Robert De Niro played this action picture for laughs and, as a result, had his first hit in years. Made by Martin Brest, director of the original Beverly Hills Cop, it's a variant on the odd-couple theme, as De Niro's bounty hunter goes on the run with an accountant who has embezzled $15 million from the Mob. The accountant is Charles Grodin, whose underplaying is an absolute joy: he looks like a puppy that's lost its poop tray. As with all the best road movies - and this is one of the best - the picture really moves, as a simple air trip from New York to LA turns into a saga of trains and automobiles, car crashes, and skirmishes with the FBI and a dozen other interested parties.

A terrifying tale of sluts and bolts! Cult director Frank Henenlotter (of Basket Case notoriety) sewed together one of his best lampoons with this madcap gore parody revealing his usual bad taste and warped sense of humour. Mad inventor James Lorinz accidentally chops up his girlfriend in a power lawnmower accident, saves her head and finds body parts to remake her from prostitutes addicted to the supercrack drug he's developed. Although paying nifty homage to the bizarre sexy shockers of Spanish director Jesus Franco, and deliberately pushing cartoon violence to the limit, Henenlotter's trump card is Lorinz, who turns in a charismatic central performance laden with wit and pathos.

"Don't call me babe!" scowls Pamela Anderson Lee, as she roves around Steel Harbor zapping agents of the Congressional Directorate. OK, providing you don't ask us to call this insulting reworking of Casablanca a film. Betraying his pop-video background with just about every shot, director David Hogan clearly isn't interested in storytelling, which is just as well as he doesn't have much of a tale to tell. Even amid the devastation of a second American Civil War, surely more will stand between the people and tyranny than magical contact lenses? Despite being treated like a computer generated cartoon, Pam takes it all in surprisingly good part.

In this routine crime tale, Jeepers Creepers star Gina Philips plays an unmarried career woman who suffers escalating torment when she gives birth to an apparently stillborn baby. Suspected of infanticide, she teams up with the child's father (Warren Christie) to clear her name. But their resulting amateur detective work comes together far too easily, making the film feel rushed and contrived. Most damaging, however, is the lack of dramatic intensity, as pedestrian direction and unconvincing performances - especially from Philips - dilute the in-built poignancy of the "parents' worst nightmare" scenario. Against-the-clock tension in the last third keeps things watchable, though even that could have been done better.

Nickelodeon's decision to combine Rugrats and The Wild Thornberrys on screen probably looked like financial genius on paper. After all, both franchises have enjoyed success in feature-length form, and the similarities between their larger-than-life characters will also be blatantly obvious to regular viewers. To some extent, the pairing proves a justified success - the cartoon romp is a fast-moving carnival of primary colours, in which the vacationing Rugrats are stranded on an apparently deserted island, unaware that the Thornberry clan are shooting a nature documentary there. Such an exotic setting initially works well, as the babies toddle through richly created rainforests teeming with beautifully animated wildlife. Unfortunately, the absence of a strong plot weakens the visual confection, exposing the film's lame humour and nauseating songs. Even guest voice talent Bruce Willis and Chrissie Hynde lack the necessary panache, while the interactive "odorama" gimmick becomes exhausted almost immediately.

While Jackie Collins's Hollywood Wives was a raunchy novel about the behind-the-scenes lives of actors, this is a less explicit tale along the same lines, which boasts its fair share of the scandals, love affairs and skeletons-in-the-closet suffered by Tinseltown's rich and famous. Christopher Plummer is the TV producer of the series Manhattan who experiences a few steamy moments of his own, while the cast of his show including Stephanie Beacham as the star, Linda Purl as the daytime soap queen and Ben Browder as the hot new hunk spends more time jumping in and out of bed than it does filming the series. Silly, over-the-top, and, if you watch for too long, scarily addictive.

In this lovely comedy, Gregory Peck plays a bankrupt American abroad, who is given the title bank note and told to keep it intact for a month. As the butt of a joke between two rich gamblers, Peck has problems at first, but then finds his "wealth" means he never has to spend a penny because his credit rating is so good. Set in Edwardian London, the picture has a lot of charm and gentle humour, owing to Peck's evident delight in the role and the unobtrusive direction of Ronald Neame. The witty script, based on the story by Mark Twain, was written by Jill Craigie, the film-maker wife of Michael Foot.

