Following on swiftly from the release of Behind Enemy Lines, here's another noisy, gung-ho modern war movie. However, the fact that this film is based on the disastrous 1993 "Battle of Mogadishu" in Somalia does not temper its flag-waving, pro-American militarism. The film's poster tagline "Leave no man behind" disguises what was a strategic American mess as chest-beating melodrama - in reality, 18 Americans were killed, as were hundreds of Somalis during a 15-hour firefight. That it should come from a British director is the surprise, though to his credit Ridley Scott has cast many non-Americans in prominent roles - an underused Ewan McGregor, an impressive Jason Isaacs, comic turn Ewen Bremner and charismatic Eric Bana. It's sensitive, cool-headed and intelligent for a Jerry Bruckheimer movie, but for all of Scott's incredible technical skill - you really do feel as if you are there - the battle scenes lack identifiable characters and there is scant insight into the Somalian conflict. In a post-11-September world, its call for "heroes" makes it little more than a recruitment film.

A wonderful definitive adaptation of the great romantic legend, based on the 1919 Johnston McCulley story, with matinée idol Tyrone Power as the swashbuckling Don Diego Vega, alias the masked avenger known as Zorro. Amazingly, Ty is the equal (well, almost) of predecessor Douglas Fairbanks Sr in this lavish black-and-white 20th Century-Fox spectacular. Basil Rathbone makes as superb a villain as he did playing Sir Guy of Gisbourne to Errol Flynn's Robin Hood two years earlier, and the swordfights are terrific. The only trouble is that on TV at the slightly faster speed you can tell that they're faked. For schoolboys of all ages (and their mums if they're Power fans).

For anyone who has ever wondered how so many supposedly brilliant minds brought the global economy to the brink of meltdown in 2007, David Sington's documentary is essential viewing. It focuses on four hard-working individuals who placed their trust in financiers, to illustrate the film's central thesis - that the dramatic increase in income and asset inequality was a significant cause of the economic crisis. Sington occasionally risks being wise after the event, but accessibly places the crisis in its context, adeptly mixing expert analysis and animated sequences to explain such basics as supply and demand, competition and growth, and the ideological importance of property ownership. What will infuriate those now paying for the expensive mistakes of key players such as Alan Greenspan - whose stewardship of the US Federal Reserve comes in for rigorous scrutiny - is the fact that so many warning signs were missed during the dot-com and sub-prime booms facilitated by free-market deregulation.

This is about as original as its title, which irresistibly recalls the Graham Greene-inspired thriller The Green Cockatoo. The budget was clearly tight, and the story of an American cop who solves a case and falls for a pretty English girl while on secondment to Scotland Yard is hardly riveting stuff. Dermot Walsh does his best with some lacklustre material, and John Le Mesurier turns up in a supporting slot, but there's little else here to recommend.

Helen Hayes plays Miss Marple in this mystery based on one of Agatha Christie's weaker whodunnits, in which the spinster sleuth investigates the death of an elderly major the morning after he revealed a sensational tale of greed and murder to her. Making the best of her miscasting, the 83-year-old Hayes still compares unfavourably with Margaret Rutherford and Joan Hickson, but the film benefits from not having the all-star cast that spoils the guessing game in so many other Christie adaptations. Don't be fooled by the "exotic" locations, this TV movie was shot on the cheap in California.

In this TV movie, Margaret Colin (Independence Day) powerfully portrays a wife and mother who finds her life shattered when she accidentally hits a child with her car. This fifth Carry On is unique in the series in that it does not have a single storyline, but consists of a loose collection of sketches. The action centres around Sid James and his "Helping Hands" employment agency, which tackles the oddest of jobs. The assignments vary in comic value, but the ones in which Joan Sims gets hammered at a snooty wine tasting and Kenneth Williams baby-sits a frisky chimpanzee stand out. The inimitable Esma Cannon simpers and sniggers superbly as Sid's assistant, but regulars Charles Hawtrey and Kenneth Connor have little to do, and the gobbledegooking of Stanley Unwin is an irritating intrusion.

