With any remaining shred of political subtlety erased by the appallingly exploitative Death Wish II, director Michael Winner continues his freelance vigilante saga in ludicrously over-the-top mode. This time a pack of punks and gay Hell's Angels terrorises a Manhattan apartment block. Because the impotent police do nothing as usual except bust Paul Kersey (the ever-laconic Charles Bronson) by mistake, the rebel with neighbourly applause resumes his gun-toting/grenade-launching ways to dispense the kind of justice that this type of broadly etched ghetto scum understand. Ridiculous and revolting.

Statuesque Valerie Leon is possessed by the spirit of an ancient Egyptian queen in this cult Hammer horror based on Bram Stoker's The Jewel of Seven Stars. With hardly a bandage in sight, director Seth Holt tried to radically rethink the mummy genre, and largely succeeded in creating a fascinating fantasy with a uniquely menacing atmosphere dripping in delicious irony. Sadly, Holt died during shooting; Hammer boss Michael Carreras took over and the film is not as interesting as it should have been. The same story was the basis for The Awakening in 1980.

The iconic Japanese anime character makes his Hollywood debut in this sweet-natured and colourful futuristic adventure. Brilliant scientist Dr Tenma (voiced by Nicolas Cage) is devastated when his equally brilliant son Toby (Freddie Highmore) is accidentally killed during an experiment. Tenma builds a robotic replacement, but abandons him when he doesn't live up to expectations. Left to fend for himself, the robot becomes Astro Boy and discovers the true extent of his powers when an evil force threatens the world. The film presents some fairly adult themes in an understandable way, and it's also less cheesy and sentimental than a lot of animated fare. But it still packs in some exciting action sequences and impressive comic relief in the shape of the hapless Robot Liberation Front (whose leader is voiced by Little Britain's Matt Lucas).

Imagine a mix of Sky High and The Incredibles with all the fun, laughs and clever adventure taken out and you've got director Peter Hewitt's atrocious comic-book fiasco. Washed-up superhero Tim Allen is coerced into half-heartedly training Team Phoenix - four "gifted" youngsters - for battle. What the former Captain Zoom doesn't know is the villain about to re-visit Earth is his long-lost brother turned evil by experimental government gamma rays. All of this is mirthless to a mind-numbing degree with the focus on juvenile fart, snot and burp gags. The acting is also terrible - Allen goes through the motions, love interest Courteney Cox pratfalls for nonexistent giggles and wacky professor Chevy Chase is simply embarrassing. Even the poor special effects-driven action is lame - the best bit being Team Phoenix attempting to control a malfunctioning flying saucer. It ends, as most failed comedies do, with an out-take reel over the credits. And that's not funny either!

The title sums up the plot, really, although predictably the lovable losers eventually save the day as rival police academies battle for survival in an era of cutbacks in public spending. It's an improvement of sorts on the first sequel, but by this stage you were either a fan or holding the series up as a prime example of Hollywood puerility. Director Jerry Paris, a former character actor who first stepped behind the camera on television's The Dick Van Dyke Show, died shortly after the film's release in the States.

This pirate picture from Renny Harlin has all the ingredients to shiver the timbers and also boasts the best treasure map ever seen on screen, yet it has gone down in history as one of the biggest box-office disasters of recent times. Geena Davis and Matthew Modine swagger with suitable bravado, but their performances are sunk by the predictability of the action. The storm, the sea battle, the swordfights and the romance all work like clockwork, so there's little suspense to transform familiar spectacle into edge-of-the-seat excitement. It's polished entertainment, but with a little more imagination it could have been exhilarating.

Japan's favourite giant lizard crawls out of radioactive waters in the South Pacific and heads for New York in this dreary American overhaul from 10,000 BC director Roland Emmerich. Resembling an over-produced version of The Beast from 20,000 Fathoms, Emmerich's blockbuster behemoth replaces man-in-suit special effects with dodgy computer visuals and sub-Jurassic Park thrills. What it doesn't replicate is the endearing charm the celebrated fire-breather had when he stomped through cardboard skyscrapers. The old Toho Studios' fantasy adventures may have lower budgets, but even the cheapest shows more imagination and flair than this dismal monster mishmash.

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

Set in a world of dragons and sorcery, Eragon fails to conjure the magic of Christopher Paolini's bestselling book. Newcomer Ed Speleers stars (with some initial uncertainty) as the farm boy of the title who becomes a "dragon rider", threatening the tyrannical rule of King Galbatorix (a gnashing John Malkovich). Jeremy Irons employs a dry sense of humour as Eragon's mentor Brom, which helps to alleviate some of the tedium as the youngster struggles to decide what his true mission is. Rachel Weisz voices Saphira, the winged beast that carries Eragon into battle, although getting there proves to be a dizzying ride. First-time director Stefen Fangmeier provides occasional distraction from the dithering script with adrenaline-fuelled flying scenes. But sadly the CGI effects aren't good enough to make Saphira an emotionally engaging character, so the relationship between her and Eragon fails to spark.

