Time has not dimmed the shock value of this seminal classic from director Tobe Hooper that's based on the same real-life case that inspired Psycho. This scream-filled chiller, which was finally granted a certificate from the British Board of Film Classification for its 25th anniversary re-release, tells the story of five unfortunate Texas teenagers who come across a demented family of murderous cannibals. Hooper masterfully uses a documentary-style realism, coupled with the horror of anticipation and suggestion, to take the terror factor into stunning and disturbing areas. Low on gore (the three sequels aren't) and made on a micro-budget that adds to the harsh, gritty and creepy tone, this razor-sharp nightmare is a must-see for fans of the genre.

This sequel to Disney's smash hit The Love Bug is the second of four films featuring the Volkswagen Beetle with a mind of its own. Director Robert Stevenson and scriptwriter/producer Bill Walsh return to ensure the action remains fast, furious and very funny. The original cast may have departed, but in its place are such seasoned veterans as Keenan Wynn and Helen Hayes, who are tremendous value as the tycoon determined to build an enormous skyscraper and the dotty dear who won't leave the old homestead. The effects are somewhat dated, but the film is still in perfect working order.

This fast-paced animated adventure will delight kids of all ages, while also appealing to grown-ups - and superhero comic-book fans. Blue bulbous-headed extraterrestrial villain Megamind (voiced by Will Ferrell) finally defeats his longtime nemesis Metro Man (Brad Pitt), but grows tired of having no one to fight and creates a new adversary, Tighten (Jonah Hill). But when Tighten crosses over to the dark side, Megamind has to come to the rescue of Metro City - especially its spunky TV reporter Roxanne Ritchi (Tina Fey). Director Tom McGrath packs in countless sight gags and whip-smart one-liners, poking specific fun at the Christopher Reeve Superman movies along the way (watch out for Ferrell's hilarious Marlon Brando impression). It's terrific fun from start to finish, even if it doesn't quite match the good-versus-evil japes of The Incredibles or Despicable Me.

Twelve years after snarling his way through a New York education as a student in The Blackboard Jungle, Sidney Poitier graduated to the chalkface here. He plays a teacher in London's East End who tries to motivate his surly pupils to become responsible citizens. Director James Clavell's adaptation of ER Braithwaite's novel is a soft-centred affair and is probably best remembered for Lulu singing the title song, though Judy Geeson gives a credible performance as a lovelorn pupil. It may be on the naive side, but it still became one of the year's top box-office hits.

Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs- (2009)

Full Profile vCal (.vcs) vCal (.ics)

In this entertaining third episode in the animated prehistoric comedy series, the computer-imaging techniques of Blue Sky Studios - once the underdog behind Pixar and DreamWorks - attain new subtleties of texture, scale and depth. Unfortunately, the story is a little thin, taking a cheeky historical liberty by creating a tropical lost world under the ice, where preserved dinosaurs lie in wait to snare young viewers. Ray Romano and Denis Leary are back as the voices of mammoth Manny and sabre-toothed tiger Diego, this time attempting to rescue Sid the sloth (John Leguizamo) after he gets in trouble adopting three dinosaur eggs. This narrative decision feels commercially driven, and the jeopardy milked from it lacks continuity with the other, glacially inclined films. Thankfully, spectacle, including a terrific computer-game-mimicking pterodactyl chase and more high-wire larks from Scrat the sabre-toothed squirrel, is never far away. Buck, the Johnny Depp-modelled pirate weasel (voiced by Simon Pegg), brings welcome comic energy, but some may think the franchise is starting to wear thin.

Bill and Ted introduced the concept of dudes to an unwitting audience, but it was this spin-off from the TV show Saturday Night Live that brought in the megabucks and took "teen speak" to a new level. Mike Myers and Dana Carvey play Wayne and Garth, whose low-budget public access cable show is transformed into a national TV phenomenon by sleazy producer Rob Lowe. Along the way, Myers falls in love with rock chick Tia Carrere and, along with Carvey, gets to meet their idol Alice Cooper. Aiming for the unashamedly moronic, director Penelope Spheeris nevertheless manages to sneak in some sly satirical jibes and it benefits from inspired casting: Myers and Carvey are excellent, Lowe and Lara Flynn Boyle, as Myers's mad ex-girlfriend, are both nicely cast against type, and there is a neat cameo from Terminator 2 villain Robert Patrick. The music's mainly metal, but the wonderful Queen tribute means you will never - if you ever did - be able to take Bohemian Rhapsody seriously again.

