Action star Steven Seagal has always brought a vaguely liberal slant to his no-brain thrillers and his directorial debut is admirably politically correct. It's just a shame that the caring, sharing eco-friendly message tends to overpower what Seagal does best - kicking the stuffing out of bad guys. Here he's a troubleshooter who goes into battle with oil tycoon Michael Caine - hammily over the top and with a scary hairdo to boot - who's about to pollute virtually all of Alaska. Seagal the director shows that he has picked up the odd trick or two from the action specialists who made his name, but his impassioned green speeches will have viewers reaching for the remote control.

The English language - and dialogue in particular - is a tricky blighter for action stars such as Jean-Claude Van Damme and Arnold Schwarzenegger, and it also proves a problem for the heavily accented Dolph Lundgren in this awful action adventure. The makers played safe and cast the non-syllabic one as a Soviet agent, who is sent to a warring African state to take out a resistance leader. However, because Lundgren is the good guy, he has a change of heart and converts to the forces of freedom. Inexplicably, this was a big hit on video, perhaps because there's loads of mindless mass destruction, but the script and the performances make Rambo look positively Wildean.

Many viewers will identify with the plight of Cary Grant and Myrna Loy in this sublime comedy. As the married couple who move to the countryside and do, quite literally, what the title states, Grant and Loy get conned by every cowboy builder along the way. The film was remade in 1985 as The Money Pit, but it wasn't as funny or stylish as this original, as neither Tom Hanks nor Shelley Long could compete with Grant and Loy at their best - just watch Loy recite her proposed colour scheme and you'll appreciate the gulf between this wonderful movie and its inferior update.

In this predictable but highly watchable crime drama, CSI: Miami's Eva La Rue delivers a sympathetic performance as a cop trying to solve the grisly killing of her heavily pregnant sister. Yet while the investigative puzzle fits together far too easily, it's still surprisingly compelling waiting for the obvious culprit to get caught. Part of this is down to the disturbing nature of the murder and its twisted aftermath, which collectively give the film a harder and more emotive edge than your usual made-for-TV fare. A sprightly pace and a suitably unhinged turn from Gina Chiarelli add further interest to the join-the-dots plotline, leading to a tense though implausible climax.

One of those heart-tuggers so beloved of American TV movie-makers and, yes, it's based on a true story. Marg Helgenberger stars as the unfortunate woman who is not only falsely imprisoned, but discovers on her release that her three children have disappeared into foster care, thus sparking an epic search to recover them. Helgenberger milks the role for all it is worth, and a little bit more, and there's a sympathetic supporting turn from Corbin Bernsen.

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

This popular but overlong vehicle for Julie Andrews succeeds despite a confusing plot and a screenplay that's full of excess. There's much to enjoy, not least the bizarre appearances by Broadway divas Beatrice Lillie and Carol Channing, of whom a little goes an awfully long way. The real delight is co-star James Fox, dancing and romancing as if to the musical born, plus the utterly delectable Mary Tyler Moore, whose natural good-naturedness proves a fine counterpoint to Andrews's studied brittleness. Director George Roy Hill lacks both the lightness of touch and the surety of style that this movie desperately needs, and although the production values are sumptuous, Millie stubbornly refuses to become Thoroughly Modern, and now looks sadly dated. It's best dipped into rather than fully endured.

Nora Ephron, the writer of When Harry Met Sally..., comes up trumps again as co-writer and director of this gloriously old-fashioned and unashamedly manipulative romantic comedy. Tom Hanks, recently widowed, moves to a new home in Seattle where he just grieves and grieves. His young son, concerned over his dad's state of mind, calls a radio phone-in and when Hanks himself goes on air, he pours his heart out. That's storyline one. Storyline two features Meg Ryan, a Baltimore journalist who hears the broadcast, recognises a kindred lonely heart and starts tracking Hanks down. Hanks's son, played by Ross Malinger, becomes their matchmaker, while the Cary Grant/Deborah Kerr weepie of 1957, An Affair to Remember, is always on TV and serves as a touchstone, providing the inspiration for the movie's climax at the top of the Empire State Building. For nearly two hours, Ephron keeps her marvellous stars apart, a potentially dangerous tactic that works superbly. In the summer of Jurassic Park, Sleepless in Seattle proved to be a box-office smash; the team subsequently reunited for You've Got Mail in 1998.

