Hostel: Part II- (2007)

Writer/director Eli Roth's deft sequel to his 2005 original has increased production values, better character development and a more mature style. Hostel featured male backpackers being tortured for sport, but the genders are switched here, as three young American girls are lured to Slovakia for a spa break. Instead, they find themselves auctioned off as victims to satisfy the sick and violent fantasies of the privileged. The blood flows copiously, but it's the moody evocation of sheer depravity through suggestion that provides most impact, as Roth creates a terrifying atmosphere where the plight of the victims is keenly felt. The hardcore theme of man's inhumanity to man is reinforced by the surprise narrative swerves and some well-judged gallows humour.

This tale of betrayal is told with great control by director Jack Nicolella and acted with restraint by Donna Mills. As the wife and mother who discovers that her presumed-dead husband actually deserted her and is still alive, Mills keeps a lid on emotions that could easily have boiled over and turned her search for justice into yet another hysterical revenge drama. However, with the emphasis so firmly on Mills's crusade, Jack Scalia's rogue spouse is rather one-dimensional, and Stephanie Liss's script, based on the novel by Richard Rashke, doesn't probe deeply enough into the controversial issues it raises.

02:15 - 03:50 - Thu 30/3/17 - Channel 4
6.3/10 Stars

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

Jim Carrey does his in-your-face and overbearing act again here, but this true story about a conman who's crazy in love isn't just another excuse for copious mugging. As Steven Russell, Carrey also cuts a tragic figure when he becomes overwhelmed by his feelings for a sensitive soul he meets in prison. Ewan McGregor is the heart of the film as Phillip Morris, and the pair's tempestuous romance, though subject to coarse humour, is also tenderly portrayed by writer/directors Glenn Ficarra and John Requa (Bad Santa). It can feel too madcap when McGregor isn't on screen, but Carrey's performance is also compelling and surprisingly poignant. The fact that Steven tries to break back into jail after being released ups the laughter content, though the shifts in tone towards the end are unsettling. Even so, the film remains outrageously funny without resorting to cheap gags.

Big John Wayne finally won peer group recognition, taking the best actor Oscar for his performance in this western as Reuben J "Rooster" Cogburn, a cantankerous, one-eyed, drunken old reprobate hired by Mattie Ross (the excellent Kim Darby) to avenge her father's death at the hands of thoroughly nasty Tom Chaney (Jeff Corey). This movie has acquired a reputation for being a rollicking fun western, but actually it is surprisingly violent for a Wayne film (a pit of rattlesnakes, Dennis Hopper's fingers being severed), and, with its finely hewn, semi-Biblical dialogue (by Marguerite Roberts from Charles Portis's marvellous novel), it's not - unlike Wayne's earlier westerns - really suitable for family viewing, despite its strong moral theme. Glen Campbell is ineffective as Texas Ranger La Boeuf - a role first offered to Elvis Presley, to whom Wayne wouldn't take second billing - but it doesn't really matter. It's still a beautifully photographed film of many memorable moments, not least of which is Cogburn's final shoot-out with the bad guys in a Colorado clearing.

It's hard to believe the co-creator of Yes, Minister was the optimum choice for this comedy about a Deep South gospel choir. Yet even if Jonathan Lynn is au fait with the milieu, he's rarely in control of the tone or pacing of this messy amalgam of African-American social attitudes and musical tastes. Cuba Gooding Jr clowns to excess as the cynical ad executive determined to galvanise the choristers at his aunt's church in order to inherit her fortune. But the diverse singing styles of Melba Moore, T-Bone and Beyoncé Knowles, and a feisty turn from LaTanya Richardson, provide some compensation.

6.3/10 Stars

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

This is not up to the standard of the previous two Sinbad adventures - it's too long and Patrick Wayne is a distinctly charisma-free hero. But there's still plenty of pleasure to be had from the special effects of Ray Harryhausen, who enhances this romantic exotica with his distinctive brand of visual thrills. Highlights include a chess-playing baboon, three axe-wielding ghouls, a sabre-toothed tiger and a one-horned troglodyte. These all help to pass the time agreeably between the frothy Arabian Nights nonsense standing in for the plot.

