Samuel Fuller was one of American cinema's true mavericks who eventually found a comfortable base at 20th Century-Fox, turning out a series of lurid melodramas that later achieved cult status, including this stylishly photographed CinemaScope western. Barbara Stanwyck (slightly too old) plays a ruthless Arizona rancher who is a law unto herself, until marshal Barry Sullivan (who hasn't killed a soul in ten years) turns up. It's all good fun, and, in its fairly short running time, not a second is wasted.

But, just as she seems ready to say yes to former high-school hunk Bruce Thomas, she meets Patrick Muldoon, an attorney whose well-intentioned deception threatens to ruin Santa's carefully laid plans. Brightly played and breezily directed by Kevin Connor, this is a pleasant way to pass the time.

Danielle Steel's Mixed Blessings- (1995)

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

Three couples deal with pregnancy, adoption and infertility in this weepie based on the Danielle Steel romantic novel. The plot is predictable, but the TV-based cast gives its all, and there are some top-notch performances from ex-Happy Days star Scott Baio, St Elsewhere's Bruce Greenwood and Baywatch's Alexandra Paul. Meanwhile, director Bethany Rooney makes sure every moment is a three-hanky one, which is hardly surprising when you consider her previous output includes other Danielle Steel melodramas, Dr Quinn: Medicine Woman and Touched by an Angel.

The Fugitive- (1947)
11:35 - 13:05 - Fri 20/1/17 - ITV 4
6.2/10 Stars

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

This mesmerising adaptation of The Power and the Glory - Graham Greene's novel about a "whisky priest" - by director John Ford is seriously compromised by the censorship of the time. But, despite the fact that the central relationship is no longer a sexual one and Henry Fonda's priest is not an alcoholic, it remains resolutely convincing. Pedro Armendáriz is particularly fine as the mustachioed police lieutenant, and Dolores Del Rio smoulders as the woman, but the real star of this brooding opus is the magnificent outdoor photography from Gabriel Figueroa. At the time, Ford's non-westerns were regarded more highly than his westerns. This drama is a quasi-western, and all the better for being directed by such a master.

The Mark of Zorro- (1940)
14:30 - 16:25 - Fri 20/1/17 - Film 4
6.7/10 Stars

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

A wonderful definitive adaptation of the great romantic legend, based on the 1919 Johnston McCulley story, with matinée idol Tyrone Power as the swashbuckling Don Diego Vega, alias the masked avenger known as Zorro. Amazingly, Ty is the equal (well, almost) of predecessor Douglas Fairbanks Sr in this lavish black-and-white 20th Century-Fox spectacular. Basil Rathbone makes as superb a villain as he did playing Sir Guy of Gisbourne to Errol Flynn's Robin Hood two years earlier, and the swordfights are terrific. The only trouble is that on TV at the slightly faster speed you can tell that they're faked. For schoolboys of all ages (and their mums if they're Power fans).

Director Lee Tamahori's fluid style and the relentless pace effortlessly propel this 20th James Bond adventure's intense action around the globe. From North Korea and London to Cuba and a dazzling Icelandic snow palace, the locations are inspired, even if the familiar "quash the evil megalomaniac and unmask the traitor" plotline is more preposterous than ever (invisible car, anyone?). Pierce Brosnan is on fine form (though he's let down by some poor CGI) as a betrayed and vengeful 007, combining the secret agent's usual charm and throwaway wit with true toughness and a streak of venom. Such character-broadening traits ensure that the format never feels stale, while the introduction of Halle Berry as a genuinely equal, if underdeveloped, female sidekick is a coup. There are only two "cons" to the movie and both involve Madonna - firstly, the singer's grating theme song and, secondly, her dire cameo as a fencing instructor.

In this reasonably enjoyable visit to the glossy world of novelist Danielle Steel, Beverly Hills 90210's Jennie Garth is perfectly cast as the heroine. She plays a rising young star of the entertainment world who has put her personal tragedies behind her, but remains haunted by her first love, Craig Bierko. Director Michael Miller, who made the cult prisoner-on-the-run drama Jackson County Jail but now seems happier with Steel adaptations, revels in the melodramatic clichés, and the result is an undemanding slice of romantic tosh.
