The Princess Bride- (1987)

Rob Reiner has always been careful to avoid typecasting as a director, so following the warm nostalgia of Stand by Me he opted for this curious but ultimately charming children's fable. The film opens with Peter Falk reading the story to The Wonder Years's Fred Savage, and this ironic distancing continues throughout the movie. Although the requisite monsters, giants and swordfights are present and correct for the children, Reiner also ensures there are plenty of quiet chuckles for adults, largely thanks to the eclectic cast, which includes Mandy Patinkin, Wallace Shawn, Billy Crystal, This Is Spinal Tap's Christopher Guest, Mel Smith and Peter Cook. An unexpected delight for all the family.

Hollywood's plundering of classic TV series has produced its fair share of turkeys, but this is a glorious exception. This is partly owing to director Barry Sonnenfeld's wise decision to stick with the black humour of Charles Addams's original and very popular New Yorker cartoons and, perhaps more importantly, some inspired casting - Anjelica Huston and Raul Julia are note perfect as loving Morticia and Gomez, while Christopher Lloyd was equally born to play Fester. However, these stars are almost surpassed by the astonishingly agile Thing and by Christina Ricci's splendid performance as the young Wednesday. The plot - a confidence trickster (Lloyd) poses as Fester to steal the Addams fortune - is a tad contrived, but Sonnenfeld makes a confident transition from cinematographer to director (he proved himself again with Get Shorty in 1995) and the result is a witty family comedy that has enough sly humour to keep adults chuckling throughout. The massive success of the film inspired the cast to return for a sequel.

Today's audiences may feel films such as Platoon and Apocalypse Now are the definitive war movies, but this classic Oscar-winning tale has lost none of its ability to shock and involve. As a study of the inhumanity of war, it retains all the impact of the novel by Erich Maria Remarque upon which it is so faithfully based. This epic saga about German schoolboys called up during the First World War marked the coming of age of the war movie, and of Carl Laemmle Jr's Universal Studios which produced it. It also demonstrated, as an early talkie, the flexibility of the new technique, with staggering trench sequences brilliantly filmed by director Lewis Milestone, who received his second Academy Award for his work. The performances are also exemplary, but it is primarily a film of great moments - the climactic sequence of the young conscript reaching out for a butterfly in the sun - that, once seen, are never forgotten.

Shot in sumptuous Technicolor, this respectful adaptation of Oscar Wilde's sparkling comedy of errors thankfully rarely breaks free of its theatrical origins. The steady direction of Anthony Asquith keeps Wilde's polished barbs and bons mots firmly to the fore and the film is an invaluable record of an expert cast at work. Michael Redgrave and Michael Denison are clipped and composed as the gentlemen of leisure, whose innocent deceptions imperil their romantic aspirations towards the coquettish Joan Greenwood and Dorothy Tutin. Upstaging them all is Dame Edith Evans as Lady Bracknell, whose quavering delivery of "A handbag" is one of British cinema's great moments.

One of Hollywood's quintessential productions, this musical adaptation of L Frank Baum's classic fable is probably the most beloved fantasy film of all time and the ultimate family picture. It has something for everyone: wonderfully strange lands, fun-scary moments, a dazzling assortment of fairy-tale characters, fabulous songs to take us all somewhere over the rainbow, a peerless Judy Garland performance, and meaningful messages in abundance. Continuously enthralling, this is one hardy perennial you can never tire of watching. Uncredited King Vidor directed some of the sequences.

Tea with Mussolini- (1998)

Franco Zeffirelli here turns the camera onto his own life as a young boy growing up in Mussolini's Italy of the 1930s. Following his mother's death, the young Luca is rescued from the prospect of life in an orphanage by an eccentric group of expatriate women dubbed "Scorpioni". We assume Luca is Zeffirelli himself, not that he's the central character of the film - he's more the eyes through which we see these corseted and costumed women, who are like refugees from a Merchant Ivory drama. Judi Dench, Joan Plowright, Maggie Smith, Lily Tomlin and Cher give boisterously strong performances as the gaggle who gather over tea to gossip, and who act as unofficial minders and teachers to Luca. As it continues, the movie becomes a more conventional wartime story, ultimately making the drama a series of anecdotes rather than a rich character piece.

The James Bond series started in great style with this cleverly conceived dose of sheer escapism that, unlike later episodes, remained true to the essence of Ian Fleming's super-spy novels. Director Terence Young set the 007 standard with terrific action sequences, highly exotic atmosphere and witty humour. There was also the sex, of course, and bikini-clad Ursula Andress couldn't have asked for a better star-making entrance. Looking back, it's easy to see why this caused so much excitement as it was entirely different from anything else. Sean Connery is just perfect as the dashing, debonair and ruthless secret agent with a licence to kill.

