Steven Seagal releases movies like a B-52 drops its payload. This entry in his nonstop carpet-bombing campaign (twelve movies in four years) sees him playing a washed-up, alcoholic ex-cop with gambling debts and a young daughter who he ought to be taking better care of. Instead of joining AA meetings, though, his 12-step programme involves being dispatched by Lance Henriksen's shadowy government operative to wipe out various bad guys. Half-baked character development scenes see Seagal staring into glasses of whisky and furrowing his brow, while the action proves just as leaden. Kept largely immobile by his paunch, Seagal takes out bad guys with nothing more than his arms and a scowl - even killing a table of diners from a seated position using the silverware. The final shoot-out is set in a graveyard, which is fitting since Seagal appears to be writing the epitaph to his career.

Director Sam Mendes here follows up his superlative Oscar winner American Beauty with another riveting, intelligent drama imbued with lyrical imagery. Based on a graphic novel set during the Depression era, it features Tom Hanks as a feared hitman working for Irish-American Mob boss Paul Newman, who regards him as a son. Professional and familial loyalties become blurred when Hanks's own family is targeted, forcing him to take to the road with his eldest son, as he embarks on a systematic course of revenge against his betrayers. Comparable to the Coen brothers' Miller's Crossing, this evocative gangster movie boasts superb photography, production design and score, which utterly transport the audience back to moody 1930s Chicago. Cast against type, Hanks - whose haunted eyes speak volumes - is a model of unruffled understatement, while an intimidating Newman radiates his usual strong presence. Jude Law's eccentric killer feels too much like a colourful movie creation, but is the only minor setback in a remarkable second feature from Mendes.

A perfect small-scale western. Randolph Scott plays the very ordinary cowpoke who stumbles into the hands of kidnappers, carefully biding his time to turn the tables and free their captive, the rich man's wife played by Maureen O'Sullivan. The outlaws are finely etched in Burt Kennedy's screenplay (from an Elmore Leonard story) as both ruthless and human, and skilfully portrayed by Henry Silva, Skip Homeier and, especially, Richard Boone as their leader, a lonely, intelligent figure who cannot escape his nature. It is superbly filmed, almost entirely outdoors, by director Budd Boetticher, and the vivid, desolate landscape greatly enhances the drama.

Sadly underrated on its original release, this final film in the series of Ranown westerns from director Budd Boetticher and co-producer/star Randolph Scott is a fine meditation on ageing. It's a companion piece thematically to The Searchers with Scott rescuing a rancher's wife who has been kidnapped by Comanches. But this is arguably bleaker and more realistic than John Ford's film, and strips the genre to its bare essentials. Supporting the craggy Scott is the well-cast Claude Akins as a flamboyant bounty hunter, and their final confrontation is especially effective. Particularly notable is Burt Kennedy's screenplay, which utilises the western's emotive iconography brilliantly: the Scott character is called Cody, while the journey is to Lordsburg - also the destination of the travellers in Stagecoach.

TV-movie veteran Donna Mills aims for a slightly more risqué role here, although she still can't help looking as squeaky clean as ever. In this soufflé-light caper thriller she plays a beautiful con artist who runs into trouble when she sets up her latest scam in a smart financial investment company. There's a good supporting cast (Peter Riegert, Cliff De Young) and the direction from Larry Peerce, perhaps best known for the ill-fated John Belushi biopic Wired, is competent enough.

Alfred Hitchcock once told François Truffaut that his 1934 version of this exciting thriller - about a family innocently involved in an assassination plot - was "the work of a talented amateur and the second was made by a professional". There's no doubt that this colour remake is technically more accomplished, while the deft tinkering with the finale adds considerably to the suspense. But not all of the additional 45 minutes are as well spent. Que Sera, Sera might have won the Oscar for best song, but its inclusion was solely to mollify Doris Day fans and the storytelling is occasionally over-deliberate. Nevertheless, James Stewart is superb, and Bernard Miles and Brenda de Banzie make admirable adversaries.

This pleasant little crime drama - not quite a thriller and a shade too bright for a film noir - is directed with consummate skill by up-and-coming Edward Dmytryk, who had also worked with former crooner Dick Powell in their masterpiece Farewell My Lovely in the same year. Powell here continues to erase memories of his Busby Berkeley days at Warners, delivering a high-octane performance as he hunts down his wife's murderer in a Buenos Aires peopled with veteran character actors such as Walter Slezak and Morris Carnovsky. Unfortunately, the women (Micheline Cheirel, Nina Vale) are a shade uninteresting, but Powell's tough demeanour more than compensates.