Writer/director M Night Shyamalan's once glorious reputation is tarnished further by this tediously juvenile fantasy adventure in which the Fire Nation and its vengeful Prince Zuko (Slumdog Millionaire's Dev Patel) want to rule Air, Water and Earth. But will young Avatar Aang (Noah Ringer) fulfil his destiny as controller of all four elements and return harmony to the universe? Based on a popular American animé series, this often incomprehensible, potted live-action update is so overloaded with CGI animation, the conversion almost feels redundant. A mix of hackneyed Tolkien fantasy, Brothers Grimm fairy tale and Old Testament cliché is evident in the heavily subplotted story, and the blanket banality is increased by Shyamalan's completely bland direction and wooden performances by his child stars. A few epic vistas and images are spectacular - notably the tsunami wall of water holding the Fire Nation's ships at bay - but most of the elemental "bending" is poorly conceived and unexciting, especially in the 3D repackaging.

Ian Fleming received a useful boost to his sales when President Kennedy listed From Russia with Love as one of his ten favourite books. It is also one of the most popular Bond movies and a terrific thriller in its own right, owing much to Alfred Hitchcock and Carol Reed's The Third Man in its marvellous atmosphere of foreign intrigue. Superbly shot on location in a pre-touristy Istanbul, and closely following Fleming's original story, the film has Sean Connery's spy duped into smuggling a top-secret communist decoding machine, plus blonde Russian diplomat Daniela Bianchi, from Turkey to the West via the Orient Express. Lotte Lenya is unforgettable as lesbian villain Rosa Klebb, and Robert Shaw is an impressive hitman who commits a terrible faux pas in front of 007 by ordering red wine with fish.

This futuristic thriller is set in a world where hi-tech artificial organs are all the rage, but come at a deadly price. Fall behind on your repayments and a crack squad of repo men - essentially bailiffs-cum-surgeons - hunt you down and take back the replacement parts on the spot. Two of the best are Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker), but when the former is given a new heart, he begins to question the morality of The Union, the sinister corporation that employs him, and goes on the run - with his former partner in hot pursuit. Director Miguel Sapochnik sets the action in an inner-city dystopia that allows him to take some broad swipes at a runaway consumer culture and offer heavy-handed satire on the nature of healthcare and scientific progress. But the chase sequences never have enough momentum, Law is a fairly unconvincing renegade hero and there's too much emphasis on blood-soaked violence at the expense of both plot and character development.

How you feel about a third helping of American Pie will of course depend on how the first two servings went down. For some, these adolescent sex comedies were the living proof of how popular cinema had plumbed new depths in taste. For others, who spotted the essential sweetness at the heart of the confection it was a worthy successor to the John Hughes teen-fests of the 1980s. In this supposedly ultimate slice, in which series regulars Jim (Jason Biggs) and Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) attempt to tie the knot, writer Adam Herz delivers the familiar recipe of bawdy set pieces that culminate in a shamelessly upbeat and sentimental ending. Nothing new then, and as revolting and foul-mouthed as ever, but this will be a reasonably satisfying final course for Pie fans everywhere.

Playing on our fears of "the other", director Robin Hardy's psychosexual horror, first released in 1973, has now attained classic status. Brilliantly scripted by Anthony Shaffer (Sleuth) and impressively staged on location, the film stars Edward Woodward as the devoutly Christian policeman, Sergeant Howie, who travels to a remote Hebridean island to investigate the disappearance of a young girl. As his efforts are ha mpered by the islanders' wall of silence, Howie's prudish disapproval of these neo-pagan worshippers turns to outrage - not least when he is "tempted" by the pub landlord's free-spirited daughter (Britt Ekland) and given an audience with the mysterious Lord Summerisle (Christopher Lee). The Wicker Man does have some stilted moments, but it still manages to pack a bizarre, disturbing punch. The shorter running time of this original theatrical version does impact on the narrative depth of the story. The 2001 director's cut (available on DVD) is much closer to Hardy's vision.

The novel from which this TV movie was taken is a classic example of a Danielle Steel potboiler. Once such "women's pictures" were a Hollywood staple, attracting stars of the calibre of Joan Crawford and Barbara Stanwyck. Eva LaRue may not be in their league, but she suffers nobly here as the Italian wife of an American army officer whos frozen out of the family by hellish mother-in-law Angie Dickinson. Directed with exemplary overstatement by Bethany Rooney, this is undemanding escapism of the tear-jerking kind.

Japan's favourite giant lizard crawls out of radioactive waters in the South Pacific and heads for New York in this dreary American overhaul from 10,000 BC director Roland Emmerich. Resembling an over-produced version of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Emmerich's blockbuster behemoth replaces man-in-suit special effects with dodgy computer visuals and sub-Jurassic Park thrills. What it doesn't replicate is the endearing charm the celebrated fire-breather had when he stomped through cardboard skyscrapers. The old Toho Studios' fantasy adventures may have lower budgets, but even the cheapest shows more imagination and flair than this dismal monster mishmash.