Brian De Palma slums it with his first science-fiction melodrama, which comes loaded with sentiment, camp moments and risible dialogue. However, while there's nothing new in this Red Planet space opera (mostly lifted from 2001: a Space Odyssey and Close Encounters of the Third Kind) the Carrie director covers its drawbacks with pristine craftsmanship, trademark suspense sequences and a full quota of sharp computer visuals. The age-old question "Is there life on Mars?" is answered by Nasa astronauts Gary Sinise and Tim Robbins when they embark on a rescue mission to the planet and make an extraordinary discovery. It may be rather overcooked, but De Palma's outer-space adventure is still very watchable.

John Ford won his fourth best director Oscar for this immensely popular chunk of old blarney (why did he never win for his westerns?). John Wayne is, of course, splendid as the boxer looking for some peace by returning to his Irish roots, with fiery Maureen O'Hara more than a match for him - fans may remember Steven Spielberg's affectionate and memorable homage to this iconic pairing in a scene from ET. There's fantastic support from Barry Fitzgerald as a mischievous matchmaker who never says no to a drink and Victor McLaglen as O'Hara's blustering and bullying brother who takes an instant dislike to Wayne. Victor Young's lilting score is also very enjoyable, while Winton C Hoch and Archie Stout's Technicolor photography deservedly won the film a second Oscar. Though the picture-book view of Ireland may seem rose-tinted and dated now, if you're in the right mood, this is still a movie that can make you laugh and cry.

Japan's favourite giant lizard crawls out of radioactive waters in the South Pacific and heads for New York in this dreary American overhaul from 10,000 BC director Roland Emmerich. Resembling an over-produced version of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Emmerich's blockbuster behemoth replaces man-in-suit special effects with dodgy computer visuals and sub-Jurassic Park thrills. What it doesn't replicate is the endearing charm the celebrated fire-breather had when he stomped through cardboard skyscrapers. The old Toho Studios' fantasy adventures may have lower budgets, but even the cheapest shows more imagination and flair than this dismal monster mishmash.

Life on the home front is given a distinctly rosy glow in this naffly nostalgic adaptation of Angela Huth's novel. Anna Friel's randy northerner, Rachel Weisz's sheltered blue-stocking and Catherine McCormack's bourgeois prude are surely the most stereotypical volunteers in the history of the Women's Land Army. Consequently, from the moment these urban interlopers arrive at Tom Georgeson's Dorset farm, there isn't a single scene that ends unexpectedly. The performances are earnest and the scenery is beautiful, but as the clichés clunk into place with deadening predictability there's no sense of either dramatic or social conflict, let alone insight into the Land Girls' contribution to the war effort.

Hong Kong action superstar Jackie Chan teams up with loudmouth American comedian Chris Tucker for this blockbuster thriller that's essentially an east-meets-west buddy movie about two cops trying to deal with an international kidnapping. Director Brett Ratner allows plenty of time for character development between the spectacular set pieces, and Chan and Tucker's inspired double act elevates it above the norm. Equally adept at comic martial arts, Chaplin-esque gymnastic displays and near-superhuman stunts, Chan has never been more engaging, and Tucker's character is a likeably cocky foil, complete with machine-gun patter. Memorable moments include the pair singing a unique rendition of Edwin Starr's War and rolling over each other's backs to biff the villains.

This cosy comedy sees five friends reunited at the funeral of their childhood basketball coach, who led them to victory as schoolboys. They then spend the Fourth of July holiday at a lake house with their families - it's the first time they've all got together in 30 years, and while some things are very different, others haven't changed at all. The local tough boys are now local tough men and threaten a not-so-friendly basketball rematch. Meanwhile, Hollywood agent Adam Sandler and his friends Chris Rock, Rob Schneider, David Spade and Kevin James are all in varying degrees of midlife crisis. Their spoiled children and glamorous if neurotic wives (Salma Hayek and Maria Bello) contrast with 76-year-old Joyce Van Patten who, as the partner of new-agey Schneider, represents a kooky but genuine kind of love. Director Dennis Dugan keeps the pace snappy, but with a large cast and copious ad-libbing from the leads (whose off-screen friendships date back over 20 years), the impressive abilities of this ensemble go underused in a clichéd comedy that stalls at nice and stupid on its way to profundity.

A key film in Jean-Claude Van Damme's career, this is the one that first gave an indication that the Muscles from Brussels could escape from straight-to-video hell and into the mainstream. Plot-wise, this is nothing special: Van Damme is the brother of an injured kickboxing champion, who enters the ring seeking revenge. However, the fight sequences are staged with such élan that it is easy to ignore the hackneyed script - Van Damme had a hand in that as well - and rather wooden performances. After this, our hero moved on to bigger and better action vehicles, but the franchise continued without him, spawning several sequels.