More than a few eyebrows shot skywards at the news that Ang Lee was to direct this science-fiction action drama, the big-screen treatment of yet another Marvel Comics character following on from the box-office success of X-Men, Spider-Man and Daredevil. After all, the director of The Ice Storm was hardly the obvious choice for a genre more noted for campy fun and destructive action than the subtleties of human relationships. What has emerged is a curate's egg of a movie that is unlikely to totally satisfy anyone. The childhood trauma that feeds Bruce Banner's rage is an oddly grim subplot for what began life as a summer blockbuster, while the later action scenes feel tacked on despite their technical virtuosity. Matters aren't helped by Eric Bana's detached performance as Bruce Banner, but Nick Nolte injects a soupçon of fun as the older incarnation of his insane dad and Lee's use of editing - including split screens to suggest comic-strip frames - is quite innovative. Overall this is worth a look, if only to experience a rare but laudable example of big-budget Hollywood taking a risk.

Sandwiched between his eco-warrior outings On Deadly Ground and Fire Down Below, this action thriller has Steven Seagal going back to the no-brainer fare that made his name. Here, the murky government past of Seagal's new-age cop comes back to haunt him as he pursues a serial killer. Keenen Ivory Wayans provides a lively foil as his partner, but Brian Cox, as Seagal's former boss, only succeeds in butchering an American accent again.

Fresh from Saturday Night Fever, John Travolta was the biggest movie star in the world when he teamed up with Olivia Newton-John to help turn the Broadway hit into one of Hollywood's most successful musicals. This film sets itself the peculiar task of trying to evoke nostalgia for a time before most of its audience would have been born - 1950s America - where Rydell High School is the setting for a rather slender tale of teenage love and pre-Vietnam War innocence. Stranger still, it succeeds in the task, thanks to some toe-tapping numbers, sprightly hoofing and slick performances, not least by Stockard Channing as the most unruly teenager in town.

Jane Austen became one of England's most famous authors by writing about the social conventions and constraints of the 19th century, and especially affairs of the heart. And yet she never married, which is the starting point for this fictionalised romantic drama. After 20-year-old Jane (Anne Hathaway) meets young Irishman Tom Lefroy (James McAvoy), their initial dislike evolves into a mutual attraction. However, this rather familiar scenario is taken in a more serious direction by various plot twists and the emergence of a rival suitor. American actress Hathaway is convincing as the rural clergyman's daughter with literary ambitions, without ever seeming unduly mannered, while McAvoy is similarly impressive as the wild Irish lawyer who ruffles genteel country feathers. And Maggie Smith, Julie Walters and Ian Richardson (in his final screen role) get ample opportunity to strut their acting stuff as various pompous old relatives and neighbours.

Expanded from his own play by Robert Harling, this comedy drama provided juicy roles for some of Hollywood's leading ladies at a time when muscle-bound action heroes held sway at the box office. Sally Field, Daryl Hannah, Olympia Dukakis and Julia Roberts interact so beautifully as they discuss men, the menopause, manicures and marriage in Dolly Parton's kitsch small-town beauty salon that it was something of a surprise that only Roberts scooped an Oscar nomination. But it's Shirley MacLaine as the town's outsider (complete with her headstrong mutt) who steals the show with a wonderful display of crankiness and compassion, and just a little flirtatiousness thrown in for good measure. Director Herbert Ross times every gag and tear to perfection, but he fails to find enough for the guys to do, which is a shame as Tom Skerritt, Sam Shepard and Dylan McDermott are all good enough actors to give strong performances without having to hold centre stage. This is a little too dependent on sassy one-liners and is awash with sentiment by the end, but is still wonderful entertainment.

Winner of the Oscar for best special visual effects, this astute blend of science fact and fiction eerily anticipated the kind of lost-in-space crisis that would actually occur during the Apollo 13 mission just one year later. Gene Hackman, Richard Crenna and James Franciscus successfully combine public confidence with private misgivings as the stranded crew, while Gregory Peck heads the Nasa operation with typical reserve. Director John Sturges makes the most of his space hardware but never gets the domestic drama off the ground, with Lee Grant and the other wives being reduced to mere cardboard cut-outs.

This Australian family comedy, based on Dick King-Smith's book The Sheep-Pig, came out of nowhere to enchant millions around the world, converting many small children to vegetarianism in the process. The "babe" of the title is an orphaned piglet adopted by a family of Border collies who learns how to handle sheep under the patient training of soft-hearted farmer James Cromwell. The mixture of live action and animatronics brings the animals magically to life (the film won an Oscar for visual effects) and their voices are adeptly handled by Christine Cavanaugh (of Rugrats fame), Hugo Weaving and Miriam Margolyes. It's a delight from start to finish that will captivate children and melt the heart of even the grumpiest adult.

