James Stewart sings with Horace Heidt and his Orchestra on his uncle Charles Winninger's radio show, while falling for Mary Gordon's lovely daughter Paulette Goddard. That's all there is to the plot, really, and Stewart later publicly declared this the worst of his films. Viewed today, it has a quaint period charm, though songs like With a Knife, a Fork and a Spoon don't exactly light any fires. The title was also the name of a popular long-running radio show featuring bandleader Heidt, and this film was really made to capitalise on his appeal.

This minor and utterly unremarkable Audie Murphy western somewhat surprisingly bears the name of ace Dirty Harry director Don Siegel. Unfortunately, it's absolutely devoid of the personal style Siegel brought to such low-budget films as Invasion of the Body Snatchers and Riot in Cell Block 11. This feels long even at its short running time, and is clearly padded for length with an uncomfortable prologue. Of course, Murphy and Siegel fans won't want to miss it, and the supporting cast of Faith Domergue, Stephen McNally and a pre-stardom Lee Marvin also makes it watchable, but this is a very ordinary western.

You get two Jean-Claude Van Dammes for the price of one in this gleaming comic-strip action adventure from director Peter Hyams. The Muscles from Brussels encounters his younger self - and sports a silly hairdo - when he's sent back in time to catch a sinister senator (Ron Silver) who's trying to change the past for his own monetary ends. If you can follow the time-travel logic, which everyone seems to be making up as they go along, then this will make for dumb fun, with good old Jean-Claude causing as much futuristic Van Dammage as possible. However, most sci-fi fans will find it desperately outdated. Best exchange - Jean-Claude: "He read my mind." Jean-Claude's wife: "With your English, I'm not surprised.".

Cinema saves the world in writer/director Quentin Tarantino's disjointed history-bending homage to war movies. The multi-stranded plot includes Mélanie Laurent as a Jew avoiding Gestapo capture, Brad Pitt as a lieutenant commanding a dirty dozen of Nazi hunters and Diane Kruger as a German movie star/British double agent. All of which eventually roll into the main action: to blow up the Nazi High Command at the Paris premiere of one of Goebbels's propaganda films. Delivered as a series of witty dialogue-driven vignettes containing flashes of violent action, it's a long but entertainingly showy melodrama full of cineaste jokes, tricksy wordplay and references to film-makers GW Pabst, Leni Riefenstahl and Sergio Leone. Highlights include a resistance-bar rendezvous where English spy Michael Fassbender's Nazi-officer disguise is gradually penetrated, and Christoph Waltz's turn as a charmingly evil SS colonel. Meanwhile, on the superb soundtrack, recycled Ennio Morricone collides with the likes of David Bowie.

This modern western was one of John Wayne's first pictures at his home studio, Republic, after he'd become a hot box-office draw on loan-out for Stagecoach. It attempts to cash in on John Ford's The Grapes of Wrath by featuring the plight of Dust Bowl farmers as well as being a story about refugees from Nazi Germany settling in America. Wayne arranges for Charles Coburn's eminent Viennese surgeon and his daughter, played by Norwegian actress Sigrid Gurie, to move away from the doomed farming area and settle in Oregon. Preaching self-help and optimism, the film shows no sign of a left-wing viewpoint, though the director, Bernard Vorhaus, and one of the writers, Samuel Ornitz, were later blacklisted.

A routine programme filler from producer Leonard Goldstein, whose Panoramic production company had a deal with 20th Century-Fox that guaranteed cinema distribution. The canny Goldstein cleverly hijacked the colour climax of an earlier Fox western - 1944's Buffalo Bill - and used it virtually intact in this movie, inserting new close-ups of his principal players. The cast is headed by the ever interesting, and once hugely popular, Van Johnson. Director Rudolph Maté keeps the film moving, and the 1950s Technicolor, along with the appearance of Joanne Dru - who co-starred in Howard Hawks's Red River in 1948 - make it still worth watching today.

