Music is the food of love, and love feeds the muse itself, in this intimate drama starring Jeff Bridges. Like the approach of first-time writer/director Scott Cooper, Bridges's turn is modest, though jokingly brash in places - and the more compelling because of those contradictions. Playing craggy faded country singer Bad Blake, he quietly works his way into the affections of a journalist (a tough yet tender Maggie Gyllenhaal) and becomes caught between his need for her and a long-held booze addiction. His relationship with her young son is just as endearing, but the script (based on Thomas Cobb's novel) pulls punches when the child is exposed to his drunkenness. Colin Farrell is also miscast as Bad's big-name protégé Tommy Sweet, another little boy lost. Thankfully, Bridges is totally at ease singing the blues, so much so that it's easy to forget those creaks in the script, as he delivers an iconic, Oscar-winning performance that's guaranteed to pluck the heartstrings.

Like its other recent efforts, PM Entertainment appears to have spent a lot of time and money on this sci-fi action movie, but this time they fell far short. A listless Michael Madsen is Dallas Grayson, a naval officer endowed with a mysterious power that makes him a target for the government. There are superior special effects, and large-scale action sequences, but everything seems wrong, from the position of the camera to how the action moves on the screen. The closing credits list a number of assistant directors, suggesting that there were some problems during the production. Cult favorites R Lee Ermey and Robert Vaughn liven things up during their brief appearances.

Robin Hood- (2010)

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

Ridley Scott's retelling of the Robin Hood legend is located in time by an illuminated manuscript introduction and then quickly plunges into the heat of battle, as Richard the Lionheart (Danny Huston) carves his route back from Jerusalem through France. These opening scenes are swiftly and noisily dispatched, with individuals, even deadly archer Robin Longstride (Russell Crowe, reuniting with his Gladiator director), taking a while to emerge. Clarity is achieved once Longstride assumes the guise of Robin of Loxley in order to return to a starved and oppressed England. Scott presents a politically complex vision of the tale, with Mark Strong's royal adviser deliberately whipping up hatred in the North to smooth France's way as conquerors - this is when the film really comes alive. Crowe's romance with an occasionally northern Cate Blanchett as Marion is well handled but still a distraction, while the scenes of mead-quaffing and folk dancing serve little purpose. Scott's film has tremendous strengths - fine battle scenes, a strongly realised interpretation of events and a commanding lead performance - but the weak spots diminish the overall effect, leaving it a valiant try rather than an unqualified success.

Director Rob Schmidt pays tribute to 1970s exploitation cinema with this simplistic but extremely satisfying horror feature. Offering everything a high-quality shocker should, it's gruesome, gratuitous, totally terrifying and, above all, rollicking good fun. A blend of Deliverance, The Hills Have Eyes and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, it has mutant American hillbillies turning the woods of West Virginia into their personal (human) hunting ground. But the grisly extent of their "sport" only becomes clear when five campers and a stranded doctor (Ghost Ship's Desmond Harrington) fall prey to their cannibalistic urges. While Harrington and Eliza Dushku (Faith in TV's Buffy) deliver ballsy and believable heroics, it's producer Stan Winston's special effects that steal the show - horribly realistic, they send serious shivers down the spine. Add Schmidt's skilful use of shadow and sound to the equation and you've got a pretension-free chiller that - while derivative - really packs a punch.

This film should carry a message warning you not to look too deeply for rhyme or reason or you'll end up with a nasty headache. Just ignore the holes in the plot and concentrate instead on the rivalry that develops between hitmen Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas, especially when Stallone becomes enamoured of their target, hacker supreme Julianne Moore. Director Richard Donner lets Banderas get away with a lazy performance, but Stallone has rarely been so interesting.

Dead Man's Shoes- (2004)

Following his spaghetti western homage, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands, British writer/director Shane Meadows turns his hand to horror. A grimy, naturalistic subversion of the slasher genre, this morally ambiguous shocker marries the style of 28 Days Later ... with gallows humour of the blackest hue. In an uncomfortably matter-of-fact performance, co-writer Paddy Considine plays a tortured ex-army man who returns to the rural Midlands village of his youth to take revenge on a drugs gang who used and abused his younger, mentally disabled brother (Toby Kebbell). With many of the cast being non-actors and much of the dialogue improvised, there's a strong sense of realism that makes the violence portrayed so much more horrific. Initially, events are sweetened somewhat with acerbic wit and dark slapstick, but edgy laughs soon degenerate into grim brutality. It's an abrupt shift that unfortunately destroys the rising tension and turns a powerful, claustrophobic chiller into just another nasty exploitation flick.

It must have seemed like a good idea at the time: take Herman Melville's classic adventure Moby Dick and transform it into a story about dragons, with Ahab seeking vengeance on the winged beast that killed his family and left him scarred for life when he was just a young boy. It sounds full of promise, but the results are actually far from enticing. Lethal Weapon star Danny Glover, complete with milky blind eye and waxy make-up, doesn't put enough passion or menace into his role as the bitter Ahab, while Vinnie Jones sleepwalks through his performance as Ahab's chief harpoonist. In a predictable script, there's also a romantic subplot involving Ahab's adopted daughter Rachel (Sofia Pernas), who has to choose between loyalty to her father and her attraction to the dashing Ishmael (Corey Sevier). Canadian director Ryan Little fails to inject any excitement into all the derring-do, while the CGI dragons vary wildly in quality. Fans of How to Train Your Dragon will certainly be disappointed, much like everyone else.

