty to provoke as well as entertain, and it's impossible to watch the plight of Thelma and Louise without feeling indignation.

The idea was recycled in 1998 by Disney, but this is the studio's popular original. Hayley Mills takes the dual role of twins trying to reunite their divorced parents, played by Maureen O'Hara and an undercast, and seemingly uncomfortable, Brian Keith. It's hard to watch now - particularly the scenes featuring the Sherman brothers' loathsome hit record Let's Get Together - and, like many Disney films of the period, it's ridiculously overlong, drawn out by the interminable section at a summer camp. But David Swift's direction is adroit - he also guided Mills through her Oscar-winning performance in the previous year's Pollyanna - and Lucien Ballard's Technicolor photography is particularly fetching. It's just hard to imagine who'd like this today.

It was in Malta, when shooting this picture, that Bryan Forbes coined his nickname for Richard Attenborough. "Bunter" he called him and "Bunter" he remained, owing to Attenborough's addiction to chocolate. Nowadays that little piece of trivia is of rather more significance than the movie, which is a juvenile comedy about an Italian baby smuggled aboard HMS Gillingham while the ship is docked in Naples. Joining Attenborough and Forbes in the cast are John Mills (of course) and Michael Hordern, who plays the captain. It's all too twee for words and the single joke is stretched almost beyond endurance.

It was dismissed by many critics as a noisy, scary and utterly worthless excuse for some ingenious computer effects, but as empty experiences go this fantasy adventure is absolutely exhilarating. Toddlers, as well as pre-teens, will be spellbound by the marauding wildlife that is unleashed when Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce rescue Robin Williams from the sinister board game in which he's been trapped for 26 years. Any film where the action is determined by a roll of the dice is bound to be episodic, but this hardly detracts from the enjoyment as one spectacular set piece follows another. The result is wonderful, escapist family entertainment.

Fans of the original 1960s TV series may well feel short-changed by this pedestrian live-action adventure from Star Trek: Insurrection director Jonathan Frakes. It's more an "inspired by" homage than a direct adaptation, with the Tracy family's core members disastrously sidelined to supporting roles. Instead the focus is on sulky adolescent Alan Tracy (Brady Corbet) who resents studying at boarding school while his dad (Bill Paxton) and brothers are saving the world. Cue a wannabe SPYkids plot in which Alan and his two cutesy pals are left to defeat the Hood (Ben Kingsley), after the villain lures the International Rescue team away on a fake mission and takes over Tracy Island. With the exception of the frothy kitsch of Sophia Myles's Lady Penelope and her multi-talented chauffeur, Parker (Ron Cook), there's just no substance or vitality to this obviously expensive production. The retro-futuristic design and scenery look great, as do the mighty Thunderbird machines, but style alone can't save a weak script or make flat dialogue sparkle.

Japan's favourite giant lizard crawls out of radioactive waters in the South Pacific and heads for New York in this dreary American overhaul from 10,000 BC director Roland Emmerich. Resembling an over-produced version of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Emmerich's blockbuster behemoth replaces man-in-suit special effects with dodgy computer visuals and sub-Jurassic Park thrills. What it doesn't replicate is the endearing charm the celebrated fire-breather had when he stomped through cardboard skyscrapers. The old Toho Studios' fantasy adventures may have lower budgets, but even the cheapest shows more imagination and flair than this dismal monster mishmash.

Based on the bestselling "novel in cartoons" by Jeff Kinney, this weak comedy focuses on misfit pre-teen Greg (Zachary Gordon) as he negotiates his first year at middle school - a world of cliques, bullying and embarrassment. Hatching various plots to boost his popularity with the older kids, Greg finds his efforts are constantly hampered by his cruel big brother Rodrick (Devon Bostick) and his nerdy best friend Rowley (Robert Capron). Director Thor Freudenthal punctuates the live action with animations based on Kinney's own work, but whereas Greg's adventures in book form are full of subtlety and wry observation, the movie is swamped by the sledgehammer clichés (gym class humiliation, Halloween high jinks) found in any run-of-the-mill children's TV comedy. None of the young actors has much in the way of screen presence, and it's left to Steve Zahn as Greg's hapless dad to grab the few real laughs on offer.

Gru adopts a trio of young sisters from the local orphanage to help him infiltrate Vector's lair and purloin his shrink-gun gizmo to accomplish his evil plan. But a growing bond with the orphans threatens to soften Gru's resolve. The ingenious gadgetry and retro-futurist design is reminiscent of Pixar's The Incredibles and, in common with several of that studio's films, Despicable Me also boasts a well-crafted sub-plot about the importance of family. The film is constantly laugh-out-loud funny, and the voice cast (which also includes Julie Andrews as Gru's disapproving mother) is exemplary. And prepare to fall head-over-heels in love with the impossibly cute "minions", Gru's diminutive yellow helpers.

