This routine fish-out-of-water thriller from director Walter Hill offered Arnold Schwarzenegger one of his more interesting action roles before he became a superstar. Playing a stony, monosyllabic Soviet cop poses no real acting problems for the big man, and in James Belushi he has an agreeably foul-mouthed foil, as the pair team up to hunt for an escaped Russian drug dealer. Hill stages a series of entertainingly violent and increasingly silly set pieces, and there's an eclectic support cast that includes Peter Boyle, Gina Gershon and Laurence Fishburne, when he was still calling himself Larry.

Other than the presence of action-movie stalwart Dolph Lundgren and a few flashes of his trademark slow-mo gunplay, this is a depressingly ordinary action movie from Face/Off director John Woo. The mishmash of a plot finds ex-bodyguard Lundgren coming out of retirement to protect a supermodel from a deranged failed actor, while overcoming a bizarre phobia of the colour white (tricky really, particularly when he gets caught up in a fight in a milk factory). Made as a pilot for a television series that never materialised and released direct to video, this is really only for die-hard Woo fans.

Ginger Rogers won her best actress Oscar for her performance in this artificial melodrama, which at least proved that she had a career outside her partnership with the great Fred Astaire. What Rogers was particularly good at was portraying the common, not to say vulgar, shop girl, and that, in Christopher Morley's once-fashionable novel, is what Kitty Foyle is: a shop girl who can't make up her mind which man to choose. Unfortunately, when this film was made, all the decent Hollywood leading men had gone off to war, making her choice exceedingly dull: doctor James Craig or playboy Dennis Morgan? Who cares? Still, there's interesting support from veteran Eduardo Ciannelli as a speakeasy owner and from Gladys Cooper as the playboy's snobby mum, but this is hard going today, even for devout Ginger fans.

Elf director Jon Favreau's action-packed adaptation of Chris Van Allsburg's children's book is great family entertainment. In this intergalactic Jumanji, brothers Jonah Bobo and Josh Hutcherson are taught life lessons when they play a dusty board game found in the cellar that thrusts them into outer space to face meteor showers, a defective robot and lizard-like aliens. The witty script generates laughs from the cryonic freezing of the boys' sister, but there are touching moments too, like the revelation of can-do astronaut Dax Shepard's true identity. Having the entire universe just outside their front door creates huge imaginative scope, while the terrific retro Dan Dare-style design matches the film's refreshing reliance on old-school special effects. Favreau brings a delightful sense of childlike wonder to this stellar comic-book fantasy adventure that offers fun - and scares - for all age groups.

Characters from Nickelodeon's popular TV series Rugrats get their own movie in this fun feature-length animated adventure. Whoopi Goldberg, Tim Curry and David Spade are among the celebrities lending their voices, as cute toddler Tommy Pickles persuades his pals to help him return his new-born brother, Dil, to the hospital so that he can have his parents all to himself again. Of course, their journey doesn't go as planned, and the youngsters end up in a scary forest where they come across a group of circus monkeys who kidnap Dil. Messages about bravery and friendship are well mixed in with the fun so as not to spoil the enjoyment for children, and there are plenty of laughs for adults, too, especially in the various movie homages, including superb spoofs of famous scenes from Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Fugitive. Indeed, Nickelodeon conducted "parent-focused research" to make sure the movie had enough "multi-generational appeal" to guarantee box-office success. The result is a treat for all the family.

The Who's My Generation musical tribute to mods and rockers in mid-1960s England is a near-perfect integration of cinematic story and rousing pop. It specifically focuses on the antics of parka-clad Phil Daniels, whose alienation is fuelled by pill-popping, scooter rave-ups and seaside battles in Brighton. Director Franc Roddam evokes the budding Swinging Sixties and the teenage sense of frustration and disillusionment with a lively precision. Sting makes his acting debut in a genuine musical milestone crackling with energy and great performances.

Imagine a mix of Sky High and The Incredibles with all the fun, laughs and clever adventure taken out and you've got director Peter Hewitt's atrocious comic-book fiasco. Washed-up superhero Tim Allen is coerced into half-heartedly training Team Phoenix - four "gifted" youngsters - for battle. What the former Captain Zoom doesn't know is the villain about to re-visit Earth is his long-lost brother turned evil by experimental government gamma rays. All of this is mirthless to a mind-numbing degree with the focus on juvenile fart, snot and burp gags. The acting is also terrible - Allen goes through the motions, love interest Courteney Cox pratfalls for nonexistent giggles and wacky professor Chevy Chase is simply embarrassing. Even the poor special effects-driven action is lame - the best bit being Team Phoenix attempting to control a malfunctioning flying saucer. It ends, as most failed comedies do, with an out-take reel over the credits. And that's not funny either!