Co-directors Chris Wedge and Carlos Saldanha swap Pleistocene-era laughs for futuristic fun in their enjoyable follow-up to Ice Age. This visually inventive romp through a world populated entirely by robots uses inspired computer animation to revitalise a familiar story. Leading an eclectic voice cast, Ewan McGregor gives boyish charm to idealistic small-town robot Rodney Copperbottom, who journeys to the big city to make his fortune as an inventor, only to find things are not as easy as he'd hoped. In a crisply created environment that bursts with colour and visual texture, the sci-fi style of the 1950s rubs shoulders with more contemporary designs and landscapes, giving the movie a very attractive sheen. There are a number of ingenious set pieces, too, while the comedy is both light and mischievous. Robin Williams is especially funny and buoyant as Copperbottom's dilapidated street pal Fender, though some of the movie's in-jokes and references will be too obscure for younger viewers.

This irreverent medieval caper sets out its stall right at the start, when Queen's anthem-like We Will Rock You thuds on to the soundtrack at a joust. So far, so anachronistic. But the real twist is that the 14th-century spectators join in and clap in time. It's that kind of film, full of such cheeky flourishes - jousting fans sing rock songs, emcees talk up contestants like it's WWF wrestling, and dancers at a royal banquet groove to David Bowie's Golden Years. Writer/director Brian Helgeland - whose directorial debut, Payback with Mel Gibson, was reportedly taken from him and re-shot - certainly enjoys himself here, and so does his cast. Heath Ledger plays the commoner who dreams of being a knight, and so impersonates one with the help of sidekicks Mark Addy (his best role since The Full Monty), Alan Tudyk and Paul Bettany (who casually steals the film with his portrayal of writer Geoffrey Chaucer). It's tremendous, infectious fun, with a rocking soundtrack, and everyone concerned enters into the spirit of it (including Rufus Sewell as the evil Count Adhemar). If there's a downside, it's Helgeland's occasionally inexperienced handling of the action scenes, and the fact that, frankly, if you've seen one jousting match, you've seen 'em all.

In this New Zealand-set period adventure that unfolds like a Kiwi western, an embittered Boer War veteran tracks down a Maori seaman wanted for murdering a British soldier. Kereama (Temuera Morrison, of Once Were Warriors fame) is innocent of the crime, however, and fears rough justice at the hands of the colonial administration, while pursuer Arjan van Diemen (Ray Winstone, doing pretty well in the accent stakes) is taking the job primarily for the reward, after losing his family and farm during the Boer War. It's pretty obvious that hunter and hunted will eventually realise they have much in common, but this efficient chase story does well to deliver sundry twists and turns along the way, with Morrison and Winstone more than equal to the physicality and wry humour their roles demand. If the characters' attitudes sometimes seem slightly too modern, the writing is admirably respectful of complex motivations and faiths of all shades, while the magnificent New Zealand landscapes provide a spectacular backdrop. Ultimately, the drama's more satisfying than exciting, but it's a solid entertainment nonetheless.

This slick vision of the future comes pretty close to being Sylvester Stallone's best ever picture. Wisely keeping his tongue stuck firmly in his cheek, Stallone plays a tough cop whose unconventional methods land him in a cryogenic prison. Decades later, he is defrosted to hunt down an old sparring partner, the spectacularly psychopathic Wesley Snipes (complete with blond thatch), who has escaped from his deep frozen state and is creating havoc in the now crime-free Los Angeles (renamed San Angeles). The writers have a lot of fun sending up modern-day political correctness in this caring vision of the future - violence, red meat and sex are among the items on the banned list - and director Marco Brambilla delivers the goods when it comes to the all-important action set pieces. Of the supporting cast, Sandra Bullock has an early run at a role she would later perfect in Speed, Denis Leary gets to deliver one of his thinly disguised stand-up routines, while Nigel Hawthorne plays the doctor overseeing this 21st-century Utopia.

With any remaining shred of political subtlety erased by the appallingly exploitative Death Wish II, director Michael Winner continues his freelance vigilante saga in ludicrously over-the-top mode. This time a pack of punks and gay Hell's Angels terrorises a Manhattan apartment block. Because the impotent police do nothing as usual except bust Paul Kersey (the ever-laconic Charles Bronson) by mistake, the rebel with neighbourly applause resumes his gun-toting/grenade-launching ways to dispense the kind of justice that this type of broadly etched ghetto scum understand. Ridiculous and revolting.

Statuesque Valerie Leon is possessed by the spirit of an ancient Egyptian queen in this cult Hammer horror based on Bram Stoker's The Jewel of Seven Stars. With hardly a bandage in sight, director Seth Holt tried to radically rethink the mummy genre, and largely succeeded in creating a fascinating fantasy with a uniquely menacing atmosphere dripping in delicious irony. Sadly, Holt died during shooting; Hammer boss Michael Carreras took over and the film is not as interesting as it should have been. The same story was the basis for The Awakening in 1980.
