This futuristic thriller is set in a world where hi-tech artificial organs are all the rage, but come at a deadly price. Fall behind on your repayments and a crack squad of repo men - essentially bailiffs-cum-surgeons - hunt you down and take back the replacement parts on the spot. Two of the best are Remy (Jude Law) and Jake (Forest Whitaker), but when the former is given a new heart, he begins to question the morality of The Union, the sinister corporation that employs him, and goes on the run - with his former partner in hot pursuit. Director Miguel Sapochnik sets the action in an inner-city dystopia that allows him to take some broad swipes at a runaway consumer culture and offer heavy-handed satire on the nature of healthcare and scientific progress. But the chase sequences never have enough momentum, Law is a fairly unconvincing renegade hero and there's too much emphasis on blood-soaked violence at the expense of both plot and character development.

This fifth Carry On is unique in the series in that it does not have a single storyline, but consists of a loose collection of sketches. The action centres around Sid James and his "Helping Hands" employment agency, which tackles the oddest of jobs. The assignments vary in comic value, but the ones in which Joan Sims gets hammered at a snooty wine tasting and Kenneth Williams baby-sits a frisky chimpanzee stand out. The inimitable Esma Cannon simpers and sniggers superbly as Sid's assistant, but regulars Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor have little to do, and the gobbledegooking of Stanley Unwin is an irritating intrusion.

After the successful but preposterous weepie Magnificent Obsession, director Douglas Sirk reteamed with stars Jane Wyman and Rock Hudson for this exquisite melodrama. Wealthy widow Cary Scott (Wyman) risks the disapproval of her curtain-twitching neighbours and her own grown-up children when she embarks on a May-December romance with free-spirited gardener Ron Kirby (Hudson). Both leads are wonderful, with Hudson in particular bringing charm and tenderness to his role. Sumptuous Technicolor photography and lavish sets and costumes mean the film looks beautiful, and Sirk cleverly juxtaposes this with the ugliness of the attitudes that lie just beneath the surface. He deftly critiques the moral values (and hypocrisy) of 1950s America while simultaneously crafting a genuinely touching romance, making this one to melt even the hardest of hearts.

Given that plot is never a key element of Jackie Chan's oeuvre, it's no surprise that only two elements really matter: the chemistry between the two inevitable buddies/partners and the quality of the action. Sadly, both are well below par in this Dublin-set farrago. Chan stars as cop Eddie Yang, whose search for evil crime lord Snakehead (Julian Sands) leads to the discovery of an ancient medallion and a kidnapped boy, who does little but sit unnaturally still and look inscrutable. Inexplicably semi-dubbed and looking like it was edited on a bacon slicer, this barely releasable mess couldn't possibly get any worse until Lee Evans deftly applies the tin lid with an excruciatingly irritating performance. Even Chan's undoubted screen charm can't rescue this inept mess.

Nick Hornby's answer to Bridget Jones gets the Brit flick treatment here from a surprising source, with American Pie directors Chris and Paul Weitz at the helm and Robert De Niro's Tribeca Productions as a backer. But, unlike the Americanised version of Hornby's High Fidelity, this movie remains on home turf. Hugh Grant is on excellent form as Will, 30-something singleton and the most shallow middle-class man in Christendom - or more specifically, north London - who intends to use single-parent support groups to pick up women. One of his would-be conquests introduces him to Marcus (Nicholas Hoult) - a troubled boy with a suicidal mother, played by Toni Collette - who forcibly "adopts" the unwilling Will. All goes surprisingly well until the confirmed bachelor falls for single mother Rachel Weisz, which puts a strain on their friendship. Genuinely funny and moving, this is both an endearing examination of masculinity and a challenge to male isolationism.

This martial arts fantasy produced by John Woo is based on a late 1990s cult comic book, and turns out to be a messy mix of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, The Matrix and Lost Horizon. The plot concerns an ancient life-prolonging Tibetan scroll that's protected by nameless monk Chow Yun-Fat (and, after an unlikely plot twist, his petty-pickpocket disciple Seann William Scott) and coveted by former Nazi officer Karl Roden. Combining daft fortune-cookie philosophy, overdone stunts and fluffed fight-choreography, music-video director Paul Hunter's cheesy fusion resembles a pilot episode for some badly acted mid-1970s clone of Kung Fu. Without even the slightest hint of knowing camp to save it, this comic-strip misadventure soon collapses.

