This sci-fi potboiler from director Roland Emmerich is a by-the-numbers affair, with dialogue you'd swear appears in comic balloons. But as no one takes the ultimate warrior premise seriously, either behind or in front of the camera, the unpretentious pandering to the action-plus brigade is a likeable strength, not a jarring weakness. The Muscles from Brussels (Jean-Claude Van Damme) has the edge over the Swedish Meatball (Dolph Lundgren) in every respect, from his showcase kick boxing to his send-up nude scene, in an OTT jeopardy jackpot where what you see is exactly what you get.

In this classic western, Henry Fonda's Wyatt Earp and Victor Mature's Doc Holliday are heading for that close shave at the OK Corral. Owing rather less to historical accuracy than more recent movies - Tombstone and Kevin Costner's Wyatt Earp - this John Ford picture boasts some fine sequences. The best is a dance in an unfinished church, a fine symbol of the "garden being fashioned from the wilderness" by the strong-arm methods of Fonda's self-righteous lawman. Filmed in expressive black and white against Monument Valley locations, the picture combines both the grandeur and the folksiness so typical of its director.

Big John Wayne finally won peer group recognition, taking the best actor Oscar for his performance in this western as Reuben J "Rooster" Cogburn, a cantankerous, one-eyed, drunken old reprobate hired by Mattie Ross (the excellent Kim Darby) to avenge her father's death at the hands of thoroughly nasty Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey). This movie has acquired a reputation for being a rollicking fun western, but actually it is surprisingly violent for a Wayne film (a pit of rattlesnakes, Dennis Hopper's fingers being severed), and, with its finely hewn, semi-Biblical dialogue (by Marguerite Roberts from Charles Portis's marvellous novel), it's not - unlike Wayne's earlier westerns - really suitable for family viewing, despite its strong moral theme. Glen Campbell is ineffective as Texas Ranger La Boeuf - a role first offered to Elvis Presley, to whom Wayne wouldn't take second billing - but it doesn't really matter. It's still a beautifully photographed film of many memorable moments, not least of which is Cogburn's final shoot-out with the bad guys in a Colorado clearing.

Former musical star Van Johnson stars in this cracking London-set thriller, playing a blind playwright who overhears a kidnap plot. Londoners will enjoy seeing director Henry Hathaway's skewwhiff city geography, and there's a fair amount of traditional fog, too. But, despite the clichés, the suspense is kept taut, the English support cast is faultless and American import Vera Miles is notably sympathetic. This film was one of a series of 20th Century-Fox British-set movies made in the 1950s, which also included hits such as The Man Who Never Was and Sink the Bismarck!

But, just as she seems ready to say yes to former high-school hunk Bruce Thomas, she meets Patrick Muldoon, an attorney whose well-intentioned deception threatens to ruin Santa's carefully laid plans. Brightly played and breezily directed by Kevin Connor, this is a pleasant way to pass the time.

Would you believe a loose adaptation of Jane Austen's Emma plonked down squarely in Beverly Hills 90210? Well, that's the setting for this screamingly funny satire-cum-put-on, which perfectly captures the inanities of contemporary teen America. Alicia Silverstone is a delight as Cher, the chic but dippy blonde who's devoted to improving the love lives of her Rodeo Drive-shopping high-school girlfriends, even though she can't sort out her own. Together with her best friend Dionne (Stacey Dash), Cher indulges in the trials and tribulations of designer-label animosity and MTV promiscuity, while her lawyer father (Dan Hedaya) and intellectual stepbrother (Paul Rudd) look on in total bemusement. Like Heathers before it, director Amy Heckerling's smart satire sharpens its comedic scalpel on the manners and mores of self-centred fashion victims. A quick note about the Clueless lingo: "majorly" means very, "do-able" means sexually attractive, a "hottie" is a do-able babe and a "Baldwin" is a gorgeous hunk. While mainly aimed at teens, like all fine comedies it will appeal to anyone with a wicked sense of humour and taste for the ironic. It's also one of those rare comedies which remains funny even when not delivering great one-liners. Examples? "What did you do in school today?" "Oh, I broke in my purple clogs"; "What's the point of learning to park when every place you go to has a valet?"; "My plastic surgeon doesn't want me doing any activity where balls fly at my nose." You'll have to watch the movie to hear the hilariously vulgar riposte to the latter.

... and another largely pointless reprise from the Hollywood mill. Although original stars Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte are reunited with director Walter Hill, all three seem to be going through the motions here. Nolte is the same rough and ready cop who is forced to team up again with con Murphy, this time in a bid to salvage his own career. Ironically, that seems to be the reason for this sequel in real life for Murphy; whereas in the original he was electrifying, here he verges on self-parody. The action is spectacular enough, though, and Hill makes sure he uses up his much bigger budget with increasingly ludicrous set pieces.