This feel-good dance drama works a curious charismatic magic and catapulted the then-unknown Patrick Swayze to stardom. It was intended as a low-budget filler, a tale of sexual awakening at a Jewish holiday camp in 1963, but it became a much-loved blockbuster and kick-started major industry careers for its production team. The casting is perfect, with Swayze playing the sexy bad boy dancing coach and Jennifer Grey as the feisty middle-class teenager, and their relationship never strikes a false note. There's plenty going on in returning director Jon Favreau's sequel to the smash-hit original, though it does feel like rather overfamiliar territory. Departing from the character's Marvel comic storylines, screenwriter Justin Theroux has Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr, good as ever) struggling with superhero fame, shattered relationships, governmental pressure and a debilitating form of blood poisoning. Meanwhile, Russian inventor Ivan Vanko (Mickey Rourke) creates his own deadly suit and weapons manufacturer Justin Hammer (Sam Rockwell) provides him with the resources to smash Stark's vision of privatised world peace. It may lack the fresh irreverence and excitement of the first adventure, but there are noteworthy set pieces. Vanko makes a dramatic appearance at the Monaco Grand Prix and the finale sees a spectacular face-off at Stark Expo, where a chromium-suited James Rhodes (Don Cheadle taking over from Terrence Howard) joins in the deluxe CGI mayhem.

Giving the ardent admirer everything they could wish for and the cynics much to ponder, this curiously bittersweet tribute to the late Michael Jackson is better and slicker than expected, especially considering its fast turnaround after his untimely death. Director, choreographer and friend Kenny Ortega (High School Musical) assembles a heartfelt celebration from over 100 hours of auditions, interviews and rehearsal footage taken from the "King of Pop's" preparations for his ill-fated London concert series. Nothing negative or scandalous is allowed to permeate this commemoration of one of pop culture's greatest entertainers. Instead the focus is on his creative genius, driven perfectionism (including some surprisingly waspish comments to his musical director) and catalogue of chart hits (Thriller, Beat It), and the fascinating way it was all being put together for his O2 Arena comeback.

Think Flashdance meets Cocktail and you'll have a good idea what this flashy Jerry Bruckheimer production is all about. Cute Violet (Piper Perabo) leaves her toll-booth-worker dad (John Goodman) and the safety of the New Jersey suburbs for the bright lights of New York City to pursue her dream of becoming a songwriter. Knocking on the doors of various record companies with tapes of her songs, Violet meets with a distinct lack of enthusiasm. In desperation, she lands a job at a notorious bar, Coyote Ugly, owned by Lil (Maria Bello). Violet soon overcomes her chronic stage fright, joining other scantily clad female bartenders who spray customers with soda water, swig back Jack Daniels and gyrate on the bar. A subplot involving the requisite hunky guy (Adam Garcia) completes the full house of stereotypes for this glossy, pop-music-filled piece of fluff. It may not win any critics' prizes, but it passes muster as a leave-your-brain-at-the-door, toe-tapping entertainment.

This unprepossessing sequel to the massive John Travolta/Olivia Newton-John hit is notable for a great title song by the Four Tops and a then little-known Michelle Pfeiffer in a clinging short skirt. This is the story of Rydell High School some years on from those halcyon days of drainpipe trousers and stiff petticoats. The problem is that director/choreographer Patricia Birch tries to bring those high steppin', arm-waving innocent production values to an altogether grittier era of emerging 1960s liberalism. It doesn't work, but you could spend the time spotting relatives of the stars - Liza Minnelli's step-sister, Lorna Luft, is the most "distinguished".

Music is the food of love, and love feeds the muse itself, in this intimate drama starring Jeff Bridges. Like the approach of first-time writer/director Scott Cooper, Bridges's turn is modest, though jokingly brash in places - and the more compelling because of those contradictions. Playing craggy faded country singer Bad Blake, he quietly works his way into the affections of a journalist (a tough yet tender Maggie Gyllenhaal) and becomes caught between his need for her and a long-held booze addiction. His relationship with her young son is just as endearing, but the script (based on Thomas Cobb's novel) pulls punches when the child is exposed to his drunkenness. Colin Farrell is also miscast as Bad's big-name protégé Tommy Sweet, another little boy lost. Thankfully, Bridges is totally at ease singing the blues, so much so that it's easy to forget those creaks in the script, as he delivers an iconic, Oscar-winning performance that's guaranteed to pluck the heartstrings.