Based on the novel by Wang Du Lu and exhibiting cinematic influences ranging from John Ford and Akira Kurosawa to The Matrix, this handsome period action romance from director Ang Lee put the art back into martial arts. Those familiar with the works of King Hu and Tsui Hark will revel in the unhurried way he reworks the conventions of the genre to explore the perennial themes of love and loyalty, duty and sacrifice. But Lee also combines brilliant stunt work with special effects to create such memorable sequences as the rooftop pursuit and the treetop battle. Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh excel as the warriors seeking the stolen sword of Green Destiny, but the most electrifying performance is Zhang Ziyi's teenage thief.

Think Flashdance meets Cocktail and you'll have a good idea what this flashy Jerry Bruckheimer production is all about. Cute Violet (Piper Perabo) leaves her toll-booth-worker dad (John Goodman) and the safety of the New Jersey suburbs for the bright lights of New York City to pursue her dream of becoming a songwriter. Knocking on the doors of various record companies with tapes of her songs, Violet meets with a distinct lack of enthusiasm. In desperation, she lands a job at a notorious bar, Coyote Ugly, owned by Lil (Maria Bello). Violet soon overcomes her chronic stage fright, joining other scantily clad female bartenders who spray customers with soda water, swig back Jack Daniels and gyrate on the bar. A subplot involving the requisite hunky guy (Adam Garcia) completes the full house of stereotypes for this glossy, pop-music-filled piece of fluff. It may not win any critics' prizes, but it passes muster as a leave-your-brain-at-the-door, toe-tapping entertainment.

An important film for British comedy actor Peter Sellers, this would give him his first really international audience. Sophia Loren was already a Sellers fan and was happy to have him play the Indian doctor opposite her spoiled heiress, in this adaptation of the George Bernard Shaw play. Sellers brings a gentle charm to his character and avoids taking the easy route to laughter by racial caricature. Loren is stunning and excels at the light comedy. Romance blossomed on set between the two and perhaps helped to make plausible the unlikely on-screen romance between the mismatched couple.

Writer/director Courtney Solomon makes amends for his appalling 2000 debut Dungeons & Dragons with this efficient but predictable supernatural chiller. Based on the legend of the so-called Bell Witch of Tennessee, it sees a wealthy and respected family in early 19th-century America besieged by an aggressive poltergeist. For four years, the spook terrorised the household, singling out John Bell (Donald Sutherland) and his only daughter Betsy (Rachel Hurd-Wood) in increasingly vicious attacks. Every haunting movie from The Exorcist to The Entity is referenced in the disturbing events, to offer a carefully constructed patchwork of fear. However, while individual elements may seem familiar, they're no less effective and hit all the right scary notes thanks to taut direction and a ruthless exploitation of sound and visuals. The acting is also of unusually high quality, with understated performances from Sutherland and his screen wife Sissy Spacek adding depth to a simplistic yet genuinely creepy story.

This feel-good dance drama works a curious charismatic magic and catapulted the then-unknown Patrick Swayze to stardom. It was intended as a low-budget filler, a tale of sexual awakening at a Jewish holiday camp in 1963, but it became a much-loved blockbuster and kick-started major industry careers for its production team. The casting is perfect, with Swayze playing the sexy bad boy dancing coach and Jennifer Grey as the feisty middle-class teenager, and their relationship never strikes a false note. But what really makes the film unmissable is the fabulous dancing - despite being highly erotic, it's never tacky.

This trifle has hints of The African Queen, with Peter O'Toole as a manic Irish seaman who teams up with a Quaker missionary (O'Toole's then wife, Sian Phillips) and a French oil engineer (convincingly played by Philippe Noiret) to sink a German U-boat on the Orinoco delta. Shot in the jungles of Venezuela, the film's blend of whimsy and battle is skilfully handled by director Peter Yates, who was riding high at the time on the success of Bullitt.