While many of Hollywood's tales about heroism during the Second World War were tainted by smug patriotism and unwelcome sentiment, postwar British cinema tended to handle the events of the conflict with fidelity and dignity, thanks no doubt to its worthy documentary heritage. This inspiring tale of unassuming courage is one of the finest in a proud tradition. Lewis Gilbert masterfully makes the drama as compelling as the action sequences, and Kenneth More gives the performance of his career playing Douglas Bader, the cocky pilot who overcame the loss of his legs in a pre-war flying accident to become one of the RAF's most decorated heroes.

Director Danny DeVito revels in the black comedy of this typically dark Roald Dahl story, in which monstrous adults consider children as inconvenient accessories as they devote themselves to their own pleasures. DeVito - who also stars as Matilda's boorish dad - cleverly emphasises the point by shooting much of the film from a child's-eye view, making people and buildings alike look forbidding and cold. Miracle on 34th Street's Mara Wilson is excellent in the lead, while Embeth Davidtz prevents beloved teacher Miss Honey from being too sickly sweet. Stealing the acting honours, however, is Pam Ferris, who brings vicious headmistress Miss Trunchbull to terrifying life. The result is classic entertainment for children.

This Australian family comedy, based on Dick King-Smith's book The Sheep-Pig, came out of nowhere to enchant millions around the world, converting many small children to vegetarianism in the process. The "babe" of the title is an orphaned piglet adopted by a family of Border collies who learns how to handle sheep under the patient training of soft-hearted farmer James Cromwell. The mixture of live action and animatronics brings the animals magically to life (the film won an Oscar for visual effects) and their voices are adeptly handled by Christine Cavanaugh (of Rugrats fame), Hugo Weaving and Miriam Margolyes. It's a delight from start to finish that will captivate children and melt the heart of even the grumpiest adult.

It was dismissed by many critics as a noisy, scary and utterly worthless excuse for some ingenious computer effects, but as empty experiences go this fantasy adventure is absolutely exhilarating. Toddlers, as well as pre-teens, will be spellbound by the marauding wildlife that is unleashed when Kirsten Dunst and Bradley Pierce rescue Robin Williams from the sinister board game in which he's been trapped for 26 years. Any film where the action is determined by a roll of the dice is bound to be episodic, but this hardly detracts from the enjoyment as one spectacular set piece follows another. The result is wonderful, escapist family entertainment.

In this memorable calamity-at-sea epic from disaster-movie specialist Irwin Allen, an ocean liner turns turtle under a tidal wave and survivors fight their way to the ship's underside in an attempt to find an exit. The religious aspects of Paul Gallico's source novel get buried under a barrage of set pieces as director Ronald Neame cranks up the suspense and minister Gene Hackman leads a group of uptight passengers to what they hope will be their salvation. There are wonderfully poignant performances by Ernest Borgnine, Stella Stevens, Shelley Winters and Red Buttons, but it's always Hackman's movie - not even the remarkable effects can upstage him.

Airplane! was always going to be a hard act to follow and this time the scattergun approach to the script carries more misfires and duds than normal. Still, the two leads from the original (Robert Hays and Julie Hagerty) are back on board again and the endless silliness of it all should win people over in the end. This time the flimsy storyline revolves around the first commercial flight to the Moon, but most of the fun to be had is in watching veteran actors taking turns in sending up their screen personae. Newcomers include William Shatner, Sonny Bono, Chuck Connors and Raymond Burr, but it is Lloyd Bridges and Peter Graves who once again shine.

In this smart and taut thriller from Ben Affleck, bank robbers are alarmed to discover that the manager they briefly took hostage (Rebecca Hall), lives in their blue collar Boston neighbourhood and may be able to identify them, despite the masks they wore. Leader Doug (Affleck) seeks out the woman and romance blossoms, without her realising that the object of her affection was involved in the raid. This enrages Doug's second-in-command and best friend Jem (Jeremy Renner), and as Doug contemplates going straight and leaving town with his new love, the gang's employer (Pete Postlethwaite) demands they carry out one last daring job. In addition to directing with flair and confidence, Affleck plays the central conflicted character with admirable subtlety, and there's also fine work by Jon Hamm as an FBI agent and Chris Cooper as Doug's incarcerated father. But everyone is eclipsed by the intensity of Renner as short-fused Jem, driven by loyalty to both his friends and his working-class roots.
