Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

This date-rape drama adds nothing new to a powerful subject in which a balance between contention and decency is always difficult to achieve. Director Bethany Rooney sets up her freshman tale with every campus cliché she can find to ensure we're behind demure Candace Cameron Bure, even before she is assaulted at a seniors' party. And the devious, sensationalist resolution turns what purports to be a serious study of the aftershock of a terrifying ordeal into a below-average revenge movie.

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

Good intentions lead to little of consequence in this underwhelming comedy produced by and starring Vince Vaughn. As usual, the Wedding Crashers star adopts the slick salesman approach as Ronny Valentine, the business partner and best buddy of Nick (played by a typically soppy Kevin James). Winona Ryder is lumbered with playing the wedge that is driven between them - married to Nick but spied by Ronny canoodling with another man (Channing Tatum). So begins a gradual nervous breakdown as Ronny frets over the best course of action, while trying to convince his own long-time love (an impossibly tolerant Jennifer Connelly) that he is husband material. Sadly, much like The Break-Up (which Vaughn also produced), the story lacks credibility and insight, and the gags are often incongruous. Even with veteran director Ron Howard behind the camera, proceedings too often veer off in the wrong direction.

A perfect small-scale western. Randolph Scott plays the very ordinary cowpoke who stumbles into the hands of kidnappers, carefully biding his time to turn the tables and free their captive, the rich man's wife played by Maureen O'Sullivan. The outlaws are finely etched in Burt Kennedy's screenplay (from an Elmore Leonard story) as both ruthless and human, and skilfully portrayed by Henry Silva, Skip Homeier and, especially, Richard Boone as their leader, a lonely, intelligent figure who cannot escape his nature. It is superbly filmed, almost entirely outdoors, by director Budd Boetticher, and the vivid, desolate landscape greatly enhances the drama.

The third of four featurettes churned out by Francis Searle in 1962, this provides a sobering insight into how the rest of the British film industry was handling espionage thrillers while Terence Young was making Dr No. With his heyday as TV's William Tell already behind him, Conrad Phillips stars as a spy sent to investigate when the body of a defector is washed up on an Irish beach. The direction is as perfunctory as the script.

Zorro may wear a mask, but there's no disguising the fact that this is an absolutely splendid swashbuckler. Anthony Hopkins plays the original righter of wrongs, who hands over his rapier, and his mission, to the younger Antonio Banderas. Catherine Zeta-Jones, as the fiery heroine, proves she's a match for the men in the action sequences. Director Martin Campbell (following on from the success of blockbuster Bond movie GoldenEye) makes the most of the dramatic swordplay and paces the film perfectly to its explosive conclusion.

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

In this well-made re-enactment of one of the most significant conflicts of the war in the Pacific, John Wayne leads his marines to hell and back and they love him for it, every bloodsoaked, heroic foot of the way. It was made on the cheap, often shows its age and is particularly anti-Japanese in its sensibilities. But it's still eminently watchable - propaganda aside - and the Duke nabbed his first Oscar nomination to boot. Apparently, Kirk Douglas was in line for the role of Sergeant Stryker, but, according to the film's producer, Wayne wanted the role so badly "he could taste it." If you believe Wayne's son, though, the Duke worried about the script and only relented when war veterans lobbied him to play the part.

Director Sam Mendes here follows up his superlative Oscar winner American Beauty with another riveting, intelligent drama imbued with lyrical imagery. Based on a graphic novel set during the Depression era, it features Tom Hanks as a feared hitman working for Irish-American Mob boss Paul Newman, who regards him as a son. Professional and familial loyalties become blurred when Hanks's own family is targeted, forcing him to take to the road with his eldest son, as he embarks on a systematic course of revenge against his betrayers. Comparable to the Coen brothers' Miller's Crossing, this evocative gangster movie boasts superb photography, production design and score, which utterly transport the audience back to moody 1930s Chicago. Cast against type, Hanks - whose haunted eyes speak volumes - is a model of unruffled understatement, while an intimidating Newman radiates his usual strong presence. Jude Law's eccentric killer feels too much like a colourful movie creation, but is the only minor setback in a remarkable second feature from Mendes.

Delivering exactly what the title promises, and in highly amusing fashion, director Phil Claydon does for Hammer horror nostalgia what Shaun of the Dead did for zombies with this visually resplendent homage. The simple plot sees sex-crazed, drunken slacker James Corden and jilted loser Mathew Horne hiking through a creepy village cursed with Sapphic bloodsuckers. Also along for the ride are MyAnna Buring (The Descent, Doomsday) as a feisty Swedish student and Paul McGann as a foul-mouthed vicar. The humour is more deadpan than Corden and Horne's wickedly funny TV series Gavin & Stacey. But for all its obvious vulgarity, this is also a cleverly aware spoof of lurid 1970s Hammer glamour; an edgy girls, gags and gunk extravaganza that has all the hallmarks of a post-modern Carry On Screaming.

Bank robbers use the 2006 World Cup in Germany as a cover for their heist in this low-budget thriller that feels like a belated addition to the raft of mockney British gangster movies inspired by Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. First-time writer/director Paris Leonti depicts the heist itself with rigour, the ingenious use of an airport check-in desk supposedly giving the gang a watertight alibi. But the robbery itself is fraught with problems, as greed, incompetence and sheer bad luck take their toll on ringleaders Alex (Geoff Bell) and Norman (Justin Salinger). Despite marshalling his ensemble cast with military precision, Leonti's workmanlike direction isn't helped by his limitations as a writer. A lack of character development turns the robbers into Identikit antiheroes and even the intended comic relief offered by Shaun Williamson's inept copper fails to deliver much in the way of amusement. Ultimately, this is a by-the-numbers heist movie with a payoff that fails to add up.