Expanded from his own play by Robert Harling, this comedy drama provided juicy roles for some of Hollywood's leading ladies at a time when muscle-bound action heroes held sway at the box office. Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts interact so beautifully as they discuss men, the menopause, manicures and marriage in Dolly Parton's kitsch small-town beauty salon that it was something of a surprise that only Roberts scooped an Oscar nomination. But it's Shirley MacLaine as the town's outsider (complete with her headstrong mutt) who steals the show with a wonderful display of crankiness and compassion, and just a little flirtatiousness thrown in for good measure. Director Herbert Ross times every gag and tear to perfection, but he fails to find enough for the guys to do, which is a shame as Tom Skerritt, Sam Shepard and Dylan McDermott are all good enough actors to give strong performances without having to hold centre stage. This is a little too dependent on sassy one-liners and is awash with sentiment by the end, but is still wonderful entertainment.

Despite its unappealing title, this is an incredibly touching and sophisticated film about life after divorce that examines the tricky issue of bringing a new partner into the family set-up. As the girlfriend of divorcee Ed Harris, ambitious fashion photographer Julia Roberts is in unfamiliar territory and starts off on the wrong foot. Attempting to win over Harris's two children, she finds herself competing with their "perfect" mother, Susan Sarandon, and doing rather badly. However, when Sarandon falls seriously ill, the women must reappraise their priorities. Strong performances from actors who are not afraid to be unsympathetic and unpredictable narrative twists make this far from your average sentimental family drama. In what could have been a thankless role, Sarandon is the stand out as a woman who is dealing with the pain of being usurped as a wife and the fear of being usurped as a mother.

In this atmospheric tour de force, Hammer horror and the fabulous logic of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle prove the perfect match in what was the first Sherlock Holmes adventure after the Universal series featuring Basil Rathbone ended in 1946 with Dressed to Kill, and also the first in colour. Director Terence Fisher (who was behind the camera for Hammer's revival of classic Universal monsters such as Frankenstein, Dracula and the Mummy) weaves a darkly romantic gothic spell around the dreaded hound from hell that stalks the foggy moors on the lookout for members of the cursed Baskerville family. Peter Cushing gives one of his finest ever performances as the unflappable Baker Street sleuth, and he has fantastic support from André Morell and Christopher Lee, who's on top haunted form as Sir Henry.

This impeccable adaptation of Kazuo Ishiguro's Booker Prize-winning novel stars Anthony Hopkins as the emotionally repressed butler and Emma Thompson as the housekeeper he possibly loves. Framed in flashbacks, the story is an English twist on Jean Renoir's classic La Règle du Jeu, a broad view of a narrow class of aristocrats on the verge of self-destruction. Co-starring James Fox as a fascistic English lord and Christopher Reeve as an American diplomat (the past and present owners of Darlington Hall), it is as much a study in power and politics as it is Hopkins's blinkered view of the world from behind the gleaming silver salvers. The 1930s and 40s settings are immaculately staged, and, unlike James Ivory's earlier dramatisations of EM Forster, this picture has real backbone: Ivory's direction is alive to every nuance and chink of the sherry glasses.

A recent college graduate returns to the bosom of her slightly strange family in this unchallenging comedy drama. After her hopes of a career in publishing don't quite come to fruition, the likeably resilient Ryden (Alexis Bledel, of TV's Gilmore Girls) finds herself living back at home and working in her dad's luggage shop. Meanwhile, her longtime best buddy Adam (Zach Gilford) is undecided about heading to law school on the opposite side of the country. Could this be the end of a beautiful friendship? Quite possibly, if Ryden spends too much time with her hunky Brazilian neighbour (Rodrigo Santoro). If this seems like a 13-year-old girl's idea of adult life, it's because that's precisely the target audience. Michael Keaton is solidly endearing as Ryden's goofy dad, and the rest of her eccentric family is well played by the likes of Carol Burnett and Jane Lynch, so the film is never flat-out terrible - just thoroughly bland.

This largely successful return to the horror genre by Roman Polanski features sardonic wit, subtle suspense tricks and razor-sharp irony. Johnny Depp plays the rare books expert hired by billionaire Frank Langella to authenticate his copy of an ancient tome that was supposedly written in conjunction with the Devil. Based on Arturo Pérez-Reverte's bestseller El Club Dumas, this satisfying gothic chiller has moody atmosphere, a stunning score (from Wojciech Kilar) and sinister unease to spare as it leads the viewer up numerous garden paths to a disappointing hallucinatory climax.

Sandwiched between his eco-warrior outings On Deadly Ground and Fire Down Below, this action thriller has Steven Seagal going back to the no-brainer fare that made his name. It's a partial success, but ultimately lacks the slick thrills of his early films thanks to John Gray's unexceptional direction. Here, the murky government past of Seagal's new-age cop comes back to haunt him as he pursues a serial killer. Keenen Ivory Wayans provides a lively foil as his partner, but Brian Cox, as Seagal's former boss, only succeeds in butchering an American accent again.

Sex and drugs and rock 'n' roll (or, in Ray Charles's case, soul, gospel, blues and even a little bit of country) are the basic ingredients for a biopic of just about any popular singer from the last 50 years or so. Childhood poverty and tragedy are standard extras, and racial prejudice is not unfamiliar territory. Throw in blindness and you are in danger of producing an indigestible mixture of cliché and sentimentality. Taylor Hackford's movie avoids that trap, beginning with the 17-year-old Ray setting out in search of fame and fortune and ending with him established as one of America's most successful entertainers. Flashbacks fill in the gaps. Charles emerges as a hugely original talent (his recordings are used throughout the film) and a sympathetic human being, despite his heroin addiction and serial adultery. This is thanks to the assured script and direction, and to star Jamie Foxx - his Ray is not just an uncanny impersonation, but a great performance.