This routine reworking of the 1960s Robert Culp/Bill Cosby TV espionage series has US secret agent Alex Scott (Owen Wilson) going undercover as the assistant to boxing champion Kelly Robinson (Eddie Murphy). Scott uses Robinson to get close to a billionaire industrialist (Malcolm McDowell), who is intent on selling an invisible plane to the highest bidder. The laid-back Wilson and the motormouthed Murphy have an engaging on-screen chemistry - the movie is at its best during their obviously improvised bouts of bickering - and there is some fun spy gadgetry on display. However, the likeable twosome are sold short by witless writing, predictable plotting and bog-standard action sequences that fail to spark this action comedy into any sort of life.

The title of James Gray's murky thriller was a motto used by the New York police in the 1980s. In this film's ambiguous moral world, though, it's uncertain who the night really belongs to. Bobby Green (Joaquin Phoenix) is the manager of a Brooklyn nightclub owned by a Russian family with criminal connections. His bosses are unaware that Bobby's father (Robert Duvall) and brother (Mark Wahlberg) are cops leading the operation against a drug dealer operating out of the club. But it's not long before Bobby is forced to abandon his neutral stance and become a reluctant informant - a decision that also rebounds on his girlfriend Amada (Eva Mendes). Phoenix in particular excels, teasing out the muted tragedy of a man who's forced to choose sides. While Gray's touch is sometimes clumsy, he pulls off at least one coup: a car chase in a rain storm, the action viewed between the swish of windscreen wiper blades. Like the director's earlier work, The Yards and Little Odessa, this ambitious thriller largely avoids the expected clichés and concentrates instead on the price of familial loyalties.

Steven Seagal gets more dialogue than in all his other movies put together in this lukewarm attempt to give him a lot more heart and soul. He plays a Brooklyn cop with the comedic name of Gino Felino, who comes up against old neighbourhood foe William Forsythe, resulting in much retaliatory violence. Frankly, Seagal is no actor and his career has been founded upon his ability to look cool in combat situations, rather than convey the sort of softly spoken sadness he's aiming for here. There are plenty of adequate action scenes, but stabs at characterisation are a big mistake under the circumstances.

This routine fish-out-of-water thriller from director Walter Hill offered Arnold Schwarzenegger one of his more interesting action roles before he became a superstar. Playing a stony, monosyllabic Soviet cop poses no real acting problems for the big man, and in James Belushi he has an agreeably foul-mouthed foil, as the pair team up to hunt for an escaped Russian drug dealer. Hill stages a series of entertainingly violent and increasingly silly set pieces, and there's an eclectic support cast that includes Peter Boyle, Gina Gershon and Laurence Fishburne, when he was still calling himself Larry.

Another drama based on a true story, this time with Knots Landing's Michele Lee as a harassed mother forced to testify in court after her son is charged with murdering his own brother. Rick Schroder - cute as a child star (when he was Ricky) but now seemingly typecast as a TV-movie loner - gives a solid and decidedly non-cute performance as the nasty one of the twosome, who goads his sibling (a believably desperate Corin Nemec) into retaliating. Rip Torn appears in a supporting role in what is a genuinely intriguing and well-handled tale.

Emma Stone displays star-making charisma in this teen comedy, playing Olive Penderghast, one of those girls who just fades into the background at high school. So when the fibs she tells about her (actually nonexistent) sexual exploits start doing the rounds, it's no surprise that Olive is flattered by the attention. But, of course, we know that those tall tales are only going to get her into deeper trouble, even if we understand the peer-pressure to seem cooler (or should that be hotter?) than she really is. What unfolds, however, is a deft, witty and sympathetic tale of adolescent confusions that bravely references both Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter and John Hughes teen pics of the 1980s - and gets away with it. There's also a stellar supporting cast that includes Stanley Tucci and Patricia Clarkson as Olive's groovy parents, and Malcolm McDowell and Lisa Kudrow as members of the school staff, and they all make the most of writer Bert V Royal's gold-standard dialogue. True, the plot almost overreaches itself, but it's still enormously funny and has surprising cross-generational appeal.