This magnificent western is one of the highlights of American cinema, the first of three remarkable films director John Ford made about the US Cavalry. It's a satisfying, finely crafted work, not least because of Ford's ability to create a tangible sense of time and place in a displaced community against the majestic surroundings of his beloved Monument Valley. Ford regular Henry Fonda is particularly outstanding - after this, he retired from films for nearly a decade to concentrate on stage success - cast against type as martinet officer Owen Thursday. Thursday is an embittered man set on a tragic course and is clearly modelled on George Armstrong Custer. He breaks a peace deal with Apache leader Cochise, an agreement that was originally engineered by Kirby York, here played by John Wayne, giving one of his finest, most delicate performances. The life of the cavalry - its music, its women, its mythology - is all superbly realised by Ford, who, in one simple shot of a lone soldier reading his Bible, confirms his greatness.

Based around a character portrayed by the Mr Bean star in a series of Barclaycard adverts, it utilises a very British strain of schoolboy humour to send up another home-grown institution - the James Bond-style superspy. Atkinson plays the titular hero, an enthusiastic but bumbling intelligence agent appointed to track down those behind the theft of the crown jewels. In a performance comprised largely of facial tics, childish pratfalls and poo jokes, Atkinson manages to bring the simplistic screenplay to life - and even gets the girl (Natalie Imbruglia) in the process. Sliding Doors director Peter Howitt aims the movie directly at family audiences, forgoing subtlety for youngster-friendly sight gags, while the actors - particularly John Malkovich as a French megalomaniac - seem to relish the opportunity to lark around.

Adapted from the Ian Fleming stories Octopussy and The Property of a Lady, this was the 13th Bond movie and it's possibly the most frivolous in the series to date (it's certainly the most careless). The plot meanders all over the place, as Roger Moore follows glamorous smuggler Maud Adams and renegade Soviet general Steven Berkoff across India and Central Europe. All the usual gadgets are on view (although even they aren't up to Q's usual standard), but director John Glen (editor and second unit director on several earlier entries) never quite seems in control of either the breathless action or the overly glib dialogue.

Reese Witherspoon tries - and generally succeeds - to be a grown-up version of Alicia Silverstone's character from Clueless in this entertaining comedy. She plays Elle, a sorority queen who's dumped by her rich boyfriend (Matthew Davis) before he goes to Harvard Law School, as he thinks she's not smart enough to be his wife. The vivacious Valley Girl decides to follow him there to prove him wrong and get him back. It's all desperately silly (Elle gets into Harvard by sending a video of herself in a bikini lounging by a pool), but the sight of a pink-clad Elle tottering on stilettos through Harvard's revered halls is hilarious, and Witherspoon is perfect as the girl whose specialist subjects are Cosmopolitan and manicures. There's fine support, too, from Luke Wilson, Selma Blair (as Davis's bitchy new girlfriend) and Jennifer Coolidge.

There are two love stories here: one is between James Cameron and a ship; the other is between society girl Kate Winslet and third-class passenger Leonardo DiCaprio. Cameron's script wouldn't have sustained Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh for 80 minutes, but, somehow, he and his magical cast revive that old-style studio gloss for three riveting hours. Titanic is a sumptuous assault on the emotions, with a final hour that fully captures the horror and the freezing, paralysing fear of the moment. And there are single shots, such as an awesome albatross-like swoop past the steaming ship, when you sense Cameron hugging himself with the fun of it all. At a cost of over $200 million, it's one of the most expensive movies ever made; it grossed nearly two billion dollars at the box office - a record. Winning 11 Oscars, it also shares - with Ben-Hur and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - the record haul of Academy Awards.

This comic-book adaptation tries hard, but Fantastic Four fails on too many levels to compete with the likes of Spider-Man. The uninspired storyline sees the members of a space expedition - Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Julian McMahon - travel through a strange cosmic storm that gives them all different superpowers (stretchiness, brute strength, invisibility, flammable tendencies, the ability to manipulate electricity). As McMahon turns evil (not to mention camp) and the remaining foursome try to stop him, what should be colourful fun turns rather inert and lifeless. Evans and Chiklis lend some life to the team's adventures as rock-like "the Thing" and fire-boy "the Human Torch", and there is at least one decent sustained action scene. But The Incredibles did the whole family of superheroes thing with much more wit, grace and pizzazz.

This western is notable only for a performance of immense dignity from the great Burt Lancaster as a Mexican-American lawman bent on justice. An unlikely debut for Broadway theatre director Edwin Sherin, who fails to get the most out of the material and quite clearly has no cinema technique. Additionally, the film is crucially under-cast, with a far stronger screen presence than Jon Cypher required as Lancaster's adversary. Only Richard Jordan manages to register among the supports. Shot in Spain, this is a film from a period in Lancaster's career when he simply seemed glad to be working.

Gladiator director Ridley Scott once again finds inspiration in the past with this exciting mix of action, adventure and history lesson. Orlando Bloom stars as 12th-century French blacksmith Balian, who loses his family and is invited to the Holy Land by the Crusader father (Liam Neeson) previously unknown to him. The uneasy peace in Jerusalem between the Christians, under King Baldwin IV (Edward Norton), and the neighbouring Muslim forces of Saladin (a wonderful Ghassan Massoud) is threatened by fanatics, prompting Balian to defend the city against overwhelming odds. A story about western forces in the Middle East has obvious contemporary resonance, but Scott steps skilfully through the minefield, stressing the desirability of co-existence and tolerance and the dangers of fundamentalism. Bloom is rather unconvincing as a leader of men, but the siege is breathtaking, the characters colourful, and there's even some intelligent dialogue.
