Following on from the box-office success of The Great Escape, this is a rattlingly exciting Second World War escape adventure, with a well-cast Frank Sinatra as Colonel Joseph L Ryan, a tough PoW who seizes a German train delivering Allied prisoners. Sinatra's character is unusually uncompromising, even for him, and the star delivers one of his best performances. Director Mark Robson uses his camera skilfully, and the support cast is exceptionally well chosen: co-star Trevor Howard is always excellent in confrontation roles, and a nod to The Great Escape finds John Leyton (who had a number one hit with Johnny Remember Me in 1961) as a British lieutenant. The eagle-eyed should note Hollywood restaurateur Michael Romanoff as an Italian noble. The film was a major commercial success in its day.

In a welcome return to the gritty glamour of such early outings as From Russia with Love, this 19th James Bond adventure effortlessly juggles a hard-hitting story with all the expected "super spy" embellishments and keeps everything in diamond-cut focus for maximum suspense and thrills. Plaudits should go to director Michael Apted for the stirring, not shaky, blend of casino, ski slopes and submarine components contained within a topical plot about the power struggle for global domination of pipelines from oil-rich Azerbaijan. Pierce Brosnan is clearly comfortable as 007, both in the dramatic sequences and during the spectacular stunts. (The opening speedboat chase along the River Thames gets things moving in turbo drive.) Matching him every step of the way are Sophie Marceau, the best Bond girl in ages, and Robert Carlyle, who is perfect as a vicious villain. Even Judi Dench's "M" gets out into the Middle East battlefield to show her gadget ingenuity. Though everything comes gift-wrapped in production glitz, there are many touching moments to temper the adrenaline-pumping action. Accompanied by a theme song from Garbage that sounds like Shirley Bassey revisited, the world's greatest secret agent entered the new millennium in fine blockbuster form.

This self-deprecating and winningly indulgent cosmic adventure from director/producer/star Clint Eastwood is a complete macho-fuelled fantasy set in the ultra-realistic world of Nasa operations today. With an irresistible premise - four elderly astronauts finally get the chance to go into orbit 40 years after being sidelined by a monkey - this slice of gung-ho wish-fulfilment is an entertaining feel-good pleasure. Eastwood's Team Daedalus is called back into service because no other has the obsolete knowledge to prevent a Cold-War era Russian telecommunications satellite from crashing to Earth. There's absolutely no point in taking anything seriously in this hi-tech Peter Pan fable. Even the space-set climax, brilliantly constructed by Star Wars supremo George Lucas's company (Industrial Light and Magic) from actual photographs, space shuttle footage, miniatures and digital animation, lacks any real thrills or suspense because the outcome is obvious from the start. But Eastwood and his co-stars shine as the ageing spacemen, wheezing through basic training, navigating past feuds and becoming all-American heroes. Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland and James Garner also reveal the right stuff as well as the true meaning of star charisma and career longevity.

Following his terror-on-the-Tube-tale, Creep, British director Christopher Smith here goes above ground and delivers a skilful blend of comedy and horror. Pitched somewhere between TV's The Office and British horror Dog Soldiers, this follows a group of armaments firm employees on a team-building weekend in rural Hungary. Lost in the woods, it's not long before a talented ensemble cast (headed by Danny Dyer as a permanently stoned slacker) is caught up in something much more deadly than paintball games. Smith effectively switches between crowd-pleasing comedy and genuine suspense as he stages a series of gory deaths. Some might argue this is merely a disposable B-movie, but others will be won over by its sheer insouciance. After all, how many other slasher movies feature surface-to-air missiles?

The Day after Tomorrow- (2004)

This jaw-dropping disaster movie makes director Roland Emmerich's previous outings feel like expensive dress rehearsals. For all their epic destruction, his previous features Independence Day and the lacklustre Godzilla are damp squibs compared to this astonishing, cautionary tale. Rooted loosely in scientific reality, the film piles on the Hollywood excess to deliver a US-centred thrill-ride in which global warming abruptly pushes the planet into a new ice age during one incredible worldwide superstorm. Though there's a human element, focusing on climatologist Dennis Quaid's cross-country journey to Manhattan to rescue his trapped son, Jake Gyllenhaal, it's the weather effects that take centre stage. Putting aside the anticlimactic conclusion, this is cinema as pure spectacle, as tornados, flash floods, hurricanes and snow demolish cities including LA and New York. Never mind that the dialogue is frequently laugh-out-loud cheesy and the performances are often melodramatic, what counts here is the enormous entertainment factor.

The team responsible for The 40 Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up is behind this sometimes riotous anti-romantic comedy. After musician Peter (Jason Segel) is dumped by his TV-star girlfriend Sarah (Kristen Bell), he decides to take a trip to Hawaii to get over her. But when Peter arrives, he discovers that Sarah and her new British rock star boyfriend (Russell Brand) are not only staying at the same resort, but in the very same hotel. All three leads are likeable and well cast, while the Hawaiian scenery looks great. But like producer Judd Apatow's previous films, it is somewhat overlong, with several scenes apparently included because they could be, not because they should be. As compensation, it is often laugh-out-loud funny, with Apatow's broad humour delivering belly laughs by the barrel-load.

Lock, Stock's Jason Statham plays second fiddle to a battery of special effects in this high-voltage action thriller. He stars as a cool criminal driver who's paid to transport cargo - human, or otherwise - with no questions asked. When he violates his code by looking in one of the "packages" and discovers a Chinese girl (Shu Qi), he's forced to go on the run from his employers and the police. Amid all the posturing macho extravagance (car chases, mega-explosive stunt work), there's also a bizarre oil wrestling sequence, and one extraordinary moment where Statham kisses his enemy underwater to steal his breath! Clearly, action is all that counts here and the plot (something about Chinese immigrants and the slave trade) seems the last thing on director Corey Yuen's mind.

You can add this title to the list of Stephen King movie adaptations that have failed to ignite the screen. A rabid St Bernard traps spirited Dee Wallace and her son (Danny Pintauro) in a Ford Pinto and terrorises them for days in director Lewis Teague's predictable shocker, which sports a half-baked script and an altered, upbeat ending. The car siege should be a harrowing ordeal, but Teague barks up the wrong tree by focusing earlier on Pintauro's fear of the dark and subsequent phobic attacks. The suspense becomes laughably static, despite all the visual trickery thrown in to generate an interest that manifestly fails to materialise.