Overlooked on its release as a routine piece of stiff-upper-lip-manship, this film is, in fact, a fascinating epitaph for the British Empire and a slew of movies about Imperial derring-do. Set in an Africa well brushed by what Harold Macmillan called "the wind of change", it's the story of insurrection in a newly independent state and what the resident British army does about it: nothing except stew and simmer. Staunchly traditional, it's also subversive and satirical, with a stand-out performance by Richard Attenborough as the apoplectic RSM. Mia Farrow appears in her screen debut as a Swedish UN official.

William Holden won the best actor Oscar for his unsympathetic portrayal here of an imprisoned opportunist in a German PoW camp - an emotive subject just eight years after the end of the Second World War. Director Billy Wilder superbly balances elements of drama, satire and comedy, and captures the claustrophobia of camp life. There are also fine performances from inmates Robert Strauss and Harvey Lembeck, both of whom were veterans of the tale's original Broadway run. The surprise casting coup is director Otto Preminger, who's mesmerising as a nasty Nazi.

One of the highlights of Dustin Hoffman's illustrious career, this cross-dressing comedy drama avoids all the obvious pitfalls and manages to make some pertinent comments about the role of women within both showbiz and society. Hoffman's Dorothy Michaels is a wonderfully realised creation and testament to the actor's painstaking preparation for a part. Director Sydney Pollack judges the shifts of tone to perfection, but special mention should be made of his clever pastiche of daytime soaps. Nominated for ten Oscars, the film landed only one - a best supporting statuette for Jessica Lange, who pipped co-star Teri Garr for the award.

This comic-book adaptation tries hard, but Fantastic Four fails on too many levels to compete with the likes of Spider-Man. The uninspired storyline sees the members of a space expedition - Ioan Gruffudd, Michael Chiklis, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans, Julian McMahon - travel through a strange cosmic storm that gives them all different superpowers (stretchiness, brute strength, invisibility, flammable tendencies, the ability to manipulate electricity). As McMahon turns evil (not to mention camp) and the remaining foursome try to stop him, what should be colourful fun turns rather inert and lifeless. Evans and Chiklis lend some life to the team's adventures as rock-like "the Thing" and fire-boy "the Human Torch", and there is at least one decent sustained action scene. But The Incredibles did the whole family of superheroes thing with much more wit, grace and pizzazz.

Perry Mason meets The Exorcist in director Scott Derrickson's unusually intelligent genre piece. Both thoughtful and thought-provoking, this classy chiller - loosely based on the 1970s case of German teenager Anneliese Michel - stars Laura Linney as an ambitious, high-flying defence lawyer who takes on the case of a Catholic priest (Tom Wilkinson) charged with negligent homicide. Was Emily Rose (Jennifer Carpenter) demonically possessed when she died or was it just a psychotic-epileptic disorder as church-going prosecutor Campbell Scott claims? This believable spine-tingler is a compelling courtroom drama first, a gripping science fact versus religious faith debate second and an intensely effective horror movie last (the genuinely powerful exorcism is a transfixing frenzy of hand-held camerawork and old-school special effects). Expect to engage in heated debates about possession as a valid phenomenon in western society after seeing this serious and seriously creepy movie.

Privatised prisons make a killing forcing inmates into pay-per-view car races to the death in director Paul WS Anderson's bluntly violent take on the future for extreme sports and reality TV. Jason Statham consolidates his action-hero credentials as ex-Nascar champion Jensen Ames, who's framed for murder to become a pawn in the machinations of sadistic warden Hennessey (Joan Allen), until he sets his own escape agenda. Though very loosely based on the cult flick Death Race 2000, this is more like The Shawshank Redemption meets the video game Twisted Metal, as the political satire of the 1975 original is dulled here by a surfeit of epic crashes, spectacular explosions and bloody revenge. It's a frenetically edited stunt collection that is serviceably packaged by Anderson - despite some gaping plot holes. Statham does his charismatic moody loner turn, but it's Ian McShane who rises above the exploitation B-movie script with A-list production values, playing a genius mechanic who provides Statham with his weapons-customised vehicle.