This lightweight but amiably daft science-fiction comedy was pitched as Ghost Busters (an earlier Ivan Reitman smash) meets Men in Black. Though it shares those films' laid-back performances, tongue-in-cheek approach and cute special-effects creations, it lacks some of their wit and sparkle. Fortunately, David Duchovny and Orlando Jones (as college professors), Seann William Scott (as an aspiring fireman) and Julianne Moore (as a government scientist) lay on the comic charm, and the loose Darwinian concept allows for an entertainingly mad menagerie of regenerated digital creatures. However, it says a lot about the evolution of sci-fi cinema since the 1950s that Reitman's return to the genre is so reliant on computer-generated visuals and obvious scatological humour.

Given that plot is never a key element of Jackie Chan's oeuvre, it's no surprise that only two elements really matter: the chemistry between the two inevitable buddies/partners and the quality of the action. Sadly, both are well below par in this Dublin-set farrago. Chan stars as cop Eddie Yang, whose search for evil crime lord Snakehead (Julian Sands) leads to the discovery of an ancient medallion and a kidnapped boy, who does little but sit unnaturally still and look inscrutable. Inexplicably semi-dubbed and looking like it was edited on a bacon slicer, this barely releasable mess couldn't possibly get any worse until Lee Evans deftly applies the tin lid with an excruciatingly irritating performance. Even Chan's undoubted screen charm can't rescue this inept mess.

This western is notable only for a performance of immense dignity from the great Burt Lancaster as a Mexican-American lawman bent on justice. An unlikely debut for Broadway theatre director Edwin Sherin, who fails to get the most out of the material and quite clearly has no cinema technique. Additionally, the film is crucially under-cast, with a far stronger screen presence than Jon Cypher required as Lancaster's adversary. Only Richard Jordan manages to register among the supports. Shot in Spain, this is a film from a period in Lancaster's career when he simply seemed glad to be working.

John Carpenter's 1980 ghost yarn The Fog wasn't one of his best, but it scarcely deserved the indignity of this inept remake by Stigmata director Rupert Wainwright. The story remains much the same, as the seaside community of Antonio Bay is terrorised by vengeful spooks who emerge from a haunted pea-souper. Leading the insipid, less-than-enthusiastic cast are Smallville's Tom Welling, Lost's Maggie Grace and Selma Blair, who attempt to unravel the mystery of the marine invaders. The original film was a reasonably tightly wrought tale, relying on the ratcheting up of tension for its pleasingly hokey thrills. But Wainwright jettisons atmosphere in favour of a cacophonous soundtrack and ineptly timed "shocks", while Carpenter's ghostly shapes in the mist give way to naff-looking zombies.

Three years after those infamous shark attacks, another great white swims into police chief Roy Scheider's resort town in this shameless sequel that's a pale imitation of the classic original. Director Jeannot Szwarc tries to ape Steven Spielberg's imaginative style, but the suspense comes unglued because the film floats in all-too-familiar waters. You just know how everyone is going to react - from the stars to the director, and even the mechanical shark. Stalwart Scheider is in full control of this blasé follow-up that makes one wonder why mayor Murray Hamilton hasn't learnt any lessons from previous events.

The title of James Gray's murky thriller was a motto used by the New York police in the 1980s. In this film's ambiguous moral world, though, it's uncertain who the night really belongs to. Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix) is the manager of a Brooklyn nightclub owned by a Russian family with criminal connections. His bosses are unaware that Bobby's father (Robert Duvall) and brother (Mark Wahlberg) are cops leading the operation against a drug dealer operating out of the club. But it's not long before Bobby is forced to abandon his neutral stance and become a reluctant informant - a decision that also rebounds on his girlfriend Amada (Eva Mendes). Phoenix in particular excels, teasing out the muted tragedy of a man who's forced to choose sides. While Gray's touch is sometimes clumsy, he pulls off at least one coup: a car chase in a rain storm, the action viewed between the swish of windscreen wiper blades. Like the director's earlier work, The Yards and Little Odessa, this ambitious thriller largely avoids the expected clichés and concentrates instead on the price of familial loyalties.