With Michael Caine as Scrooge, Kermit and Miss Piggy as the Cratchits, and Gonzo as Dickens, this is quite simply corking Christmas entertainment. Although the story has been Muppetised (with Fozzie Bear as Fozziwig, the owner of a rubber-chicken factory), no attempt has been made to water down the story, and the poignancy of the moral tale is as affecting as ever. Caine hasn't been this good in years, and his scenes with those hecklers supreme Statler and Waldorf, as the Marley brothers, are the highlight of the film. Paul Williams's songs are a bit hit 'n' miss, but who cares when you're having such a good time?

This wonderfully inventive animated yarn tells the story of ruthless baddie Gru (voiced by Steve Carell), who finds his position as the world's greatest villain threatened by up-and-coming youngster Vector (Jason Segel). To re-establish himself as top dog, Gru and his boffin sidekick Dr Nefario (Russell Brand) hatch a plot to steal the moon.

Brian De Palma slums it with his first science-fiction melodrama, which comes loaded with sentiment, camp moments and risible dialogue. However, while there's nothing new in this Red Planet space opera (mostly lifted from 2001: a Space Odyssey and Close Encounters of the Third Kind) the Carrie director covers its drawbacks with pristine craftsmanship, trademark suspense sequences and a full quota of sharp computer visuals. The age-old question "Is there life on Mars?" is answered by Nasa astronauts Gary Sinise and Tim Robbins when they embark on a rescue mission to the planet and make an extraordinary discovery. It may be rather overcooked, but De Palma's outer-space adventure is still very watchable.

Richard Attenborough plays Kriss Kringle in this remake of the classic 1947 fantasy. In the original, Edmund Gwenn gave an Oscar-winning peformance as the elderly gent whose behaviour while working as a department-store Santa suggests that he believes he really is Father Christmas. Here Attenborough positively twinkles in the role in an attempt to convince moppet Mara Wilson, and the audience, that he is a living legend. Although the film as a whole is a much more glamorous affair, and Wilson and Elizabeth Perkins as her mother are undoubtedly charming, it does lack some of the magic of the original.

This time the self-styled ghost busters - Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis and Ernie Hudson - are called back into service when evil emanating from a painting Sigourney Weaver's boss Peter MacNicol has been restoring awakens spirits around New York. The effects are bigger and more spectacular, Murray once again shines as the shyster scientist and there is an expanded role for Rick Moranis. Jennifer Love Hewitt's inept CIA agent provides the best comedy moments in the film, otherwise it's just a bunch of special effects, liberally poured on by director Kevin Donovan, that obscure Chan's true gifts - after all, the man practically is a special effect. Robert Redford is in reformist mode here as a progressive warden, determined to oust brutality and corruption from a state prison farm. Director Stuart Rosenberg (Cool Hand Luke) piles on the agony with sequences of bleak action, while the acting - especially from Jane Alexander and Yaphet Kotto - is formidable enough to take on all that social responsibility. It's a touch downbeat, and at times ponderous and sanctimonious, but this prison drama still sounds a shrill warning and sends out an ominous message to those who care about what society does with its misfits. Watch out, too, for an early pre-stardom appearance by Morgan Freeman as a fearsome inmate.

Trash antihero icon Jason Statham (The Transporter) plays a retired hitman injected with poison. If his adrenaline level falls he'll die - something that must not happen until he's slain the LA crime syndicate boss responsible. To keep his heart rate up he ingests every drug going and, in a hilarious highlight, has public sex in Chinatown with girlfriend Amy Smart. It's Speed with a man instead of a bus, and nothing is sacred or even realistic - from Statham performing motorcycle stunts almost naked to calmly using his mobile while freefalling through the air. Slumdog Millionaire director Danny Boyle's first foray into pure science fiction starts out as a philosophical epic along the lines of 2001: a Space Odyssey and Solaris before lurching inexplicably into the action horror territory previously charted by Alien and Event Horizon. Set in 2057, the film boasts crisp performances from Cillian Murphy, Chris Evans and Rose Byrne as the astronauts who are sent on a hazardous mission to rekindle the dying Sun by firing a giant bomb into its core. Throwing in nods to genre classics Silent Running and Dark Star, Boyle succeeds admirably in cranking up the tension as things go awry and the crew are subjected to unexplained and unnerving phenomena. But, despite a strong first half, the film loses its way as the spaceship nears its fiery destination and the admittedly stunning special effects begin to overwhelm an action-packed but disappointing final act.

This remake from Behind Enemy Lines director John Moore adds little to Robert Aldrich's 1965 original, save for some superior special effects, but it's a decent enough adventure yarn for those who haven't seen the first film. The plot remains much the same: the survivors of a plane crash in the desert (here the Gobi; it was the Sahara in the original) seek to escape by building a second craft from the wreckage of the first. Dennis Quaid assumes the role of the pilot originally played by James Stewart, while Giovanni Ribisi steps into Hardy Kruger's shoes to play the aircraft designer who conceives the idea of a new plane to rise phoenix-like from the ashes of the old. The production values are good - the opening crash is especially well staged - and the tension builds nicely. Overall, it's a decent retread, though perhaps not a particularly necessary one.