This irresistible combination of dazzling effects and sly comedy propelled Michael J Fox to stardom and Robert Zemeckis to the front rank of Hollywood directors. And time has not robbed it of any of its vitality. Fox plays the young student who travels back in time to the 1950s and acts as matchmaker for his future parents, who are showing no sign of falling in love. It's beautifully played by the cast (honourable mentions to Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson and Crispin Glover), and makes the most of an ingenious script from Bob Gale and Zemeckis that finds time to poke fun at 50s icons and lifestyles between the bouts of time-travelling. Zemeckis's direction is equally adroit and he never lets the effects swamp the film.

In this workmanlike thriller from Vacancy director Nimrod Antal, security guards plot to rob their own reinforced vans and blame the theft of $42 million in cash on an outside gang. However, the supposedly perfect, non-violent and victimless crime unsurprisingly goes awry, and the bullets start flying as the crews turn on each other. Stomp the Yard's Columbus Short provides the film's moral compass, as the Iraq War veteran and new boy on the block who's struggling with mounting bills at home. He challenges the authority of gruff alpha males Matt Dillon and Laurence Fishburne, neither of whom is called upon to do much more than scowl and get handy with a gun. Antal's attempts to crank up the tension are telegraphed far too often and undermined by a flagrant disregard for logic, meaning this never delivers quite enough bang for your buck.

The iconic TV series was hardly great art, but at least it had a down-to-earth, easygoing charm that's absent in director Jay Chandrasekhar's lame-brained, big-screen retread. In between relentless car chases, smash-ups, explosions and smutty vulgarity, it's actually Burt Reynolds who carries what passes for the plot. He plays nefarious town commissioner Boss Hogg, who uses a celebrity auto race as a decoy for his plan to strip-mine Hazzard County and steal the farm where Uncle Jesse (Willie Nelson) and good ole boys Luke (Johnny Knoxville) and Bo (Seann William Scott) run their moonshine business. Meanwhile, in a thankless screen debut that does nobody any favours, Jessica Simpson pouts woodenly as their scantily clad cousin, Daisy. It may have high profile stars and a large budget, but this outdated hillbilly dud couldn't be more lowbrow and moronic.

Back at the helm of the video game-based franchise he inaugurated, director Paul WS Anderson puts the Zzzz in zombies with this fourth, mind-numbing instalment. If anyone remains interested, Afterlife picks up where the third entry, Extinction, left off, with Alice (Milla Jovovich) rescuing the few T-virus survivors left in a Los Angeles under siege from the living dead. Visually impressive, with lots of coolly clinical white futuristic designs, yet dramatically redundant between the glossy scenes of Xbox-influenced action, it annoyingly ends on a "to be continued..." scenario. If you ever wondered what The Matrix might look like in 3D, however, the answer can be found here with the by-now requisite slo-mo shoot-out. Also for those 3D viewers, Anderson heaves axes, artillery, shattered glass and The Thing-style dogs at the camera to wincing effect, but it still only adds up to a lame, by-the-numbers horror.

Elizabeth Hurley plays the Devil in disguise in this remake of the 1967 Dudley Moore/Peter Cook comedy. In a contemporary riff on the Faustian premise, Satan Hurley (straight off the catwalk in a plethora of red and black outfits) grants geeky office worker Brendan Fraser seven wishes in exchange for his soul. Fraser uses these to try to attain the object of his affections, Frances O'Connor, while Hurley uses them to subvert his desires. It's extremely funny in places (this is director Harold Ramis at his superficial best), providing instant gratification that you'll forget the minute the end credits have rolled.

Ghost director Jerry Zucker focuses on another doomed romance in this retelling of the spiciest of Arthurian myths. If Kevin Costner can play Robin Hood with an American accent, then what's to stop Richard Gere giving Lancelot a Philadelphia twang? Gere is suitably dashing as the most independent knight of the Round Table, while Julia Ormond is ravishing as the constantly imperilled Guinevere. Stealing every scene, however, is Sean Connery, who, as a legend in his own lifetime, has no difficulty conveying the regal bearing of the once and future king. It's very 1990s, yet curiously and unashamedly old-fashioned.
